Teon and Effy meet yet again, and Effy introduces Teon to something new. Warning: Recreational Drug Use.
The seasons were changing, slowly. It would be autumn, soon. Teon could smell it in the air, the hints of impending decay, the first signs of the imminent retreat into the earth and bark to survive winter until springtime.
It didn't matter. The grounds were still beautiful. He was contemplating his route back indoors, lounging against a sturdy branch of a tree. He was visible from the windows of the girls' dormitories, but he was unable to see who was in, with the sun glaring on the windows. Not that Teon was trying to spy. He'd just found a great spot to lounge while still able to look about the grounds, shirtless as usual for him, basking in the sun. He'd been told, very sternly by the two old men in charge of the school, that he wasn't to go in the girls' dormitories. That made sense to Teon; he'd no sooner set foot into another boys' room without being invited. One didn't enter another's den without the goodwill of the owner. That just made sense.
Funny how so many of the headmasters' rules made sense when so many of them didn't. Teon stretched in the sun, muscles in his chest and arms flexing, loosening. It felt good to be this warm. But soon, he thought, he'd need to find something more interesting, or else he'd sleep the day away, and be awake all night.
Effy was thankful for the gifts Sirius had left behind. Spliff was always a good idea, in her oh so humble opinion. But, she didn't want to be a too terribly inconsiderate roommate. She ambled over to the window, planning on just opening it and smoking there and was surprised to see Teon there. She quirked a brow and waited to see how long it would take him to notice her there.
The sound of the window opening attracted Teon's attention well enough, and when he noticed it was Effy, Teon grinned and waved to her. "Hi, Effy!" he said, loud enough to cover the several yards between them.
"Teon," Effy greeted back, voice semi-monotone though not unkind. "What brings you to my window?"
"Sunshine," he said, pointing at the sun in case it wasn't obvious. "Bored," he added. But now Effy was here, and she would probably provide at least a little bit of entertainment, even if it was just conversation like last time.
Effy took a pull and let the smoke out slowly in a steady stream as she eyed him. Cocking her head, she asked, "The spliff bother you?"
The term made Teon chuckle. It sounded funny. He shook his head. "No," he said, simply. It smelled different, but similar, to what she had been smoking last time.
"Want any?" Effy offered, curious.
Sharing was nice of her, and Teon had to admit that he was just a little bit curious. He shrugged. It would at least break the tedium. "Sure," he said, gathering himself up onto the branch, making a small gesture for her to back up, looking like he was going to jump from the branch to through her window.
Effy moved back, flopping on to her bed. She had to admit, watching someone scale a tree and jump into a window was mildly impressive.
Once she was safely out of the way, Teon leaped, straightening his body and gliding through the open window. He curled up, after, rolling smoothly onto her floor, and wound up sitting near the side of her bed, grinning. At least that had been fun. And now he knew of a fast way to get to Effy's room if she ever wanted him to visit. "Hi," he said, grinning.
"Hello there," Effy responded back. Wordlessly, she held out her spliff as a welcoming offer.
Despite the size of his hands, Teon delicately plucked it from her fingers, and gave the end of it a curious sniff. A very interesting smell, Teon had to admit. Cigarettes were common where he was from; several of his old friends, before his enlightenment, had smoked. This, however, was a different smell. Between observing her, and his prior knowledge and motivation to try it, Teon put it to his lips and took a drag on it as if he'd done it a million times, taking time to savor the smoke, which tasted quite different than he'd expected. He took it from his lips before giving a short cough and a smile. Not as bad as he might have expected.
Effy gave him a small grin in return. "Easy there tiger," she chuckled at the irony. "Like it?"
He nodded. It certainly wasn't bad, just a bit surprising. He offered it back to her, figuring that he was supposed to keep sharing with her.
Taking it back, Effy didn't hesitate for her next pull. "So, classes boring you already?"
He leaned against the side of her bed and nodded. "You too?" he guessed. Dance and Equestrian were alright. He understood horses, and he understood the movement of bodies. Everything else just sort of seemed useless.
Offering up the spliff again, Effy shrugged. "It's school...I'm expected to take my A levels eventually."
Teon accepted it, and took a pull on it, not coughing that time. "Not fun," Teon said, in reference to school. It wasn't a particularly dour statement, it was just matter-of-fact. He offered it back to Effy, silently noting that he kind of liked being in a cozy, smoky space, window for ventilation or otherwise. "More fun to run. Lay in warm grass."
"Not fun indeed," Effy agreed. Although running for no purpose--no thank you.
Leaning against the side of the bed, Teon stretched out a bit, getting more comfortable. "What is fun?" Teon asked her, propping his chin up on the mattress and giving her a thoughtful look. It was probably less of a question about her definition of fun, and what she found enjoyable, but Teon only recognized the ambiguity of his question a few moments after asking it.
Going with the idea that he was asking her what she enjoyed, rather than Teon being existential, she replied with a shrug, "Drugs. Messing with people."
