Karolina and Jeanne-Marie are adorable at the Halloween party.
Karolina was glad she’d come in time for the Halloween party. She still didn’t really know anyone, which could be a little awkward, but at the same time it was a great way to meet people. There was no homework to worry about, no tests or struggling grades. They didn’t have to think about the politics of the outside world, how they went to a school in secret or that tomorrow people might decide they hate mutants. It was just good music and good friends and amazing costumes. That was one of the great things about parties, how, just for a little while, reality took a vacation.
A new song started up and Karolina smiled as a majority of the gathered students cheered. The song, or perhaps the singer, was obviously popular. She clapped and cheered with them, not worried that she didn’t know the song or the singer, just getting caught up in the moment and happy to join in on the fun.
Jeanne-Marie saw the pretty new blond girl standing alone and bopped over to join her, a huge grin on her face. She'd been all over the place all evening, dancing with new people and old friends and Bobby and her brother--and it was just so much fun. "Hello!" She said brightly. "I love your costume--what is it?"
“Hi!” Karolina greeted back with a big smile. “Thanks! It’s Rainbow Brite. She’s a cartoon character from the 80s. She has a talking horse and she and all the Color Kids are in charge of keeping all the colors in the world safe. I love your costume too!” The thigh holsters were really cool! And a little bit sexy too, which is something she’d never realized that she’d like before. “Let me guess,” she hazarded. “Vampire slayer?”
"Mmm, yes," Jeanne-Marie agreed, delighted. "And I have been slaying both my boyfriend and brother all night. They are such good sports.
"I think I need to watch this Rainbow Bright. It sounds so perfect. And you can make rainbows, yes?"
“I can!” Karolina confirmed, then playfully made a face, joking warmly, “I think probably that makes my costume a little too on the nose, but, oh well!” She smiled at Jeanne-Marie. “Want to see?”
Jeanne-Marie clasped her hands in front of her in excitement. "Yes, please!"
Karolina grinned at Jeanne-Marie’s enthusiasm. She didn’t think she’d ever get tired of this, of showing off her mutation and having people be so excited about it. Everyone at the school was just so…proud to be a mutant and it made her feel less different, more a part of something. “Here goes!” She lit up, glowing bright as a star, warmth radiating off her. Pushing off the ground, she hovered a few inches above it. Colors flowed across her body, coming off her like little solar flares.
"Oh, it's beautiful," Jeanne-Marie said breathlessly, almost swallowed under the booming music. And so much like her--but not--that she was overwhelmed by that feeling of belonging she'd gotten when she'd first moved in and gotten the acceptance and friendship she'd never known could be real.
She also pushed off the ground, heavy black ankle-boots hovering a few inches above the gym floor, and let her light wash over her--not too much, not blinding, but just surrounding her skin and clothing with a soft white glow. She reached out for Karolina's hand. "We make quite a pair!"
The glow, soft and pale like the light of the moon, filled Karolina with awe. It was beautiful, and it was the first time she’d seen any mutation that was remotely similar to her own. “We do,” she agreed with a smile and she reached out too, taking Jeanne-Marie’s hand, her smile growing when their lights seemed overlap. “Yours is beautiful!” She looked so pretty, glowing like that.
Karolina flew a little higher and tilted her head, “Want to take a lap around the room?”
"Mmm, lets!" Jeanne-Marie was flushed with excitement under the glow. She kept Karolina's hand as she started around the gym--not too fast, at first. "It's so funny to be able to do this and no one thinks it's strange. I love it!"
“Right? I love it too.” It brought with it this overwhelming feeling of belonging. Something akin to what she’d felt the first time she’d gone to a message board for LGBTQA teens. It said that what she was, who she was, was amazing, but it was normal too. Completely normal and she wasn’t alone. There was a place in this world where she fit and that place had other people just like her ready to welcome her in.
Karolina closed her eyes for a moment, reveling in the flight, and then opened them to look at Jeanne-Marie, her smile playful. “Want to go faster?”
"Mmm, my brother is here, so my speed will be easy to bring." Jeanne-Marie winked. "Come on!" And she let go of Karolina's hand at last before taking off in a streak of bright white light.
Laughing, Karolina took off after the other girl, leaving a stream of bright, rainbow light behind her. She corkscrewed around Jeanne-Marie’s trail of iridescent light until she caught up to her, then dipped under her, flying on her back so she could give her a wave. Laughing again, she picked up speed, righting herself as she flew a little higher.
Jeanne-Marie couldn’t stop laughing either. She swirled around the other girl superspeed a few times, leaving a light blur, then they raced beneath the spider just as it sent confetti flying once. “I love the rainbows! They’re even prettier at high speed!”
Brightly colored confetti fluttered down around Karolina, some of it was silver and her rainbow and Jeanne-Marie’s light reflected off of it in wild glints of color. She laughed, flying faster, loving this. “So is yours!” she called back. Laughing, she weaved in the air, making patterns with her rainbow trail. “This is awesome!”
“It is!” Jeanne-Marie whizzed after her, winding up her soft white trail with Karolina’s beautiful multi-colored one. There was confetti in her hair, but she could be a festive vampire hunter. “We should do this all the time! Or play air tag sometimes.” She and Jean-Paul did it, but he was so much faster it wasn’t much of a contest, usually. Still, his very presence upped her speed brilliantly.
She swung around in an arc, back towards where they’d begun.
Karolina followed, slowing as she reached where they’d started and landing on light feet. She expelled her light and smiled at Jeanne-Marie, breathless from the exhilaration of flight. A laugh followed and she reached over to pluck a piece of confetti out of her hair. “Your hair is full of confetti,” she told her, amused. “We’ll definitely have to play air tag some time. That was so much fun!”
Jeanne-Marie giggled at the confetti, one hand over her mouth, the other flipping her hair over her shoulder to shake out any more that might be left in it. “I’m a festive vampire hunter.”
“It was fun. I’m so glad you came—well, to the party, but to the school, too. I love having people to fly with. It’s when I feel the most, you know, like myself.”
“Me too!” Karolina said excitedly, thrilled that someone else got it because that’s exactly what it felt like. Overcome with happiness, she gave Jeanne-Marie a hug. “It was great meeting you!”
"I feel the same!" Jeanne-Marie squeezed her tight. Then she pulled back and grinned at her, eye-to-eye. "I cannot wait to do it again."
Karolina grinned back at Jeanne-Marie, “Neither can I! We should even take it into the Danger Gym sometime. I bet we could have a lot of fun there.”
"Yes, we will light the whole place up!"
“We will!” Karolina agreed with a laugh.
