Kurt and Jeanne-Marie go out for lunch and Kurt shares some news.

Kurt leaned against the doorframe to Jeanne-Marie’s classroom as the students filtered out. He gave Jeanne-Marie a small smile and wave when she looked his way, then gestured for her to take her time. He watched as she finished up with a student. She made such a wonderful TA.

The last student finally left, clearly less confused than she had been before, and Kurt walked over to Jeanne-Marie’s desk. “Hallo, Jeanne-Marie,” he greeted warmly, giving her a kiss on the cheek.

She planted one on his, then took his hand, still glowing (metaphorically) from a job well done with her student. "Kurt, mon cher. Have you come to brighten my day?"

“When do I not?” Kurt asked with a grin. “How was class, mein Freund? I saw a lot of smiling faces.”

"Good--today." She chuckled and squeezed his hand before letting go. "But I enjoy it even on the days when I don't, if you take my meaning."

Chuckling, Kurt nodded. “I understand completely.” He offered her an arm. “What do you say to a break? We could get some lunch, maybe?”

"Mmm, yes! Shall we go out?" She took his arm and started towards the hall.

Kurt grinned. “I think that sounds like a great idea. Where would you like to go?” His shoulder bumped against hers. “My treat.”

She bumped back. "I would like ice cream. Anything nutritious we have to eat before that, I can leave up to you."

“Deal. I think I know exactly where we should go.”

When they got into Salem Center, Kurt led Jean-Marie to a bistro that was down the street from the ice cream parlor. It was a nice little place with brick walls and outdoor seating in the warmer months. He opened the front door for Jean-Marie with a smile. “After you.”

"Mmmm they have the best bread here," she led the way and caught the attention of the host, who led them to a table--looking interestedly at Kurt, of course, but there was nothing mean in it. As she sat, Jeanne-Marie said, "So, tell me all your news, Kurt."

A smile, big and brimming with an excitement that couldn’t possibly be contained, overtook Kurt. He leaned forward and took one of Jeanne-Marie’s hands in both of us. “I am visiting home. I get to go home!”

She squeezed him and covered his other hand with hers, so they were well tangled up. "I'm so happy for you! How long has it been?!"

Kurt’s smile grew at Jeanne-Marie’s reaction. “Since before I came to the school,” he answered. “It feels even longer, though.”

"Tell me your plans!" she demanded with a grin. "Who will you see, where will you go, and for how long?"

“The last three weeks in July,” Kurt answered. “Blaine is coming with me. We are going to visit my family and the rest of the troupe. They are still on the road, so we will be traveling with them.” He paused, nervous and excited and stomach filled with all kinds of flutterings. “And I am going to meet my dad.”

Though she sensed the nervousness easily--Kurt wore his heart on his sleeve--Jeanne-Marie couldn't help but be mostly excited for him. She couldn't imagine, if one of her parents suddenly appeared, how she'd feel. It was an opportunity so few people ever had, and she knew Kurt of all people appreciated it for all it was worth. "That's so exciting! Will you go to him, or will he come to the troupe?"

“We will go to him.” Kurt stopped there when their waiter came over to introduce himself and take their drink orders. When they’d give them and their waiter had left again, he added, “I thought it might be a little...overwhelming? for all of us if it was with the troupe.”

"Oh yes, good point." Jeanne-Marie scrunched up her nose and leaned one elbow on the table, then propped her chin on that hand. "So--I don't know how this works. Does he have a--a castle?"

“He does, actually. It is so surreal.” Kurt let out a huff of disbelieving laughter. “Gott, my father is a baron. How is this my life? I am still trying to wrap my head around it. Honestly, I have no idea what I am doing.”

"Maybe seeing it will make it more real?" Jeanne-Marie suggested, then laughed with him. "No, I know it won't. It took me a year to believe I had a brother and that I lived at Xavier's now--I know just what you mean!"

Kurt laughed. “I think seeing a castle will make it more surreal.”

"True!" She couldn't stop giggling, now. "How long will you stay? If you have a few weeks there, that might help?

“Two weeks with my family, one week with him.” Though, Kurt supposed, he was family. That was another thing that would take getting used to as well. How to talk about his two families, what words to use, what words felt right.

"It's a good start." She reached out to squeeze his hand. "I can't wait to hear all about it. And maybe meet him someday!"

Kurt squeezed Jeanne-Marie’s back. “I cannot wait either.”

He thanked their waiter as he brought their drinks over, then said, “Gott, I have spent this whole time talking about myself. Bitte, how are you? What have you been up to?”

"Oh!" She laughed and waved it off. "I am fine, really. Just looking through my readings for the upcoming semester's courses already. I don't want to be stuck in a room crying with Blaine all finals week again.

"Otherwise nothing much. Nothing as exciting as visiting a castle."

“Nonsense, mein Freund,” Kurt replied with a smile. “I find anything going on in your life exciting. I want to hear all about it.”

"Well," this year I get to take upper-lever courses in psychology, so I am very excited," she admitted, leaning in and lowering his voice as if telling a secret. "I am especially looking forward to my intro to Neuropsychology course, which integrates neuroscience and psychology--I think it's so fascinating..."
