After Becky's party Sirius gives her a present for her birthday. And the truth. And the good ship Sirius/James Potter sinks for good.

Becky twisted to crack her back as she shoved the left-over birthday cookies into a plastic bag for people to snack on tomorrow. She was a little surprised that her series of gingerbread victims hadn't been more popular - maybe they just couldn't appreciate the creativity.

Still, way more people had come than she was expecting! Even if they hadn't all wanted to stay to watch a movie, it was super nice of them to come by and wish her a happy birthday! It was probably the best sweet sixteen she could have asked for.

"Looks like I missed a good time." Sirius commented as he came in. "Sorry, duty called or I would have popped my head round the door sooner." He told her as he came over.

Becky squeaked as she spun around before breaking out into a huge grin. It seemed like forever since she saw him last! "Sirius! Hi! Don't worry about it - I'm sure you're super busy being famous and all that." She thrust the bag of cookies at him. "Want one? There's only vampire and zombie victims left, but they're very tasty!"

"Sure, thanks," With a smile he accepted the biscuit. "Got time to chat? I have a birthday present too but I want a word with you first."

Laughing, Becky leaned a hip against the counter. "Does that count as a bribe? Sure, what's up?"

"I just have a little confession and I think you might be a little cross but if you hear me out you might get why I did it." He told her as he slipped onto a stool, popping her birthday gift on the counter next to him.

Sobering, Becky moved to sit on the stool next to him. "Okay?"

"I have been let down by a lot of people who were friends. Some sold me out to press, others just said or posted the wrong thing not meaning to but still, I think you get my point. Quite a few kids here have seen the show and gotten excited but when I saw how vocal and, well, prolific you are in fandom and social media it concerned me. And I protected myself, maybe unfairly. Well, no, totally unfairly but I protected myself by not telling you the truth so you couldn't accidentally share it. I guess you could say I have trust issues." He snapped the arm off his gingerbread and took a bite.

Becky bit her lower lip and tapped her index finger against the counter. "You... you lied to me?" She tilted her head down to stare at the counter and curled inward on herself, shying away from him. "Even after I promised not to post anything?" She glanced upwards, eyes startled. "I didn't, you know, you can check. I keep my promises."

"I had just met you and I had to make a choice. I didn't want to take a risk and get screwed." Sirius explained honestly with a small shrug. "And you have been eavesdropping on me in private moments, well moment, anyway I was worried and did something to protect myself but I wanted to tell you, make it right."

Becky considered that for a moment before squinting up at Sirius with a shy smile. "Because you know you can trust me now?"

"There you go, so in case you hadn't put it together, me and James. We've never been more than brothers." Sirius explained, tucking his hair back behind his ear.

Becky's face froze in a twisted, slightly manic grin while her brain struggled to process that information. The problem was that it just... wouldn't... compute. She blinked four times in quick succession before stopping blinking at all. It didn't make sense. They had matching tattoos. They finished each other's sentences. They were like the most adorable together, as proven by many a gifset. And Sirius said on the phone - though, no, he did say that he'd lied. Okay, but there were still those other things. Still not blinking, Becky slowly tilted her head to the left. "Sorry, what?"

"He's my best mate and I love him. James is my adopted brother, literally, but that's all. But obviously you have a lot of questions and I'll do my best to answer them all for you." He promised before asking with a deliberately charming smile/ "Am I in trouble, birthday girl?"

She opened and closed her mouth a couple times, eventually squeaking, "But, tattoo?" Which was quickly followed by, "Are you sure?"

"Brothers." He repeated simply. "He is one of the most important people in my life but that doesn't always mean sex and stuff." Their relationship was complicated and much of it he was unlikely to admit to or talk about in public but it was still fraternal in nature for the most part. "And I'm sure. We snogged a few times when we heard one of my parents were about to walk in to upset them but nothing more than that."

Well, that put paid to her theory that they just needed to try it out. She chewed on her lower lip and twisted her hands - it was like her entire perception of him had to change! He wasn't this torn romantic hero! He was just... what was he? "But, why did you think it would be better for me to believe you were together? Instead of single?" Her eyes widened in horrific realization. "Oh gods, I totally hurt Jay when I told him you were dating James! He was crushed!"

Which is why you shouldn't have meddled He thought, perhaps uncharitably. "Like I said, I figured it was easier to let you believe a lie than risk truth with someone I didn't know or trust at the time. And one time I caught you spying on me, your scent gave you away, so I switched to shit talking. We have this code see to warn when someone is listening in."

Becky sputtered in indignation. "I wasn't spying! I was trying to find you to give you your present! And you sounded super intense so I didn't want to interrupt!"

