Post Graduation, Jay and Sirius decide to head out. Gifts are given and there's a whole lot of feelings flying around.
Jay had cried all through the ceremony. In fact, he'd hovered in the back of the audience specifically because he knew he was going to cry, and he always looked especially pathetic doing it.
Hopefully Sirius wouldn't be able to tell, though, because Jay'd had time to splash his face with cold water and generally straighten himself out. Internally he was still a mess, though, full of conflicting feelings that were rapidly pinging around and bouncing off of one another. He didn't want to rush Sirius right after graduation was over. He was more afraid than ever of seeming needy or smothering.
Sirius smiled when he eventually located Jay. "There you are, Sweets. Been wondering." He wrapped his arms around Jay's neck. "Tell me the truth, I look like a dork in this hat, right?"
"You look ridiculous," Jay admitted. "You're just too pretty for polyester. But I like it. You look like a cake topper. My little boy, all grown up." The joke was meant to cover up a very real tear, which he dabbed from the corner of his eye.
With an exaggerated pout, Sirius demanded to know "And what part of me exactly was ever little?"
Jay opened his mouth to make a comment, but found that he had none. "That's a good point."
"Except maybe my attention span." Sirius chuckled, arms still wrapped around the other boy's neck. "Wanna give me the first kiss of the life as a graduate?"
"With relish." Jay put his arms around Sirius and eased his body against him. Without further warning, he dipped him and kissed him enthusiastically, just like the famous photograph of the sailor and the nurse.
Laughing until their lips met, Sirius kissed him back with equal enthusiasm as his ridiculous graduation cap thingy fell to the ground.
Jay carefully set Sirius back on his feet. "Feel any different? You're a full fledged grownup now, and I'm just a lil' schoolboy, after all."
"Grown up?" Sirius crinkled his nose at the thought. "We're still the same age, remember. And no, no different. I'm just in a sillier outfit to usual. Not sure on this robes look, doesn't do it for me."
"Without the hat, you look like a singer in a gospel choir," Jay teased. "No, though. A lot has changed for you, now. I guess you just haven't thought about it or somethin'."
"Got a big summer ahead of us filming and what not, true." Sirius agreed, finally releasing his hold on the other boy. "And an end, in part, to sneaking around dorms and fumbling in single beds, I always hate that part." As he'd been very vocal about on a number of occasions.
"You've escaped high school. You can go anywhere. Do anything at all with your life." His heart was fluttering, and Jay had to take a moment to breathe. To ensure there would be no tremble in his voice. "Nothing is tying you down anymore."
"And I will, but nothing was tying me down before. If I don't wanna be somewhere, no one can make me stay." He knew Jay well enough to suspect Jay thought he was about to vanish. "But I'm buying a place in New York probably the one I showed you last week so you're not getting rid of me yet, sorry to disappoint."
"Well, it's not like you weren't going to finish high school. You have too much potential. I'm sure you'll be going to college somewhere soon," muttered Jay, in defense of his statement. "The point is...I guess I mean if you really plan on buying, maybe you should think whether New York is what you really want. James is in England. So's Oxford. Obviously."
"All of which is a decision to make in a year's time IF I even get in. I'm still doing exams, remember?" Because America summer holidays came sooner than English. "Besides, who knows what'll happen between now and a year's time."
"Yeah. Anything." The thought made his stomach churn with hope and fear.
Sirius, not wanting the day spoilt by serious conversation, promptly lean in and kissed Jay again. He could say things with his kisses that he couldn't put into words.
Message received. Shut up, Jay . He toyed with Sirius' hair, and when their lips parted he smiled. "So. Unless someone's got dibs, I'd like to buy you dinner."
"Called dibs?" He chuckled in amusement. "What am I? Your favourite toy?" His eyes were lit up and playful as he lent into the other boy.
"My very favorite one." Giving him a squeeze, Jay felt his smile grow. "C'mon, let's get you out of those silly clothes."
"Lead the way luv," he grinned, looping his finger in one of Jay's belt loops.
Jay bent over and picked up the fallen hat, and then they were away. "I'm all twitterpated; ceremonies make me sentimental."
"Nawww," Sirius cooed, grinning wide. "No need, you got more of me than you could want."
That wasn't quite true, though of course Jay realized that they easily spent enough time together for his taste. The 'more' he wanted was something intangible. "Not even. I took about five thousand pictures of you up there. I feel like a proud mama bear today."
"Who needs the paps when you're around?" Sirius teased as they startled walking together.
"You hate the photos I take. Because half of them are you with bedhead." Jay smiled introspectively and pushed his own hair off of his forehead.
"Hey, I'm all for using cameras in bed but you, you pick the wrong moments." Sirius joked back, grinning wickedly.
"Not so. I pick the ones I like best." Jay stretched and shook his wings. "I'm just an innocent country boy."