Teon could appreciate the messing with people aspect of life, and he grinned at that. Tackling Tybalt into the pool had been one of his favorite things he'd done recently, and he'd been debating on doing something humorous to the quiet, angry-looking boy who was constantly practicing in the woods and such, but Teon wasn't sure he wanted both of his arms broken. "Pranks?" he guessed, but went ahead and agreed. "Messing is fun." He'd have to think of some more fun things to do with people, or to them. He was also a bit sad to think it would be too cold for swimming, before long. He sighed. "Swimming is fun," he added.
"Pranks, yeah. Sure, swimming is fun," Effy told him with a smirk. Swimming was pretty good--secluded, water, swimming costumes.
"Too cold, soon," Teon remarked, on the topic of swimming. Which was a bit of a bummer. The snow would be fun, though. Something to dig around in and throw at people for fun. The leaves would be good for that, too. "What is spliff?" Teon asked, finally deciding to actually ask the question.
"Weed. THC," she tried to explain, unsure if he knew what those were. Oh well, you learn something new everyday, right?
Teon made an "oh" face, nodding. He knew what that meant, more or less. "Okay," he said, seemingly perfectly fine with it. It wasn't his business, after all, what people did.
Effy gave him a slight smile before taking another drag. "First time?"
Another nod. "Not so bad," Teon said, easily. It was also just kind of nice to sit and talk. Effy wasn't bad to look at, either.
"Personal go to of mine. Never of short supply back home," Effy commented, relaxing more into her bed and wondering if Becky knew what weed smelled like.
Well, they'd find out later then, wouldn't they?
"Helps?" Teon assumed, tapping the side of his head, figuring she was using it, at least partially, for help with blocking out the thoughts of others, like they'd mentioned before.
"Helps," Effy agreed, taking another drag while she looked Teon over.
"Good," Teon said, grinning and leaning his chest against the edge of Effy's bed, folding his arms on top of it. Effy was nice to watch and look at, he realized. He'd sort of known that when they first met, it was just that he'd realized that he found her attractive. Which was a bit unusual, for him. Before his enlightenment, there was school and such to keep his mind occupied. Afterward, there was survival. And now he was here, in the sanctuary... what would he do with his time, now? It made him wonder.
"Stare at girls often?" Effy teased, catching his gaze. Didn't need to be a mind reader to notice that. She didn't mind it, though. She didn't dress the way she did to not be stared at.
"Not always," Teon returned, grinning. "Effy is pretty," Teon said, casually.
Effy gave him a look, neither kind nor unkind, before turning her eyes towards the window. "Thanks."
Teon shrugged, wondering why she didn't seem pleased by that. It was his knowledge that girls liked being told they were pretty, but maybe she thought he was lying... It was just the truth to him, though. Teon could find something attractive about nearly everyone, though. "Welcome," he said, looking out the window as well and smiling.
Simple. That was the word Effy would use for Teon. He was remarkably simple. It was an interesting change of a pace, and one she found herself a little bit lost in, given her lack of read on him. Effy knew she was hot--but being called pretty was a new one.
He turned back to her and saw her still looking a bit forlorn, which wasn't what he'd been hoping for. Teon's face scrunched up a bit, wondering if maybe he'd upset her. Still, she wasn't telling him to go, or at least she wasn't yet, and Teon took that for a good sign, at least on that front. Well, maybe he could help out.
With surprising grace for someone who was pretty much half-laying on the floor, Teon got himself up onto the bed next to Effy, giving her a bit of room if she wanted, but also being close enough that maybe the companionship would be nice. Didn't have to worry about shoes on the bed; Teon rarely wore shoes around the school grounds, and today was no exception. At least he took care of his own hygiene. "This okay?" he asked, quietly, not wanting to interrupt her thoughts if she was thinking about things
"Fine," Effy answered, taking a long drag. Because it was fine, wasn't it? Absolutely fucking peachy.
He grinned at her, but it faded, seeing that she was still stoic and seemingly put off by him. He couldn't grasp what he'd said that was wrong, or whatever, but more importantly, he couldn't figure out how to make it right. And it was honestly bothering him... He thought she might feel better with a hug, but given the fact that his statement of how pretty she was went over poorly, physical contact was likely to upset her more.
Feeling the shift in mood, Effy finally shifted her eyes over to Teon and gave him a small smile. "You take things personally, don't you?"
He shrugged, smiling at her. "Just want people to be happy," he said, possibly the longest sentence he'd ever spoken to her.
"An admirable goal," Effy agreed with a nod. She wasn't sure that could happen for everyone, but cheers to him.
He grinned. "Thanks," he said. "I try."
"Tryings half the battle," Effy remarked. After all, she was used to a more...apathetic group of people. She wasn't sure Sid could try for anything.
"Only half," Teon said, though he sounded optimistic. "Would rather do," he added, knowing it was better to succeed than simply try.
"Doesn't always happen that way though, does it mate?" Effy asked, taking a long drag and not intentionally trying to step all over his optimism. It was a byproduct, really, of her cynicism.
"Best to try," Teon said. Rather than nothing at all, at least. Then, he asked her, point-blank. "Do I help?"
"Well, in terms of mental quietness, you're top notch," Effy chuckled, giving him a small smile between drags.
'Course, the spliff didn't hurt either.
He grinned and folded his arms behind his head, relaxing. "Good." At least he could do that much. And he didn't even have to try.
