After leaving the infirmary, Nico comes back to the dorms to a rather worried Caius.
This was the second time Nico had stayed out all night without notice. Granted, the boy was allowed to do as he pleased but, after the first time, he'd at least informed Caius when he wouldn't be around. Upon waking and seeing the neighboring bed empty and undisturbed, Caius thought it might be time to worry. He rose and set about getting dressed for the day, all the while planning who he would question about Nico's whereabouts. They were roommates. They were friends. It was only right for Caius to show concern and look for him.
By the time he was ready he had formulated a plan and was resolved to put it into action. He would start with Illyana. She seemed to be the source of most of the trouble when Nico was involved so it would be logical to start there. Satisfied with his decision, he went to the door, threw it open and almost walked right into his roommate. He jumped back, the first words tumbling out automatically in his surprise.
"Where have you been?"
"Uh, infirmary," was Nico's bumbling response, surprised to be confronted with his roommate so suddenly. After Yana went back to her own bed and the medical people gave him the all clear physically, he checked himself out with the promise of resting in his own room. Because fuck that shit.
"The infirmary? What happened?" Caius asked, stepping aside to let his roommate enter.
"Oh, um...field trip gone wrong. Religious nuts aren't so hot on mutants," Nico responded, avoiding eye contact and shrugging as he walked to his bed.
"What sort of field trip has you running into religious nuts?" asked Caius. He closed the door and followed Nico, looking at his roommate expectantly.
"The kind where me and Yana went to Nevada to raise some dead people," Nico admitted, flopping down on his covers. Gods this bed felt good. He wasn't leaving again for AT LEAST a year.
Caius frowned. Every time Nico ventured out with Illyana things did not end well. He liked the girl less and less every day. "Are you okay?" he asked. It was the thing people asked in situations like these.
"Mostly. Faiza fixed me up pretty good," Nico told him, his voice only slightly muffled by the covers.
Well that was good at least. "I'm guessing this was Ilyana's idea?" he asked.
"It was both of our ideas," Nico defended, pushing himself up a bit to look at Caius. "We wanted to hang out." Just then, Kosti decided to make herself known, apparently deciding her master needed her. To be honest, Nico was surprised she was still up and about--he was like almost dead, he figured he'd be all out of juice.
"Have you noticed that when you two hang out, you usually come home in need of the infirmary?"
"Yeah but that's not her fault...that's cuz of other people," Nico explained, absent minded-ly stroking Kosti's spine.
"Perhaps you should find new places to hang out." Or someone new to hang out with.
"That was the plan today and...well, that didn't go too good."
"'Too well'," Caius corrected. "And that is abundantly clear." He sighed. "I take it this isn't going to discourage you from trying again?"
"I mean, I doubt we'll be going there again soon, but...I need to practice," Nico told him, and it felt like he was explaining himself for the millionth time.
"I understand." Caius was an avid practioner of his own powers. "Be careful, OK? I would rather not find myself suddenly in need of another roommate."
"Not sick of me yet?" Nico tried joking self-deprecating-ly.
"I'm really in it for Kosti," Caius teased. "Did you get to raise anything before you were interrupted?"
"Oh yeah, a whole ton of guys. They helped me fight," Nico told him, although that hadn't worked out too good. Too well. Whatever.
English was a hard language when you were tired.
"Well I'm glad you returned home safely, if a little worse for wear," Caius said.
"Thanks Caius," Nico told him, faceplanting back into his bed.
