After deciding to play hooky, Steve melts into a ball of stress at a bad time, and Tony is reassuring. There is also kissing.
On Sunday, he'd had to basically tear himself away. He wanted to stay there, with Tony, in the most comfortable bed he'd ever touched, skip the days between then and Thanksgiving break, burn through the mental health days he'd saved up.
He wanted to, but he couldn't. He had students to tutor, assignments to complete. Seven cumulative hours of training to get through. Life went on, and you didn't always get what you want. He had responsibilities.
Except now it was Tuesday, and after his last class for the day, he realized he was really sick of being responsible.
"Don't tell him I'm coming in, unless he's in the middle of something that can't be interrupted," he said to JARVIS as he entered the brownstone, skipping his usual greeting as he strode with purpose through the building, right down the workshop. He only took a second to analyze what Tony was doing- nothing dangerous, and nothing, he suspected, that couldn't be set aside- before grabbing him by his collar to drag him in to a kiss.
"Uh, hi?" Was about all he managed before Tony abruptly found himself occupied with a very thorough kiss. Which was definitely not something he was going to complain about, so he threw himself into it with enthusiasm until he finally had to pull back for air. "I thought you were at school," he said finally, if somewhat breathlessly.
"I was," Steve said, a little dazed if not breathless, and he started to step back, still holding a fist full of shirt to tug Tony with him. "I decided to skip tomorrow. I just...missed you. All I've wanted all week is to be back here, with you."
Tony stumbled a little at the unexpected pull, but allowed himself to be towed along without complaint. And with a steadily growing grin. "I'm a bad influence already, huh?"
The corner of his mouth turned up as he kept steadily tugging Tony back. "I don't know if you noticed, but almost every time I've skipped out of things, it's to spend it with you. You might be Puck's least favorite person."
He moved around so that he was behind Tony instead, arms going around his waist and chin on his shoulder as he walked him towards the elevator. His voice was soft as he mumbled into his neck, cheeks turning pink. "I didn't like going from last weekend to nothing. I missed you."
Walking with a giant wrapped around him wasn't the easiest thing ever, but Tony wasn't about to tell him to move. "At least it's a short week," he said with a huff of a laugh, and nudged Steve back against the wall once they hit the elevator and turned to face him. "Can't have it be too well known that I'm supporting truancy, or the teachers will…actually, I have no idea what they'd do. Look at me disapprovingly?"
Steve's hands went instantly to his waist, tugging. "This is actually probably my first day of actually classes that I've missed. Puck's just still bent out of shape from summer and the weekends." He leaned in to kiss his neck as his hands explored upwards. "But I'm sure they could always send Philip out here for a weekend, if they were really concerned," he added, smiling against Tony's skin.
"Yes, what I really need is Coulson judging my sex life," Tony said with an exaggerated shiver, and let himself be pulled flush against Steve's body. "But I will risk it, for you."
"I actually meant to make you run laps, pervert." Steve let his hands hitch up Tony's shirt, adding, "Don't let the elevator stop for people on the way up," as he tugged it over Tony's head, throwing it over his own shoulder as he turned and backed him against the elevator wall.
Tony startled a little as his shirt suddenly went missing, but let himself be pressed against the wall without complaint. It was just Steve, and that was fine."Why Steven," he said, fluttering his eyelashes, "I do declare."
Steve laughed, warm and happy as he crowded Tony's space, and let his palm rub at the seam of Tony's metal plate. "Oh, Anthony," he said, pushing his voice deeper like something he imagined the hero of a romance novel would sound like. "I-" he stalled out, his mind coming up blank, and he gave another little laugh and he kissed Tony's temple. "I've got nothin'. But you have very pretty eyes," he murmured, brushing his other hand down Tony's arm.
"All the better to see you with," Tony agreed as solemnly as he could around a wide smirk. "So have we decided to do this in the elevator or would you like to step outside?" He tapped once against Steve's back. "I could go either way, frankly. I do like me some Aerosmith."
"I don't know what you're referencing," Steve said as he moved down Tony's jaw, "but, no. That'd be rude to the other people who might need the elevator."
Still, he let himself kiss him for a few moments longer before pulling away, looking a little distracted as he grabbed Tony's arm and pulled him into the penthouse. He didn't waste any time, and pushed him up against the wall the moment they were inside. "You shouldn't live so far away," he said, sort of absently as he tugged off his own shirt, dropping them both on the floor.
Tony had begun humming Love In An Elevator mostly because he could, but the not-quite direct statement had him break off into a snort. Before he ran his hands over Steve's bared chest appreciatively anyway. "I'm like an hour away. And I like you and all, but I don't really want to live at the school if I don't have to."
