Cecil and Carlos help each other get ready for the Halloween party in completely not-awkward ways.
"Be still."
Carlos touched the side of Cecil's jaw lightly to steady it as they carefully applied gold foil to the opposite side of his neck with tweezers. They were sitting directly in front of Cecil on his bed, knees knocking against his through the thin jersey of their lounge pants as they tried to get close enough to work. Their skin had been raised with goosebumps for the last half hour; it'd been a mistake not the wear something heavier than a tee shirt, clearly, but they hadn't wanted to risk sleeves falling and messing with their work.
It was worth it at any rate, Carlos thought with no small amount of pride. It was taking a while, and their shoulders ached a little, but Cecil's hands and wrists were beautifully coated with gold leaf (fake, of course, but the effect was still lovely) and they were now working their way up his neck.
"You should tell me if you have any difficulty getting this off tonight," Carlos said, focusing their eyes on Cecil's for a moment. "Either way, use some lotion when you get it off, the remover will dry out your skin. You can use mine, if you need to. It's on my shelf."
Cecil nodded very seriously, or at least as much as he could without ruining Carlos' work. For the most part, he'd been so still it was as if he was barely breathing, somehow going even stiller ever time Carlos instructed him to. "Of course," he said, wanting to make sure Carlos knew his advice had gotten across.
Carlos' lip quirked up into a smile for just a moment before they looked past Cecil again, and to the work they were doing. They picked up the brush, applying the glue to his skin before using the tweezers to apply another piece of foil. "Thank you for choosing this for your costume, if I haven't said." They rolled their shoulders and neck before picking up the brush again.
"Oh, well," Cecil said a bit awkwardly, hands twitching like he wanted to gesture with them before thinking better of it. "I liked the story you told. About Midas. Becoming something you aren't is something of a theme for the holiday, isn't it? And I am quite certainly not made of gold."
Carlos smiled, and they touched at his arm when it twitched, just soft at the elbow to remind him not to move. "You've put a lot of thought into this." That wasn't surprising; Cecil thought a lot about a lot of things. They carefully tilted his chin up and over, hand going to support his neck as they started applying foil up his ear and jaw, and their tone was a little conspiratorial as they added, "I just wanted to wear a dress."
"It is a very nice dress," Cecil said encouragingly, placidly letting himself be moved around. Carlos was touching him. Anything was worth that.
Carlos' head ducked, and they smiled again as they studied the foil. "Thank you. "
"For what?" He asked, turning just enough to look curiously at them.
"I..." Carlos, for a moment, looked mildly embarrassed. They lifted one shoulder in a shrug and got back to work laying the foil. "For the compliment."
"Oh," Cecil said brightly, "you're welcome, then."
Carlos nodded and went back to work. A few more minutes and they finished, sealing it off with a light spritz of fixative on the tops of Cecil's hands. "That should made it strong enough that it doesn't fall off as you move your hands," Carlos explained as they set the tools back. They helped roll down the sleeve of his dress shirt - they'd instructed him to put it on before they'd started working - and buttoned the cuffs shut. "Done. Tell me if you need help with any of the fine motor tasks as you finish."
Cecil blinked at them, something slightly slow about the gesture, as if he'd been mesmerized by watching the proceedings. "What else do I need to do?"
Carlos gave them a little bit of an odd look and a smile as they sat at their own desk. "Your vest and shoes, Cecil," they reminded as they opened up the makeup bag and got out the makeup. Looking into the mirror, they started to apply the gold lip liner.
"Oh. Right." Cecil gingerly got to his feet and crossed over to where the vest was hanging, then studied it for a moment. Getting into it without using his hands was going to be interesting.
Carlos, watching from the mirror, gave an amused smile as they watched him stare. "Here," they said, then finished the last of the lipstick before getting up. "Let me help." They pulled the vest off and held it up, the arm holes held wide enough that he could easily slip his hands in without touching.
"Thank you," Cecil said, beaming, and eased himself into the vest. It was quite a nice piece of clothing. Carlos had excellent taste.
