Jay and Victor chat at the double birthday party.
warning- if you haven't seen The Hobbit- Battle of the Five Armies or read the books then there is a character death spoiler
Returning from a snacks run, Victor rejoined the gang watching Sirius's movies, currently the last instalment of The Hobbit, and settled between Jay and Megan. Handing the promised pixie sticks to Megan (how had she never heard of them?? What was wrong with English candy?) and holding of the bowl of fresh, warm popcorn to Jay as he did so. A few others had brought back supplies too and drinks cans were being passed around whilst onscreen Thorin was yelling about...something.
All Jay really knew about the Lord of the Rings was that Led Zeppelin had liked it, but thus movie had cool costumes and a dragon, plus with the company it was a pleasant afternoon--though he was beginning to think that giving the new girl a sugar rush wasn't the best idea. Jay wasn't really hungry, but he took a few pieces of popcorn anyway out of politeness. And put his arm over Vic's shoulder.
An action Victor thought nothing of, it was just a friendly gesture after all.
"Maybe the next one'll be something you know," he suggested as he grabbed two of the doctor peppers being passed around and gave one to Jay. "Sirius said he'd got a mix of things."
"It's fine. I'll try to stop asking questions." He scritched the back of Victor's neck reassuringly.
"It's the third part in a trilogy that you don't know, I can't blame you for questions!" Victor pointed out with a grin, the warmth on his neck as a welcome addition.
"Yeah, but I keep interrupting."
"And I told you I don't mind. I saw it in the cinema anyway." He cracked open the can and glanced behind then, Sirius was animatedly chatting and goofing off with some other students and completely unphased by Jay's arm around Victor. Good, he knew it was meaningless too. Victor wasn't fussed about gossips, only what his friend thought.
Jay noticed the glance, and it made him look over his shoulder, too, withdrawing his arm. "You musta really liked it, then."
Victor shrugged "It an ok adaptation and, spoilers, I'm probably gonna pretend to not be tearing up later, but it wasn't me who picked today's playlist. Not that I'm complaining, of course." He couldn't help the look of confusion at the arm being pulled away.
"Hey. It's your party and you can cry if you want to," Jay joked. He took one last glance at Sirius before settling in again, hands in his lap.
Dropping his voice lower, Vic asked "Something wrong?"
"Huh? No." He didn't want Victor to worry. "If you don't count how I ate myself stupid earlier."
"Doctor Pepper will cure all food babies woes, don't you worry." Victor smiled, playing along for the moment.
His attention was torn away for a moment some of the others goofing off with candy and laughing loudly. He wasn't sure what had just happened but suspected Megan and the pixie sticks to be the cause.
"Or make it worse," Jay chuckled. He rearranged his wings, missing the days when he could sit on a couch comfortably.
"Eh, that's the risk you gotta take." Victor was leaning in a little, as deference to the others the heating wasn't turned up as high as he would have liked and Jay was the nearest willing heat source.
Naturally accommodating, Jay put his arm back around him without thinking. "And I'm unquestionably adventurous." He took a sip of his soda.
"Lucky Sirius!" Was immediately joked back
Jay turned bright, hot red. "Shush, you," he muttered, embarassed.
"What? I'm only playing!" Besides they were whispering while on screen things were getting tense. No way was anyone listening to them.
Jay scratched a spot behind his ear. " 'M embarrassed," he laughed.
"It's just me, what's that to be embarrassed about?" Victor reasoned though if Jay was genuinely uncomfortable he already knew he wouldn't push further
"Nothing, nothing. Don't worry about it. I blush too easy." He squeezed Vic's shoulder apologetically.
"Perks of being green, no one knows when you're blushing." Exaggeration of course, his friends had figured out but still.
"That's why you're so brazen. I bet if I tried to be in a play, I'd be beet red the whole time, too. Bet the whole green thing helps there."
"I used to blush and mumble anytime I talked about stuff like that...well, when I really really like a guy sometimes I still do." Victor admitted
"Aww, cute little Vicky." Jay poked him in the side.
"Urgh! Don't call me that!" Ticklish Vic squirmed to get away hastily "Oops, sorry Megan!"