"Oh yeah?" Sirius leant in "Well, I remember where this innocent country boy's tongue was last night." He said, not caring who might hear.
Jay turned beet red. "Yeah, well...well...no one needs a photographic record of that."
"Au contraire, mon ami. I think I do." He wiggled his eyebrows playfully.
"Pervert." Jay leaned over and gave Sirius a quick peck right on the tip of his nose.
"You wouldn't have me any other way." Sirius said confidently.
Jay was suddenly brimming with emotion again, though he choked down on it hard. "You'd be someone else. I've never wanted to change you."
"Hey, hey, what's a matter Sweetness?" Sirius paused, stroking his cheek gently.
Jay touched the back of the other boy's hand. "Mm. Life just is bigger than we think of it most of the time. I guess I'm having a change of perspective today."
"Can I help?"
Jay brushed his fingers over Sirius' skin one more time. "Honestly? I don't think you can." The conflict broiling inside of Jay was between what he wanted from Sirius, and what Sirius wanted for himself. If he did anything to directly influence that, it wouldn't be a true or acceptable resolution.
Comprehension dawned and Sirius sighed "I'm sorry, Sweetness." He kissed him tenderly, feeling guilty.
Gently stroking the other boy's face, Jay managed a smile. "No sorries today. Today is your day."
"And I'm choosing to share it with you." That had to count for something, right?
"Which is why I plan to spoil you rotten. Not that you aren't already a spoiled brat."
A mock gasp, Sirius ask with wide eyes "Spoiled? Moi?"
"My mistake. Here, come on, let's dress you up nice and pretty," he said, stopping at Sirius' door.
"Oh yeah? Sounds fun." Sirius opened the door, grinning widely.
"Just don't take two hours trying on five different outfits," Jay teased as he followed him inside.
"It does not take two hours to try five outfits." Sirius immediately pointed out. "Aren't you gonna help with the undressing anyway?"
"It would be my great honor." Despite himself, it was hard to be entirely mopey around Sirius. The other boy just had this...infectious energy, and Jay was utterly captivated by it.
Sirius let him take control, watching him with an affectionate smile.
Jay already knew all of Sirius' clothes, but he was taking his time looking through them. "Man. I mean, I know your stuff is all really nice. But your stuff is all really nice. Are your undershirts designer?"
"Half that stuff was probably James' at some point." Sirius admitted, "but yes. I think so."
"Christ on a bike," Jay swore, shaking his head and laughing.
"I get freebies and stuff when I model, you know that..." He mumbled as an excuse. “And when I left home, got kicked out you know, James just shared everything he had.”
"Here," Jay said, tossing Sirius' favorite jeans at him. "It's just too bad I'm too short for your hand-me-downs."
"You'd look cute, you know you're always welcome to anything." Sirius told him immediately as he started dressing.
"Do you want to be shiny?" Jay asked, holding up and shaking a shirt that was covered in sparkles.
"Do you want me to be?" When Sirius had playfully suggested Jay help him undress, he hadn't expected the boy to pick his outfit too but he was having fun with it. It was kind of nice to not be the one making decisions, even little ones like this.
"No. It's sunshiney today--I could be blinded by a stray glare." Jay ruffled a bit longer, and tossed more clothes to Sirius, one by one--a tank top Jay suspected might have been made for a girl, a fluffy Italian scarf, and a soft jacket with military style fasteners.
Sirius chuckled, dressing quickly and then posing for Jay.
Jay gave him a maudlin smile. "You couldn't look bad if you tried."
"Sure I could." He bounced forward and wrapped his arms around Jay's neck. "You put me on a pedestal to much."
"Maybe you're right." Jay took Sirius' hand and, with the intimacy of familiarity, kissed him on the knuckles. "It's hard to explain."
Sirius shook his head fondly, he didn't get it at all. He was, at best, a privileged little tart. He'd been denying Jay the one thing he'd asked for for months now but Jay still stayed, still put him on that pedestal when he...did all the things he did. It just went further to reminding him that he really was trash.
Jay kissed him on the cheek. "You're just a big goofball, I know."
"And you're a hopeless romantic." Sirius said softly, leaning into Jay.
Jay wrapped his arms around the other boy, in a comfortable and familiar embrace. "Doesn't really fit together, does it?" he asked, murmuring against Sirius' forehead.
"I think we fit together just fine." Sirius diasgreed
"In an 'odd couple' sorta way, I think. Opposites attract?"
Sirius frowned a little and kissed Jay softly. "Nowt wrong with that." Jay seemed very fixated on their differences today though. More so than usual.
"It's pretty classic, indeed. So." Jay put a strong arm around Sirius' back and turned him toward the door. "What does the man of the hour want to eat?"
"I got us reservations at the tapas place, if that works for you?" It was a place they'd passed a lot on house hunts and the smells coming out that place made them swear each time they'd go soon.
