Kevin and Nori discuss their abilities, and their lack of control.

When Kevin wasn't in the art room, or working on the play stuff, he tended to be outside. He wasn't an outdoorsy person in the least, but he wanted to enjoy the cool weather for long as he possibly could, and the remaining snow. He had absolutely no warm clothing, but his black trench coat and combat boots were good enough for him (and they had been for the entire winter, too).

Today, he spotted some blue lightning in the distance, so he decided to get up and investigate. It was probably someone practicing their powers as usual, but those things tended to interest him. Everyone else had good powers, unlike him. Oh, well. At least there was still some snow on the ground, and he could lay in it when he wanted to feel something.

Noriko was, this time, working on distance rather than accuracy, trying to send the electricity ahead as far as she could. When she caught movement out of the corner of her eye, she absorbed the electricity arching around her back into her body, for safety, then waited for the figure to be close enough for her to try and identify.

"Kevin, right?" she asked when he was close enough, her hands now back in her pockets for warmth. She thought it was him, from his pictures on the journals. She'd seen him around - hard not to see everyone, with as few pupils as they were - but they hadn't talked since their online introduction.

"Yeah," he nodded, folding his arms. "And you're Noriko."

It was hard not to notice the girl with the blue hair. Usually, Kevin didn't give a flying shit about most people in the school, but some people could still catch his attention at times. Some people he found to be extra nice or just simply interesting. It all depended, Kevin had found. Sometimes he found himself drawn to the nice people, and sometimes just to the ones who stood out.

"You have cool hair," he commented, and gestured to it.

"Thanks," she answered with a nod. "You have a shitty power." That was her kind of humor, as dry as her tone of voice, but there was a spark of humor in her eyes. Not making fun of him, just saying screw-you to the universe, pretty much. "What are you doing out there?"

Yeah, Kevin knew he had a shitty power, and he didn't care that she said it. He liked when people didn't sugar coat that shit, or try to throw 'it could be worse' at them. Fuck that! He could tell Nori was pretty cool already. He supposed, anyways.

"Well my shitty powers don't wither away snow, so maybe I'll get lucky before winter ends and catch some frostbite," he replied. "My roommate's a healer, so I'm sure I could get away with doing that."

He glanced to her hands for a moment. Energy powers were kind of interesting, mostly because he didn't have a flying fuck idea as to how they worked. "Do you have to practice your powers outside?"

"Depends what I wanna practice exactly," Noriko answered, which she figured was a 'no', only one with extra info. "I used to practice the speed in the gym, too. Snow's a bitch to brake on, and I was crap at it to start with. Is your roommate Josh?"

She would kinda dig it if he was. The two boys seemed to be such opposites - at first sight, it wasn't as if she knew either of them, really.

"Yeah, he is," Kevin answered. He and Josh were fairly opposite, especially when it came to their powers. Josh was healing and life, while Kevin brought death. Josh was a lot more than his roommate, too, but he wasn't going to say anything about that to Nori; he didn't know her well at all, and it wasn't her fucking business. "The headmasters wanted to put the night and day people into one room, I guess. That's what they do."

"Not a bad move," Noriko stated. "He can heal himself from your decay if you stumble into him, right?" Living in close quarters, she hoped so.

"Yeah. He's one of the few people in this school who I can touch without killing them. There's Paige Guthrie, too, but only if she rips her skin off into something non-organic," Kevin explained to her. "There's ways around it if people have the right powers, but only then."

"Just wait until we get someone that can cancel out other people's powers, I guess?" Noriko offered. Given the crazy powers around school, that one would seem more logical, and way useful.

"Yeah, like that'll ever happen," Kevin mused in somewhat cranky matter. Having someone like that with powers who actually worked on him would mean he had good luck, and he didn't ever, so he wasn't holding his breath. "That'd be kind of a dumb power, though."

"I don't know, I think it's pretty useful," Noriko replied with a small shrug. "If it means they can stop me from frying them or anyone else if I lose control, I'm all for it."

"I guess that's true," Kevin shrugged. Sometimes, he didn't even consider that other powers could be immensely dangerous to everyone around them. It wasn't just selfishness, either. He was fairly depressed so he had a hard time seeing around other people's problems because his weighed down so heavily on him. Sometimes through his eyes, no one could ever have it worse than him. "Do you lose control a lot, or something?"

"Doc's got me on the right kinda drugs, so no," Noriko answered, wryly, because that also meant that naturally, yeah, she did. She shrugged. Kevin had it so much worse than her; even if she was the kind of girl to feel sorry for herself, she couldn't anymore. "But you never know. Better safe than sorry."

"Wait, you can use drugs to control your powers?" Kevin questioned her. He didn't even think that was an option, so he was surprised by Nori's answer.