"Of course." Once the vest was on, they moved in front of Cecil, looking over him critically as they buttoned him up. They took a moment, straightening and smoothing the vest and the shirt's collar.
Once they were apparently satisfied, they gestured over to the bed. "Sit down."
Without so much as a blink, Cecil did exactly what he was told. "Shouldn't you be getting ready?" He asked with a hint of curiosity.
"I have time." They knelt down in front of Cecil and, holding on to his ankle, slipped the shoe on his foot. They quickly followed it with the other, and smiled up at him as they tied the laces. "From what I understand of popular culture, appearing somewhat late is actually desirable."
"I guess," Cecil said a little dubiously, but he was hardly going to complain about more time having Carlos to himself. "Thank you," he added, once everything seemed to be sorted.
"Of course." With one last tug at Cecil's leg hem, Carlos got up and sat back down at the desk. Their lips were done, so they moved on to their eyes, carefully lining lining them into a winged tip with gold liquid liner. After the first was finished, they paused. "You don't need to wait for me. If you don't want to."
Cecil tipped his head curiously, then did it again when the light caught the gold adorning his face in odd ways. "What else would I do?" He asked absently, busy trying to find the best ways to make the gold flash.
Carlos thought maybe he would want to go ahead to the party, but didn't actually want to encourage him to leave, so they just shrugged. Obviously he wasn't only waiting around for politeness.
They watched him out of the corner of the mirror, smiling to themselves as he played with the light. "You look very handsome, Cecil," they said quietly, still looking at him through the mirror.
"Thank you!" Cecil beamed over at them. "I mean. Obviously. Thank you. You did do most of it, after all."
Carlos wanted to say summering else, but wasn't sure what, so they just smiled over at him before starting to slip the collections of rings on their fingers.
It wasn't long before they were carefully pulling on the dress, holding it to themselves with one hand as they worked up the zipper. They struggled with it for a moment, then sighed when it was definitely stuck where they couldn't quite pull it. "Cecil?" they called softly from the bathroom, and cracked the door. "Could you help me?"
"Of course!" Cecil said brightly as he got to his feet. It would only be fair, after all. Remembering that Carlos was in fact in the bathroom made him stop short just in front of the door. "Er. What did you need help with?"
They pushed the door open the rest of the way, back facing Cecil. "The zipper. It's stuck between my shoulder blades, I can't reach it."
"Oh. Right." Cecil gingerly reached out to catch hold of the zipper, mindful of not mussing his hands as he untangled it. It was slightly hard to do without doing too much looking in Carlos's direction, but Carlos had gone into the bathroom to get changed, so clearly they didn't want Cecil to see yet. Cecil could respect that. Urges or otherwise.
It took Carlos a moment to understand what Cecil was doing, their eyes furrowing as they watched him through the window, but then they smiled. "It's alright, Cecil," they said, kindly. "You can see what you're doing, it's just my shoulders."
The sound Cecil made was mildly on the skeptical side, but he did at least get the zipper finished. "There you are," he said, taking a step or two back.
"Thank you." Once Cecil had stepped back, Carlos turned and stepped out if the bathroom as well. They examined themselves in the mirror, smoothing their dress carefully before smiling at Cecil through it. "I think we're ready. "
Now that he could see the entire thing together, Cecil couldn't help but stare. Wide eyed. "I. Yes." He was quiet for a moment long. "You look. Amazing."
Carlos' face broke into a wide grin, and they cleared their throat as the turned around to face him. "I-thank you," they said, their voice going soft as they smoothed needlessly at the dress. They looked at Cecil for a long moment, then cleared their throat and glanced away. "Um. Should we go?"
"Right," Cecil said with a startled blink, as if he'd forgotten they were supposed to be going somewhere. "Yes. Uhm." He turned to offer Carlos his arm.
"Be still."
Carlos touched the side of Cecil's jaw lightly to steady it as they carefully applied gold foil to the opposite side of his neck with tweezers.
