Karolina has a new roomie! Backdated to Feb 25th.
The room was bigger than she had expected it to be, though still was only a fraction of her sanctuary back home.
And she had to share it.
Just the thought was enough to make Cersei cringe. So far her roommate had yet to make an appearance which had given the fifteen year old, fresh off her visit to Fashion Week, the time to start unpacking her luggage. Some of her impressive wardrobe would have to go into storage it would seem but surely only a word to her father and it would be arranged.
Bedding in a deep crimson shade with gold embroidery were set out on her bed... and was in the middle of realizing she would have to make it herself when the sound of the doorknob turning reached her ears.
"Hello?" Cersei called out, more in question than greeting.
“Hi!” Karolina called back cheerfully as she came into the room. “Sorry, I was at lunch. I meant to get back sooner so I could be here when you got in, but I lost track of time.”
Dropping her book bag on her bed, Karolina went over to her new roommate. She was excited to have a roommate! She’d never shared a room before and she had been sort of feeling like the odd girl out not having one. “I’m Karolina,” she introduced with a friendly smile. “Welcome to the school.”
"Merci," the younger mutant replied, wariness and confusion disappearing under her carefully practiced mask of polite distance. "I am Cersei and please, do not apologize for your absence. I was only unpacking," she said with a gesture to her bed, still unmade, and the collection of luggage, both full and empty, at the end of it.
Karolina’s eyes went a little bit wide at the amount of luggage, but she joked good-naturedly, “That’s a lot of bags.” She tucked a strand of blonde hair that had fallen loose from her braid behind her ear. “Want some help unpacking? I know it took me forever to do on my own when I first got here.”
"I would not want to impose, especially not if you have other things to do," Cersei answered. In truth, she would not mind someone helping her empty the luggage, provided she was then able to sort and arrange what she needed, how she liked. Order and control... especially over her own possessions. Servants were one thing to deal with; roommates were another.
“It’s not imposing!” Karolina lifted one of the bags onto the bed and then smiled at Cersei, “And I’m totally free.”
Unzipping the bag, Karolina opened its top. There was clothing inside, gorgeous and packed in neat, carefully folded piles. She started to unpack, setting the piles down next to the bag so Cersei could tell her where she wanted it them go. “Where are you from?”
"Monaco," the younger girl answered, setting the sheets aside and instead opted to empty the nearest bag. Hair products and beauty supplies mostly. It was going to be difficult to organize them all without a proper vanity. "Though, I have spent extended time in Paris and London on occasion. And you? Where are you from?"
“I’m from Hollywood, California,” Karolina answered with a smile. She zipped up the now empty bag and put it on the floor before moving on to the next. Inside was more clothing. It was packed as neatly and with as much care as the bag before it had been. “I’ve been to Monaco once. It’s beautiful there.”
"It is," Cersei agreed with a nod. Much more beautiful than Los Angeles, though she refrained from voicing that particular thought. "Have you been at the school long?"
“A few months. Nowhere near as long as other people,” Karolina answered as she emptied the bag, piling the clothing beside the rest. “Everyone is really welcoming though. You’ll feel right at home in time.” She smiled at Cersei. “We can stop by the cafeteria after we’re done unpacking if you want. I could introduce you to a few of my friends.”
"That... would be lovely," she replied with a grin back. Networking was a way to knowledge and power. And even if her roommate seemed naive and far too gentle, her friends may not be. "And I do not know how fast it will be like home. My twin brother is not here."
“I’m sorry,” Karolina apologized, looking genuinely sympathetic. “That sucks. You must miss him a lot.”
Karolina zipped up the empty suitcase and set it on the floor with the others. “Um, just so you know, there are a lot of sets of twins here. I don’t want it to catch you by surprise or anything.” She gave Cersei a small smile.
Cersei returned it with as much grace as she could muster as ache squeezed her heart. "Thank you. I will continue to hold onto the hope that Jaime will join us here someday soon. Do you have siblings?"
“No,” Karolina answered, smile small and a little sad. “I always wanted one, but my parents didn’t. I think they worried they weren’t there enough for me, and with how busy they were there was no way they’d be there enough for two kids. I think they would have been great at it, but,” she shrugged, “they did what they thought was right.”
The new girl nodded once in understanding, though part of her wished her own parents had followed suit. Tyrion was a menace whose birth had caused the death of their mother and the alienation of their father. Life would have been much more joyful had Johanna and Tywin not produced any more children after the twins.
None of that was said aloud, however.
"I take it, then, you are not used to sharing a room, either."
Karolina nodded, cheerily replying, “Mhm, this is a first.” She lifted another bag up onto the bed. “We’ll figure it out together. I think it just comes down to respecting each other’s space. Is there anything about sharing a room that you’re worried about?”
There were plenty of things but none the Monegasque could give voice to. "No, I do not believe so beyond the usual adjustments," Cersei said with a smile. "Respecting each other's space sounds like a perfect policy to me."
“Me too,” Karolina agreed, her smile warm and friendly. “I think this will turn out great!”
