Victor and Brian catch up over cookies
It was all the fault of the baking show Curtis had been streaming from the UK that Vic was on a baking kick again, with his laptop open on recipes and a smear of flour across his check he was trying out a few things.
Baking was calming for him, it made him think of his Grandma and Aunts and all the family he hadn't seen since his mutation had hit. Plus, he was good at it and the smells also drew people to the kitchen which was kind of nice. A good way to break the ice with new people beyond 'what to say to the green lizard?' awkward thing.
Brian entered the kitchen, and looked (well, by Brian standards) pleasantly surprised. "That smells lovely, Victor."
Victor turned to the older boy with a proud smile "Thanks, they didn't turn out quite right though." He had failed Queen Mary which was, of course, unacceptable. Still, he was enjoying himself at least.
"Still tastes good if you want to help yourself." He motioned to the rack of cooling gingerbread by the window. They didn't have the snap he'd been aiming for but they were otherwise passable. He'd since moved onto something else. "How're you?" He couldn't remember the last time he's talked with Brian, really.
"I am quite well, thank you." Brian came closer, and reached for a gingerbread cookie. "How are you? I believe it has been awhile, since I saw you last?"
"Yeah, kinda." And leave it to Brian to be forthright, not that Victor minded so much really. "I'm good. Summer was good, sun helps and all that. How was your summer? You've been travelling and actually doing shi-stuff, right?"
"Yes, yes. I was recently on a publicity tour with Elizabeth," Brian agreed. He ate some cookie, and raised in cheers to Victor. "Does the sun impact you more, due to your mutation?"
Victor nodded, slightly embarrassed as he weighed out sugar and butter. "I'm coldblooded like reptiles so, yeah the whole basking thing helps. I like summer best now." Which was painful as an Illinois kid to admit, he used to love the snow so much. "I saw on TV, all the media stuff you out kids do, I love the stage and stuff but that looks scary as hell to me. Got a lot of respect for you kids."
Brian was mildly amused at being called a 'kid' by a child. "I am gratified to hear it."
Having caught himself after saying it, Victor grinned a little and could feel a blush growing "Ok, so 'kids' was really the wrong word but you get what I meant, right?"
"Of course." He took another bite. "These are quite good."
"But room for improvement, right?" As if Brian could throw stones after that attempt at a swiss roll. "Little bit softer than I aimed for. Trying something a bit different now though so we'll see."
"And what are you making now, then?"
"Chilli Chocolate cookies, if you stick around you're welcome to taste test them too."
"Chili?" Brian was unsure he was into spicy chocolate biscuits. "Where did you get the idea?"
"A baking programme, apparently the combination is a Mexican thing?" Victor explained as he stirred. "Got curious, had to try it."
He had seen chili-chocolate before, Brian supposed, now that he thought about it. He'd never personally tried any of it, however. Whether it would be to his liking remained to be seen. "I see."
"You sound more like someone waiting for the gallows than being offered free cookies." The younger boy pointed out, obviously amused.
"Hardly," Brian disagreed, though his voice was also tinged with amusement.
"Good, or I'd be kinda insulted." Victor grinned back.
The older teen shook his head. "Far be it from me to ever insult a volunteer baker," Brian promised. "I assure you, I am grateful."
"You know, we could attempt our lessons again, if you wanted?" He suspected he already knew the answer though.
It was still a skill that somewhat eluded him, but Brian had been making far too much progress on his work recently to want to stop. "I fear I must devote more time to the laboratory this semester," he apologized.
"It's cool, you're busy I get that." And hanging out with lower classmen when he'd graduated probably wasn't very high on Brian's 'to-do' list. Couldn't really blame him on that one.
"I am truly thankful for the offer, however," Brian said, giving Victor a slight nod.
He got a small smile and shrug in response and a smile. "Well, you're still welcome to play test subject whenever you like."
"Very kind of you." Brian gave him a small smile in return.
"Let's see if you still think that after the cookies."