"Ok, ok," He said quickly, hands up in surrender. "Well, I was drunk and talking about very personal things so I panicked and covered with something I knew would distract you."

A little hurt still at the accusation, Becky nodded. "Okay, I just- okay. I think I understand. I think-" she took a deep breath. She closed her eyes and held up a finger to signal him to wait. She was hurt he'd lied, yeah, but part of being such a prolific writer was being able to approach things from multiple POVs. If he had been betrayed before, then it made sense that he maybe was wary. And while she thought that they had been tight from the start... she maybe was being too optimistic?

She slowly let her breath out and resolved to take this confession as a positive sign of the progress of their relationship. That she hadn't known their relationship needed that much progress was ultimately irrelevant. "Alright. I think I get it. I'm good. Are we good?"

"I hope so...you're not about to hit me, are you?" He was relieved if not a little surprised she'd taken it so well. "And like I said if you have questions, like about the truth and stuff."

Becky let out a strangled laugh and hid her face in her hands. "No hitting, promise," she mumbled. At least she didn't think she would. When she got angry, it was usually a sharp flash that led to long, lingering resentment. And she was too confused to really have any bright moment of rage. "Just, can you promise me something?"

"What's that, luv?"

She looked him straight in the eye for this, squinting to convey her seriousness. "Don't lie to me, okay? Don't tell me if you don't want me to know - and I'll probably make something up, it's what I do, but I don't want to think you're lying to me all the time. 'Cause that'll drive me crazy."

Sirius nodded "The same promise I made Jay, actually: I don't tell everything but what I do tell is true. Works for me."

Becky offered up a small, hesitant smile. "It seems like a good policy to have in general, unless you're really MI6 or something."

"Nah," He chuckled at that. "I'd be a terrible spy: too easily distracted by pretty or shiny things."

She giggled and raised her eyebrows. "Like... Jay?"

Sirius smiled at that "He is very pretty."

And that smile made something dark twist inside Becky. Because it was a great smile, the kind of smile Becky wanted Sirius to give when talking about someone he loved... he just wasn't talking about the person she thought he loved. Should have loved? No, Becky told herself firmly, there's no should in love. She just had to... get over it. Even if she thinks that Sirius and James would be super cute together. She just needed to remember her mantra: people are not stories. But even if they were! Becky herself knew from personal experience that sometimes your characters just don't want to follow the plot. It's how she'd ended up with 35k of Sam/Benny that one time.

Jay could totally be Benny. Everyone loves Benny, even if he isn't Dean (or depending on your preferences, Castiel). Becky beamed at herself for making the connection, and then turned it towards Sirius. "He really is! Especially those gorgeous wings. Did I tell you he offered to fly me around?"

"Oh really? It's fun, you'll enjoy it." Sirius nodded with a smile. "And they are rather gorgeous, not quite so when you keep finding the feathers in your bed however..."

"Could be worse," Becky quipped, a little relieved now that she knew Jay really was stronger than he looked if he could lift Sirius. "You could be allergic to down."

"True, or he to dogs." he agreed with a chuckle.

"So..." Becky looked down and to the right, all innocence. "Are the two of you, you know-" she paused, then mentally cursed Sirius' name. Now she had to come up with different phrasing, "um, in it for the long haul?"

"Nothing serious," Because he was willing to go there even if she wasn't. It was half the fun of his name, the endless puns and whatnot. "We're not exclusive." But things were shifting between them, it just wasn't news he'd choose Becky to be the first to hear though.

Poor Jay. He really had it bad for Sirius, and it sounded like Sirius was going to break his heart. "Well, that doesn't mean you can treat him like any less than diamonds," Becky warned him, "he's good people."

"You think I'd treat him badly?" Sirius shot her a look that was clearly hurt by the assumption. "He's the first person to want to actually go one a date with me not use a date for publicity or bearding or whatever. I know how special he is."

"Not intentionally, but..." Becky shrugged with a somewhat apologetic smile. She wasn't sure if this was a secret - she didn't think it was - so she continued, "I think he might be really into you. Like, really."

"Becky, you're heading into private territory right now." Because, yes, he knew completely funnily enough and it wasn't something he'd talk about with anyonebut Jay and that was painful enough.

She sighed. "Yeah okay."  She just knew how much it sucked to like someone more than they like you. Actually, "I'm probably just dumping all my relationship baggage on you guys, sorry."

"I have enough baggage without extras, ta." Sirius told her. "We're happy enough how things are, ok? No stories, no dramas. And I plan to spoil him on his birthday, just like I've gotten you a little something too." He was still holding a wrapped gift after all.

