The girls make plans for the party.

It was rarely difficult to locate Ellie, if one simply knew where to look--and Tessa always did. Her psychic presence had become more difficult to pinpoint, thanks to the work the Genoshan girl had done with the Professor and the cyberpath, but tracking her down was really a matter of probability and the process of elimination. In this case, having eliminated the art room and her bedroom, Tessa paused before one of Ellie's favorite linen closets and knocked softly.

Hands folded now behind her back patiently, she awaited a response.

Ellie was, indeed, in the closet. The difference today was that she was there not to hide away from people, but because she liked the enclosed darkness. In fact, she was actually in a fairly half decent mood today, depression be damned. She was lying on back with her legs up on one of the shelves, skirt pooled around the tops of her fishnet covered thighs and her hair was spread out around her wildly.

Please come in, hello! When Tessa opened the door, the cyberpath would be greeted with a large grin from the floor.

Pardon the intrusion, Tessa replied, seating herself on one of the higher shelves. She looked down at the other, significantly more powerful telepath, and said, "You are aware of the upcoming Masquerade, I assume?"

Ellie wished to point out that Tessa was never an intrusion. Or, rather, an always welcomed intrusion. However, she did like to think that her friend knew that quite well already...or so she hoped. If not, the still-pleased look on the younger girl's face would indicate that there was not a thing bothering her at the moment.

"Yes, I am aware," she replied with a nod, and propped up on her elbows. "Will you be attending, Tessa?"

Such was my intention, Tessa confirmed. "However, I do not yet have a costume devised." She looked down at Ellie, her own expression as stoic as ever, though she was sure the other girl could read her intentions perfectly well, given she did not attempt to shield them. "I had hoped that perhaps you might be willing to render some assistance in that regard?"

That time Ellie sat up, grin crossing her face a mile wide. "Oh yes! Please, please, please! You would look so very pretty with a corset on."

The cyberpath nodded; opinion of her appearance in a corset was generally favorable. "Thank you. The compliment is appreciated. Have you any suggestions regarding an appropriate mask pairing? I understand that the purpose of a Masquerade is the attempt--however futile, in this instance--to conceal one's identity."

"Hmmmmm different masks can be different fun, or not even a mask at all! Hooded cloaks or veils or a gas mask! Ohhhh or a mouth mask but not an eye mask, a scarf like Jonothon used to wear...or or or or or grand, extravagant eye make up!" Clearly, all of the options needed to be considered before deciding on any one thing! That was the fun in costume design, after all.

"Or lace. I like lace a lot, uh-huh."

Far from seeming overwhelmed by the options presented, Tessa appeared to consider each carefully. A veil, perhaps. Do you think that would make suitable accompaniment to a corset? Skirt/pants/bikini bottoms and boots?

"Skirt! And boots! Boots make alllllll costumes better, yes, and veils are oh so much fun because they are dark and mysterious...hide emotions so well, mhmm," Ellie contemplated. "But...maybe a veil would be better with a dress, perhaps..." Corset dress? Gown!

So many options and so hard to make choices!

"A bit of color to contrast with the severity of the black, perhaps?" Tessa suggested. And do not concern yourself overly with exploring all possible options; there will be other gatherings, at which we may try other combinations of cut, color, and texture. Is it your intention to join the festivity, as well?

Sometimes Ellie forgot that other people were fond of colour, and it made her chuckle. "Every colour looks wonderful with black! Purple, especially, but also red...and emerald green!" Blue was a cool look, but did not retract any severity as perhaps it was too cool of a colour. Ah, but yes yes I want to attend! I have a lovely hat to wear and I would like to challenge myself in the maze. Oh why haven't I entertained myself there before?

"I do not know," Tessa replied, reaching down to brush her fingers through Ellie's hair gently. But this seems a fine opportunity to address that oversight, I think. Have you given any thought to your costume, beyond the hat? I'm sure you are far more capable of that sort of creative functioning than I am.

Your mind is not as clear to me as it was. That thought was somewhat bittersweet, but Tessa was genuinely pleased that her friend had made such strides in shielding herself. Still, it was difficult not to miss the brilliance now dimmed. And it required a bit more effort to reach Ellie's mind now; it would not be long before she could keep the cyberpath out entirely.

"Striped socks," Ellie admitted, having not thought more into it as she would have liked. Well, no, perhaps that was not entirely true; Ellie was being rather indecisive about the entire thing thus far. She had one too many dresses in her closet, it would seem! Though...were there ever truly too many dresses? It was the type of notion that deserved some more thought!

My mind is clearer to me than it once was. Slowly and slowly it gets quieter little bits at a time, from a loud wave to a steady stream. I fear the stream is calm before the storm but...so far the storm is not coming. Not yet. That admission made Ellie smile, too.

"Mmm," hummed Tessa by way of agreement, her fingertips still sliding through the other girl's soft black hair. Physical contact was a poor substitute, in her estimation, for the immediate intimacy of psychic exchange, but perhaps that was best. Ellie had always found her powers more bane than boon. As long as you are noticing the improvement, that is the important thing. We will continue working on building your defenses, so that, should the storm ever come, you will be ready to weather it.

Ellie looked up and leaned her head against the side of Tessa's leg as she watched her. Do you think I am capable of weathering a storm?

You are capable of so much, it staggers even my considerable mental resources, Tessa affirmed with certainty. It is within you to be the storm, if you so desire. Your abilities could someday even eclipse the Professor's, with practice. Until then, we will keep each other safe, and grounded.

That was quite the compliment, and yet Ellie could do nothing but smile fondly at the older girl. I would protect you, Tessa. I would be dead, some days, without you. You are my reason for any capability I have at all, uh-huh.

I would attribute it more to your own hard work and natural talent, Tessa returned. But we may agree to differ. In any case, I am confident you will continue to improve, and that there are great things ahead of you.

I think we should have a dance during the Masquerade. It is, I think, customary.

The sound that came out of Ellie could only be described as an excited little squeak, and that time she got to her feet to smile at Tessa, hands folded neatly in front of her. I would love to dance with you! I have only ever danced with Pietro and with...with Felix too! You would be a most excellent partner, yes yes yes!

Tessa smiled, faintly as ever, but certainly there. And Ellie would be able to detect the other telepath's pleasure with her enthusiastic response, in any case. I never had occasion to, prior to my arrival at Xavier's. But I have found it to be a most enjoyable pastime. I exploit any opportunity to do so, especially with my closer friends.

Wow, oh...I love that I am your closer friend, oh so much. There was a lot of genuine honesty that came along with that thought, sort of projected as a wave of feeling rather than explicitly expressed. Ellie knew, of course, how close she and Tessa had become, but it was always so overwhelming to have it said to her. Tessa had to have known, right then, just how much it meant to the younger girl.

Will you perhaps consider a turn in the maze as well? Please? Even for just a little while?

The cyberpath basked in that warmth of feeling for a moment, then, I had planned to make an appearance at the party and then return to my more productive work ... but if it will please you, then yes. I am willing to test your maze.

Ellie grinned impishly. But of course it would please me. I hope it is very difficult, though, because I would like for it to take a long time to overcome! For mental stimulation, of course, but also for more Tessa time.
