Lu and Cindy discuss the quality of guys at the party and decide how to divide them up.
"Are you sure everyone's invited to this?" Lu asked Cindy doubtfully as they headed down the hall to the rec room. "I mean, I'm really going to feel like an idiot if it turns out it was a private party.
It wasn't exactly that she doubted Cindy having seen the invitation on the journals; she had to admit, only one of her had really checked them for the past week or so, and she was being strangely noncommittal on the subject. On the other hand, it seemed rude just to crash a birthday party without any gift, especially since she wasn't altogether sure just who's birthday party they were crashing.
“I’m sure,” Cindy answered with a unconcern that suggested she’d still be going to the party even if she wasn’t sure. “And I know Cal. You can be my plus one if that makes you feel better.” She smiled at Lu and lightly bumped shoulders since her hands full with two neatly wrapped and tied with ribbon gifts.
"Hold it, it's Cal's?" Lu asked. She paused and turned towards Cindy, her face warming. "I'm not sure this is a good idea," she observed, despite an internal protestation that it most definitely was, and a surprising lack of any complaint to the contrary.
“Why not?” Cindy stopped walking to give Lu the chance to turn them around should she want. She balanced the gifts in one hand, reaching out to take Lu’s hand and give it a squeeze. “What happened?”
"Oh, nothing major," Lu admitted, grinning a little. "He mimicked me. The results were...unexpected?" Her cheeks warmed a little more and she shrugged, and she gave Cindy's hand a squeeze before releasing it. "I'm pretty sure he's over it by now, though, and I should be, so it's no big deal. Anyway, what have you been up to?"
“Oh, the usual,” Cindy replied with a shrug. “School, partying,” she grinned at Lu, “being fabulous. I’ve been working on a few new sketches. Just some rough ideas, nothing fully fleshed out yet.”
Cindy looked over at Lu, “So, how were the results unexpected?”
Lu rolled her eyes and grinned. "There's no way I'm getting out of this without telling you, is there? Not even if I ask to see the new sketches?" Which she wanted to, actually. She could use some new shoes, and Cindy designed the best.
Shaking her head, Cindy started walking again, “If you don’t want to talk about it, you don’t have to. Either way, I’ll show you the sketches.” She could hear the sounds of the party now, talking and laughing, music playing.
Lu sighed. "It's not a big deal, I guess. Cal mimicked my mutation. One of me decided that triggering his split by making out with him would be 'fun'." She smiled crookedly. "Gotta admit, she was right."
Cindy laughed, “Now, that’s my idea of really using your mutation.” She walked into the party and headed for a table laden with presents. Her own joined the wrapped packages and bags already piled there. She’d gotten them both an iPad. She didn’t know Cal’s friend well, she didn’t even know Cal all that well, but she figured who didn’t want an iPad? “He is cute.” She glanced in Cal’s direction.
Lu followed her gaze towards where Cal was standing, and grinned and blushed. "He is," she admitted, then leaned in to confide in a whisper. "Which is maybe why I didn't protest when one of each of us took off for a while?"
“Maybe,” Cindy agreed with a laugh, her smile teasing. “It is a good reason. Drink?” She indicated the drink table and then started toward it. “So, does that mean Chuck is out of the picture? Or are you two still dating?”
Lu shook her head as she followed Cindy over to the table and picked up a glass. "His internship ended in July and he went back to Seattle. Neither of us really wanted to do the long-distance thing, y'know?" She smiled crookedly, making a 'what can you do?' gesture, then took a sip. "Anyway, only two of me were dating him - and the third was pretty vocal about her objections. I'm not sure if it would've worked out. What about you, still with Eric? Or pretending to be, anyway?"
Cindy picked up a glass as well, tilting the cup to look at the contents. Fruit punch, of course. The official drink of the pre-teen and teenage party. She took a sip. “I’m still with Eric,” she replied. “We don’t see each other as often though.” Which was no loss really. She saw him just enough to keep her image well maintained and that’s all she needed.
"I can tell you're devastated about that," Lu offered with a grin. As far as she was concerned, it was no loss; she'd never been able to figure out what Cindy saw in him anyway.
“It’s not the first time we’ve had to do long distance,” Cindy answered with a small shrug and then took another sip.
Recognizing that as a dismissal of the subject, Lu took a sip of her drink and looked around. "So, anyone around here grab your interest yet?"
Cindy’s answering look and smirk said ‘What do you think?’ “The school is so full of pretty I don’t know where to start.” She arched an eyebrow at Lu, smirk playful. “Recommendations?”
Lu laughed and grinned mischievously. "Like you need any from me? I know you better than that." She took another sip and added, "Now, if you want to be nice and offer any, I'd appreciate it..."
“Sorry, there was a reason why I was asking,” Cindy replied, her lips twisting with an apologetic frown. “I don’t have any. Everyone seems to be taken.”
"No, there's..." Lu frowned and considered it for a moment. "Well, Cal. I don't think he's dating anyone." She blushed a little and admitted, "It didn't come up. Anyway, Dick isn't, I'm pretty sure, and I think I heard that his roommate's available too. Jamie was definitely flirting with one of me - it was mutual," she confessed, "so I'm guessing he's not? And Daryl, though I'm not sure how old he actually is. Oh, and Irvine," she added, gesturing across the room to point him out and smiled fondly. "He's pretty cute. I danced with him at the Halloween party - he was dressed as a gangster." She shrugged and grinned. "I haven't sorted out the younger guys, and I'm not sure about a couple of the TA's, though I think I heard that Brian Braddock is dating the gym TA?"
Cindy’s smile was teasing, “See? You do have recommendations.”
Lu blushed a little, but grinned. "Hey, there's three of me. I get to meet everyone faster." She shrugged. "Anyway, they're not really recommendations. Just...observations?"
“This person is hot is always a recommendation,” Cindy replied with a smirk and then took a sip of her drink, looking out on the party. “And this school certainly isn’t short on pretty.” The school wasn’t short on a lot of things. For beings mutants being such a small portion of the population, a lot of them were famous, highly talented, geniuses, or some combination of the three.
"Mmm, no argument there," Lu said, following Cindy's gaze out at the party guests. And grinned, because yes, pretty was a definite thing. "The big question is, how do we divide them up?"
“Between us?” Cindy smirked. “Easily. Half now, half later.” She gave the birthday boy a wave.
Lu laughed. "We'd better get started, then." She finished off her drink and set it down. Granted, she doubted it'd be quite that easy - for her, if not Cindy, because she didn't really doubt Cindy could manage it. But she had no objection at all to trying.
Cindy linked arms with Lu and grinned at her, “Then let’s get started.” She picked a face out of the crowd and headed over to say hello.