Becky nodded, her eyes zeroing in on the gift. It was an obvious ploy, but she'd allow it, because, "Present?"

"For the birthday girl." He nodded, holding the giftwrapped box for her. The paper was lilac with a large Padfoot paw print on the top.

Becky giggled as she briefly placed her palm over the paw print. "Your dog form is pretty awesome at wrapping things," she joked as she carefully peeled off the tape. All joking was put aside, however, as she opened the box to see the most gorgeous shoes ever. "O. M. G. OMG!" She grabbed one of the shoes and clasped it to her chest. "These are beautiful! I reblogged a design like this a while ago, but these are so much cooler!!" She leaned down to start tugging the shoe on over her bare foot. "Oh, they fit awesome, too! And I've been needing new shoes, how'd you know?" She held the one foot out to admire it.

"I followed you back on tumblr didn't I? And you reblogged these ones a while back so I took it as a hint." And he'd played detective to get size, not difficult since he and Effy got along well enough to give him access to the room when Becky wasn't around.

"Oh man oh man!" Becky squealed and gave him a quick but tight hug. "Sooooo awesome!" She grabbed the other shoe out of the box and saw that it had been hiding a little pouch. "There's more?" After pulling on the other shoe but not bothering to lace it just yet, Becky picked up the pouch.

"You're really too nice to me, Sirius." She had a soft grin as she said it though, and it didn't stop her from reaching into the bag and pulling out a necklace. "Wooooow," she breathed out. "It's so pretty! And it's one of my favorite quotes of yours!" She pulled it over her head and stepped back, stretching her arms out wide. "How do I look?"

"Very good. Suits you." Sirius grinned and nodded "And happy birthday." Maybe he was buttering her up a little after bad news but it was genuinely good to see her pleased too.

Giggling and clapping her hands together, Becky squeed, "I can't wait to show Yana! Oh!" She pulled out another necklace that had fallen under her shirt. "The shoes totally match the necklace Yana got for me! I'm going to be the most styling, possession-free person around!"

"You're enough of a handful without adding demons into the mix," Sirius winked and then added "If you want to talk about the other stuff I told you or anything else, anytime ok?"

Oh right, that. Becky tugged on her new necklaces. "Yeah, okay. Um, you're happy, right? You, and Jay and James, too, right?" She shrugged. "'Cause, like, your angst made an interesting story but... fluff is good, too?" Especially for people she actually knew.

"I'm happy enough, sure." Sirius nodded with a smile. "Everyone has problems but I've got good friends and I'm moving on. I'm pretty sure the boys are happy too."

She nodded, happy with that answer as she could be after Sirius' bombshell. "Okay, then. Um," Becky reached down to pull off the shoes, not wanting to get them gross yet, "can I hug you again?"

"So long as you resist groping the merchandise," He winked.

"Aw, man, take all the fun out of it," Becky said even as she reached under his arms to give him a quick squeeze. "Thanks for letting me in. And for the gifts, of course!"

"I guess I gave you more than I meant to, huh?" He chuckled and looked around, looked like tidying was nearly done. "Got post party plans?"

"I still have to call my parents." In fact, Becky pulled out her phone to check the time. Her dad was probably heading to bed soon. "I think my mom might be guilty we weren't together for my birthday, but I'll see them plenty over spring break."

"Ah," He nodded in understanding "I'll let you be then, darlin'."

"Sorry... oh!" Becky turned around and grabbed the bag of cookies, "Want any for the road? For some reason people didn't want the beheaded ones."

"Not going to poison me, are you?" He joked back.

She shook her head. "Not unless you react badly to holy water."

Becky hadn't actually put any of her stash of holy water in the cookies. She'd put a drop in a pitcher of lemonade earlier in the year, after all, and no one had reacted.

"Best not find out, eh?" He winked playfully.

Becky rolled her eyes at him and opened the bag. "Just... take a couple or I'll end up eating them all." And she couldn't eat them without remembering the backstory she'd created for them. It was very emotionally trying. "Take some to Jay or something," she added with a smirk.

He accepted a few, telling her "If my manager asks who got me addicted I'm pointing at you."

Becky laughed. "I'll take all the blame for ruining your career with cookies."

"A confession! Can't take it back now." He warned as he got up. "Enjoy your prezzies."

"Will do! Seriously, these shoes are a life-saver," Becky trailed off as she opened her contacts folder to pull up her house's number.

Siri waved and headed off, planning to go looking for someone to share the biscuits with. If that someone happened to be a Guthrie, well, that was just a coincidence.