"Perfect." Jay was beginning to sweat. He felt like he'd fumbled the day already. It should have been him, thinking about reservations. And they hadn't even come to the gift yet.
"Let's get a taxi," Sirius suggest, mostly because then they could both drink and Jay seriously needed help in loosening up.
"Good idea." Glad for an excuse to fidget, Jay took out his phone and set about looking for one. "Let's go out in the sun while we wait."
Sirius responded by scooping Jay into his arms bridal style and carrying him out as he spoke on the phone.
Jay had to apologize to the clerk for the squawk he made, and carefully maneuver his wings as they went through doorways.
Navigating carefully to save knees, elbows and wings from being knocked about, Sirius eventually got them down stairs and out of the door.
Jay finally wriggled out of his arms. "You didn't have to carry me the whole way, y"know."
"Maybe I wanted to." Sirius laughed, letting him go.
"Suit yourself. Your poor arms are going to be jelly tomorrow." Though Jay was lighter than he looked.
"Why, you planning to give me a proper work out later?" Sirius asked cheekily.
"That's beside the point." Jay reached his hand into his pocket, fiddling with the gift. Was now a good time?
"Ooo, so I am getting lucky later. Exciting." Sirius grinned, watching him curiously as he spoke.
Jay was really fumbling this. "Later, yeah. But, listen...since today's a special day an' all..."
Seeing he was struggling with whatever he was doing, Siri zipped his lips for once and just gave Jay the floor as it were.
"I figure, the givin' of gifts is customary." With a bashful pout firmly in place, Jay dug a pendant out of his pocket. "No wrapping paper. Save the earth." No, this was no good, he had to stop rambling. He held the gift out to be examined. It was a tall analog watch, two faces with delicate shining gears. On the back, timidly small in the right hand corner was engraved a feather. "With you makin' a new start...a new home an' all I figured..." Jay sucked in a breath. He was trying so hard not to make this about himself. "Look. Right now I set one for Xavier's, an' one for London. But you can have it however you like."
Sirius had watched silently, utterly touched. He hadn't expected anything from Jay so a gift at all was sweet, but one so thoughtful?
He launched himself at the other boy, wrapping his arms tight around him and kissing him hard. "You are the sweetest, you know that?"
Jay braced against the impact, but it was pure shock that pulled his wings in tightly against his back. He hadn't expected much of a positive response. "I try," he murmured, with bewildered sincerity, as he stroked Sirius' cheek.
The Potters hadn't been able to come for many reasons, chief being it was James' last day of Harrow too. They'd have a family dinner to celebrate both boys later in the week, still it felt pathetic to voice the thought in his head at the moment. He hadn't expected anything from anyone today. Hadn't even expected anyone to come to the graduation ceremony just for him.
"You didn't have to buy my anything, you know." Sirius told him instead and kissed him lightly again. "But I love that you did, it's so sweet. Just like you."
"It's customary," Jay repeated. Sirius hadn't really had anyone else in the crowd, either. So unless there was some kind of wave of fan mail, it didn't seem like he'd have any other gifts today.
"For, like, family maybe but you didn't have to." He stroked Jay's cheek tenderly. "It means a lot, that's all." He then pulled back, maybe a touch reluctantly, so that he could put the watch on.
Jay held onto him by a belt loop, though he gave him space to pull back. "I like to think we're...close. So I'm happy to, and you're welcome. I'm glad you like it."
Sirius took the maintained contact as an invited to lean into the other boy as he put the watch on. "I'm a lucky boy to have you putting up with me."
Part of Jay had begun to try that same sentiment on for size. "I'm just happy..to have had this chance to be around you."
"I'll spoil you as soon as we get to London, I'll be your Aladdin showing you a whole new world." Sirius promised, after admiring his new watch he wrapped his arms around Jay's neck again.
"Shouldn't I be Aladdin? Since I can fly you around." He smiled, though. He liked the sentiment. Maybe Sirius would remember it. Maybe things would turn out.
"Well then that would make me your Princess, wouldn't it?" Sirius chuckled, he was a bit of a spoilt princess and he knew it.
A princess, maybe. Not Jay's. Not really. "You play the part very well. Maybe I should have gotten you a tiara."
"I think I have one somewhere," Sirius laughed, he could hear car coming now. Hopefully it would be their taxi.
"Will you try it on for me tonight?" Jay teased. He took this last opportunity to cop a feel, before the taxi whisked them away to the outside world and propriety.
"If you play your cards right, I'll only wear the tiara for you." Sirius murmured in his ear and then pulled away, hoping into the cab.
"I promise to take lots of pictures," Jay teased, climbing in after him.
Jay had cried all through the ceremony. In fact, he'd hovered in the back of the audience specifically because he knew he was going to cry, and he always looked especially pathetic doing it.