"Oops!" Said the slender girl. She had been totally engrossed in the movie until just then. "It's ok, thanks; you reminded me I want more cake." She bounced up and away.
Jay watched her go. "I'm pretty sure she's literally made of sugar, spice, and everything nice."
"Better than what some of the kids round here are made of." Victor pointed out with a smile and shrug.
"Yeah, like you," Jay teased, giving him another pinch on the side. "But at least you won't give me cavities."
"Hey, is this pick on Victor day?" The birthday boy pouted as he batted the hand away.
"Yep," answered Jay, cheerfully. "That's a Guthrie birthday tradition."
"And since when am I a Guthrie?" Was snorted back.
"Doesn't matter if the teasee is. Just the teaser. But I can get you an official membership card made up if you're interested."
"There's probably enough of you Guthries already, thanks," Victor muttered back quickly before falling quiet. Thing were about to get serious onscreen. And even when you knew it was going to happen, favourites dying wasn't fun.
Hoping the silence didn't mean he'd done something wrong, Jay followed Victor's cue, settling in and turning his focus back to the screen.
Fili's death still made him wince, the other characters reactions to it even more so. "What kind of birthday treat is this, Black?" He sighed louder than anything he'd said to Jay, causing snickers that broke the sudden silence that had fallen in the group.
"Ah you love it, birthday boy! I got all the dramatic shit for you, we should do Hunger Games next."
"Those, I've seen," said Jay brightly. He was looking forward to a movie he'd understand, though this one was admittedly enjoyable in visuals and action, if nothing else.
Leaning down, Sirius murmured playfully in his ear. "I love to please you, babe."
Jay stiffened nervously. But he couldn't help but almost immediately melted. "You treat me so good." He gave Sirius a kiss.
When Sirius sat back, Victor was grinning. "It's good to see you both so happy." He told Jay under the noise of battle scenes.
"Thanks. Sorry to get all pda in front of you." But he was glowingly happy that Sirius had shown him such affection. It was a gesture that a significant other might make--casual and open fondness.
Victor waved a hand nonchalantly "Sorry for what? No way, all we gotta do now is find someone stupid enough to date me and we can double."
"Anyone would be lucky. You're a sweetheart." Jay gave him a much gentler squeeze.
"You're just biased."
"Maybe. But how'd I get biased? It's 'cause you were a little sweetheart to me."
"Pietro used to call me sweetheart." He recalled suddenly, eyes darting to his old room-mate. "I hated it at first."
"Why? It's a compliment." Jay idly wondered where in the country each of his two friends came from. If Victor was a yank, and Pietro was raised south of the mason dixon, maybe that explained the disconnect. In the south, people were rather free with affectionate nicknames. Jay was used to being called 'hon' in the grocery checkout line.
"Coz I was thirteen and the baby of the whole school! All the boys were like two, three years older and I thought he was being patronising. I eventually learned he wasn't." It felt like another time, another life thinking about way back when.
"Ah. Makes sense." Being one of the oldest Guthries, Jay hadn't experienced much of that himself. But he had seen it in his younger siblings.
"I like it now but now I don't really get called it anymore, way of the world right?" Maybe he was just feeling suddenly nostalgic for a moment but it would pass. He was better off and happier in a lot of ways now after all.
"Careful what you wish for and all that," Jay said, nodding along sagely.
"Yeaaah, I know. I'm happy as is anyway."
"Well, good. I'm happy to hear it."
"Mmm," Victor was leaning into the warmth again now the tickling and poke had ceased. "Happy birthday to me!"
"Indeed. Are you having a good one so far?"
"So far so good," Was confirmed with a nod.
"Hmm. That's a little lukewarm. We're going to have to do something about that."
"Hey, better than last year and that's the main thing." Victor shrugged with a smile. "And it's only up from here, right?"
"No way. It has to be completely outstanding first so that if my present flops too bad, at least it was still an amazing day. What do you need--more sugar? Some gross purple skittles?"
"You spoil me,"The birthday boy accused, grinning. "Wouldn't say no to either of those."
"Coming right up." Jay exited over the back of the couch in search of snacks. And he only lingered for a few moments with Sirius before heading back to Victor with popcorn and candy, too.