"I can," Noriko answered with a shrug. "Pretty sure I'm the only one at school, though, and they're working on something so I can do without them." He could always ask the doc, but Noriko wouldn't have much hope if she were him. Their powers functioned very differently, from what little she knew of his.

It was true that they had very different powers, but Kevin still wanted to talk to Moira about it. Of course, he was a walking symbol of bad luck, so it likely wouldn't work for him like it would for her, but he still wanted to try. "What kind of drugs are they? Just ones she made up for you?"

Noriko took the bottle of pills out of her coat pocket and threw it at him. Plastic was not organic, right? "They're downers," she explained. "Make my brain slow down, make me chill."

Kevin was wearing gloves, so even if the bottle was organic, he wouldn't be able to destroy it. As he caught the bottle, he looked it over, and couldn't help but feel really jealous. Nori was lucky that she had this, and it made him think for the millionth time that everyone was going to get control over themselves eventually, everyone but him. Maybe he wasn't exactly trying that hard, but he felt like it was pointless sometimes because he was so hopeless. Maybe never learning to control his powers was necessary, though; it could be a personal prison as punishment for murdering his father like he had. He'd deserve something like that for being such a monster, Kevin thought.

"Does it make you feel weird?" he asked her. "Slow, or whatever?"

"It makes me feel stoned," Noriko replied, evenly, maybe even a little flatly. "Like the whole freaking world's muted." It was better than the way everything got away from her when she didn't take the pills - her thoughts and the electricity.

Kevin tossed her pill bottle back to her, and mulled over her comment. He wished his whole world could be muted, but he doubted that'd ever happen unless he killed himself, or something.

"And you like that, I'm guessing?"

Noriko shrugged, unease at talking about this in depth manifesting as her walls coming down. "Pros and cons."

Kevin watched her, then shrugged before he looked towards the sky. "At least you won't hurt anyone."

"Yeah, tell that to any addict out there," Noriko wryly answered, but she could see what he was saying. "But yeah, your shit's worse." His shit was worse than anybody she knew.

"Being addicted is different than needing to take drugs so you're not fucked," Kevin remarked. He was glad Nori knew that his powers were worse than anyone's, though, because in his mind, there was no power that could compete with his in awfulness. Not only could he kill someone, but he saw death everywhere and his powers always wanted to be used. It was really hard to fight sometimes. Yet somehow, he managed it.

"Being addicted is a consequence of needing to take drugs so you're not fucked," Noriko shot back, as always as merciless with herself on the subject as she could be. Especially with the hope of another way to deal dangling just out of reach, right then.

Kevin eyed Nori as she responded. "It's the only way you can control them whatsoever?"

Noriko shrugged, lips briefly twitching down. "MacTaggart and Xavier are working on something else. We'll see if that works out. I'm so looking forward to detox." The non-sarcastic truth was, she was looking forward to after detox.

Kevin wondered what it said about him that being addicted to drugs felt like something worthwhile if he could control his powers. Then again, suicide could also fix that whole walking grim reaper thing he had. He was a pretty depressing person, and though he did have Moira and Josh trying to help him with his powers, the reminder of what he did to his dad was always there looming in every part of his day. He was near obsessed with it at this point.

"Well, at least you got this super fucking rich place to detox in," Kevin remarked, and managed a little smile. "Not some crummy ass hospital."

Noriko snorted. "Yeah, there's always that." She was only just thinking that maybe Josh could help her with the physical side of detox. She'd have to ask him about it, if whatever Xavier and MacTaggart were working on worked out. "Anyway, we're not there yet. Happy little addict in the meantime."

"Sounds fun," Kevin remarked, then glanced towards the school. It wasn't until then that he realised how long he'd been talking to Nori out here, and now he was cold. Sure, Kevin had spent all night in the snow once, but he wasn't feeling super self destructive today. Besides, the only person he liked to freeze with was Ellie. "I'm getting cold, though. You wanna go inside and watch a movie, or something? I bet you don't have shitty taste in them."

"I have the worst taste in movies, and I love it," Noriko answered, but shrugged and started walking towards the mansion. "Action flicks all the way. What do you like?"

Kevin followed after her, hands in his coat pockets as he did so. "I like action movies, horror movies. My favourites are b-rated stuff, but I'll watch most stuff that isn't a dumbass dude-bro comedy, or a romantic bullshit thing."

"OK, we're so compatible, good," Noriko commented happily. Well, she didn't sound happy, but she didn't sound wry as all hell. Same difference.

"Considering some people here, yeah, I'd say so," Kevin remarked, almost smirking as he spoke. At least he'd have a decent afternoon for once in his life.