"I wasn't saying you should," he grumbled quietly, his face going red and hands doing down to Tony's waist. "I don't want you to move, I was just...saying."
Steve paused, then flushed hotter, and he wished he hasn't taken off his shirt now that it was spreading down his chest. He was being stupid, he could feel it, and he knew he should ignore it, but something in what he said bounced off his own insecurities and left him feeling embarrassed. He should stop talking, but he just found himself continuing. "And it's only an hour away, but I'm not done with my regular school and training until at least six, and I have homework and my extra work and my art portfolio and my squad, and my job, and my tutoring. I have to shift and cut my work hours just to come by on the weekends, and I make sure to get the weekend's homework and training done during the week so I can actually spend time with you when I'm here. And still have to try to find time to keep up with my friends."
He was frowning by the end, his eyebrows creased in the middle, and he let out a deep, frustrated sigh as his hands dropped away. "I'm not being clingy. And I'm not asking you to move to the school, I was just saying."
"I...know?" Tony blinked, some of the pleasant fuzziness in his head fading away in favor of honest bafflement. They'd been teasing each other and then...what?
"Hey," he said, catching hold of Steve's arms to reel him back in. "I'm not accusing you of anything. I was just joking."
Steve went tense for a moment, not resisting, but not letting himself be able to pulled in either. He took one deep breath, then another, and when he exhaled, he closed his eyes and let the tension go with it. "I know," he said quietly, as he leaned into him and let his forehead press against Tony's temple. "I know, it just...hit me wrong. I felt like you were teasing me, really teasing, not just joking." He was still flushing hot, but he pressed a kiss next to Tony's ear. "I got embarrassed. I'm sorry."
Tony pulled back enough to give him a searching look, though he kept him close. "You sure? Because it should not be any surprise to you by now that I practically live with my foot in my mouth. The fact that I can manage to talk around it is just another one of my skills." The words were teasing, but the look Tony was giving him was still intent. Whatever was going on there, it had obviously hit harder than either of them were expecting.
Steve nodded, catching Tony's gaze for a moment before letting it drop away, wishing for everything that he wasn't still so flushed.
"I'd already been worried," he admitted quietly. "That I was being clingy, for showing up unannounced, or coming a day early because I didn't want to wait, when I already have a four day weekend."
"Okay, A. it's not showing up unannounced because you live here. You can be here any time you want." Which was easier to deal with than picking his way through the other issue. Tony wasn't always the best at choosing the right words, but for Steve he was sure as hell going to try.
"Look, texting every half hour to see what I'm doing would be clingy," Tony said finally, his voice almost unusually soft. "Coming by because you missed me after a couple of days that's…nice."
Steve paused before nodding, letting his weight lean into him. "Okay," he said, like he believed him, hand going through his hair. "I'll remember that." He still felt like he didn't know what he was doing sometimes, though he knew he was probably over-thinking the entire thing again.
"I'm sorry I snapped at you," he said, kissing him softly. "I've been stretched a little thin lately."
Tony just hummed and wrapped his arms around him, one hand sneaking up to curve around the back of his neck. "We can work it out. I'll come visit more often if you want me to, you don't always have to come here. And it's the holidays soon. We'll have plenty of time." Which he was actually looking forward to, in a way that the holidays had never really inspired before.
Steve let himself go easily, sighing as his weight leaned into Tony's,the touch and skin to skin contact soothing him steadily. "That might be nice. We don't have a lot of privacy at the school, but maybe sometimes." He kissed at Tony's jaw, hands smoothing down his boyfriend's back before resting at his hips. "My exams will be over soon, too. It'll be easier then."
His hands went low at his hips, thumbs circling at the front, and pushed Tony's back flush into the wall. "Thank you," he hummed against his throat, as his thumb hooked under the button of Tony's jeans.
He let out a little huff of air as Steve pinned him, but Tony just barely managed to get out a, "what for?" before his brain started losing interest in the conversation. He tipped his head back against the door to bare more of his throat, tugging Steve closer before it occurred to him that he was actually waiting for an answer.
Steve didn't waste any time, easily going closer until he was pressed against him, bracing his weight on a forearm above Tony's head as he used the extra room to mouth at his neck. "For making me feel better," he murmured, nuzzling at him as his hand worked on getting Tony's pants open. "You're a great boyfriend, Tony."
"Maybe you're just easily impressed," Tony said with a faint smirk and let his eyes close for a moment. "Not complaining. Keep doing that, please."
Steve smiled against his skin, rolling his eyes a little even if he couldn't see it. Once he got Tony's pants open, he just let them sag on his hips, moving his hand instead up to the other side of Tony's neck, using his thumb to push up his chin. "As you wish," he murmured against his throat, keeping his voice light before getting to work.
