Angelo asks his roommate for a favour.
Halloween was nearly a week away now and Angelo was pretty well put together in terms of what he needed for party prep - costume, shoes, fake guns, all that good stuff. There was just one more thing that he needed to do to get his plan all finished up, and that involved having a chat with his new roommate. Hopefully the guy could be understanding!
"Sammy! What's happenin', chico?" Angelo called as he entered the room. Class had let out about a half our ago, so he figured that boy scout would be up there doing some homework.
Yes, he was doing homework. Sam had been trying so desperately to keep up with his homework ever since coming here, and he felt like he was finally catching up. It had been hard at first, as it felt like he'd forgotten so much, but he was getting there. His grades were starting to improve, and his mother was so proud of that. Sam still worried about his family back in Kentucky every day, but they were managing without him so far. Even his mother was starting to scold him for worrying so much, and that said something!
"Oh, just doin' some work. Same old, y'know," Sam spoke, and turned around to see his roommate. Upon doing so, he closed his books. He had time for a chat, if Angelo wanted. "Whatcha up to?"
"Well I was thinking about heading into town to get some smokes in a bit. Probably should look over my Lit assignment, though..." Angelo trailed off and chucked his book bag to the floor hard enough that it slid under his bed. That was a pretty good indication that said Lit assignment was not going to end up being looked at tonight. What a crying shame that was!
"But! Business first, amigo, I was gonna ask you a favour."
Sam raised an eyebrow, and couldn't help but laugh. "Is it to make sure you actually look over that assignment?"
"What? No! Nothing like that. Clearly you're fully engrossed in your own homework and you don't need to do anymore! Those books'll start tugging your brains out your nose after awhile, if you didn't know," Angelo told him matter-of-factly. "I'm talking about rooming needs. The type as in...my one year anniversary with my chica is coming up soon. Halloween, you know what I'm sayin'?"
"You've been with her a whole year? Wow, congratulations," Sam said with a smile. That was something to be proud of, and he knew that any gal would be pretty happy if their boyfriend remembered that. "How long you gonna be needing the room for? Just after the party, or are ya talkin' the whole night?"
"A whole year, si. Times flies when you're having fun." And fun they had, indeed, hence the need for the room. At the very least, it seemed like Sam wasn't too upset about the idea, and Angelo was sure happy about that! "I was thinking the night. Would you be cool with that?"
"Yeah. I'll find somewhere else to sleep--just don't make too big of a mess in here. I just cleaned up," Sam told him, and laughed. Oh, he could hear his mother's voice right now, telling him all the stuff about safe sex and what not. Just like when she'd caught him and his ex-girlfriend out by the swimming hole. Sam was pretty sure he'd turned red for a year after that! "Nah, but you have your fun and show your girl a good time at that party. I reckon she'll be head over heels you remembered."
"That's what I'm hoping! I'm a slob who can't get no job thanks to this," Angelo explained and pulled on his nose skin to let it droop down to his navel level. "I've gotta do something, know what I'm saying? You're good shit, Sam Guthrie. I owe you big time!"
"Don't worry about it none," Sam assured and shook his head. "Think of it as a lil' anniversary present for ya."
He laughed again. "Ya know, I almost can't believe how much sneakin' around goes on here without people gettin' caught. My old high school, you got caught makin' out in the hallway and you got a real stern talkin' to about abstinence."
That made Angelo snort. "Ese, your head woulda spun if you ever saw my school back in Cali."
"Yeah? Was it a lot more...open than it is here?" Sam asked, eyes widening. "That's almost hard to believe."
"Shit, dude, no one gave a shit what anyone else was doing. Folks had other problems to worry about!" Like being poor and not eating, and teachers doing a shit job of it. Not to mention cops. Were. Everywhere.
"Actually, the profs here don't meddle too much. That being said? Girl-boy sleepovers are still against the rules so we'll have to keep it shush-shush anyway. Just in case."
"I won't be spilling nothing to no one," Sam vowed, and held his hand up as a small gesture of doing so. "Have ya ever been caught here with her before? Or has anyone?"
It was weird they were against the rules, but not enforced.
"Not yet, amigo, and I plan on keeping it that way!"
"Fair enough," Sam laughed. "What time do you think y'all will be outta here in the morning?"
Just so he knew when it was okay to come back.
"I'll text you, si? And try not to make it too late." Angelo grinned. "We'll get your good boy self to class on time."
"Thanks a bunch," Sam replied. "Now why don't you add to alla this impressin' your girl, and do some homework with me."
He doubted Angelo would agree to it, but Sam always liked to try!
Sam was right about that. Angelo lit up another smoke and laid back on his bed. "Or you just read yours out loud and I'll listen to whatever catches my interests, si?"
"Well that's probably the closest we're gonna get, ain't it?" Sam asked, and shook his head. He'd never met anyone so casual and calm about their school work before. "Now you listen up, and I'll talk to ya about these math problems."
Angelo snorted and exhaled his smoke in the shape of a perfect 'o' shape. "'ight, teach. Whatever you say."
