Bigby spots something odd on the news involving a Surge graffiti, and immediately goes to warn Noriko.
Bigby flipped through the channels as he sat stretched out on the couch in the rec room. He landed on a news channel and stayed there a moment as he realized he’d come in on the tail end of a segment about Alpha Flight. It ended and another segment started, this one going to breaking news on the street. A young Asian woman--Connie Lang--was talking about the recent discovery of a body. Behind her, roped off with police tape, was the apparent crime scene. A familiar word spray painted on the brick caught his attention. Surge. He smiled to himself amused.
The reporter went on to say the cause of death closely resembled that of a body found the previous evening, postulating the work of a serial killer. A picture of another crime scene flashed up on the screen and this time Bigby’s eyes narrowed. There too, sprayed painted on the wall, was Surge. Turning off the TV, he stood and went to find Noriko.
Noriko was coming back up from the sub-basement, where she had been practicing on Claudia's targets. She was getting better and better at putting out exactly as much electricity as she wanted and, as usual after an extensive release of energy, she was in a good mood. She was also headed straight for the kitchen, because man, she was starving.
She came up on the first floor and spotted Bigby headed her way, so she gave him a nod and a friendly (for her), "Hey."
“Hey,” Bigby greeted back, turning to fall into step beside Noriko. “I was just looking for you. There’s something I need to show you. It could be nothing, but I want to be sure.” It probably wasn’t nothing, but he didn’t like to share that kind of thought until he had more proof.
Noriko frowned over at him, her steps slowing down. "What kind of something?" Or what kind of nothing, but he was being too serious for her to really believe that whatever it was was a nothing.
“It’d be easier to just show you,” Bigby replied. “Do you have time now? We can go to the library.” He didn’t have a computer in his room, so the public ones in the library would have to do.
"Sure," she agreed with a nod, turning in the direction of the library. Food could wait.
Bigby followed, walking in step with Noriko, and opening the door once they’d reached the library. He immediately went over to the computer tables, dropped into a chair, and opened the web browser. The default page was a news site fortunately, so it only took a few clicks for him to find the article he was looking for. He clicked on the first picture, bringing it up full screen, and then stood, “Have a seat. Look at the wall in the background of the picture. See anything familiar?”
Noriko leaned forward, her gauntlets on the desk, without taking a seat, to peer at the picture. "Yeah, sure, but that's not one of mine," she acknowledged after finding a graffiti of her codename. She reached for the mouse to click back to the article and read the text. The name of the victim rang a bell, but it wasn't until she read that he had several drug convictions that she realized that yeah, she'd known him. She frowned at the article. "He was an asshole. When he wasn't trying to shake us down, he was trying to sell us bad shit. Dangerous shit." She owed him some of the worst trips of her life, and she'd had more than a few of those. She hadn't risked it anymore, and she'd made it clear to him to steer clear of the kids she hung out with.
So someone had stabbed him. Good for them? Given the number of decent people getting murdered out there, she wasn't going to mourn this scum. "So what?" she asked, standing up and looking at Bigby with raised eyebrows.
Bigby leaned over the chair this time, scrolling further down the article to bring up another picture attached to it. “That’s what.” It was another crime scene with the same graffiti spray-painted on the wall. “Your name at two crime scenes, both of them drug dealer murders with similar M.O.s.” He dragged the two pictures around so they sat side by side. “The tags look new. The paint is bright. One of them is even written over other graffiti. I’d bet money these were done recently.”
"Shit," Noriko frowned as she looked at the second picture. Same color of paint, too - a blue that matched her hair. She straightened up, uneasy with where this was going. She might not know the second victim, but it still seemed like too much of a coincidence. What was for certain was that she couldn't let this go on without doing anything. "OK. It might be nothing. But." It might be something, too. It probably was.
She turned to face Bigby. "Enhanced senses, right? How about a trip into the City?"
Bigby nodded once, “I’m in.” He’d have helped even if he didn’t like Noriko. This could easily go beyond a few dead drug dealers. It could drag the school in, put it and the students in danger. “When do you want to leave?” He could be ready to go whenever Noriko wanted.
"I'll go and see if Philip wants to tag along," she replied, because of course her mind would go straight to him. Who else would she trust to have her back? And of course, she wanted to get on this asap. There was no waiting until tomorrow. "Half an hour?"
“I’ll meet you at the bottom of the stairs,” was Bigby’s answer. “I’ll get the names of the streets the crime scenes were on first. We’ll need those.”
Noriko nodded, and turned to go, but then she turned back to Bigby. "Thanks," she told him, holding his gaze for a beat, before she turned to go.
“No problem.” Bigby watched Noriko go before finally sitting himself back down in front of the computer.
