Noriko talks to Vance about JVX and going for a training sim in the Danger Room.
Noriko had wanted to give Vance a few weeks to acclimate, before she really got started on talking to him about JVX. But she had no doubt that she wanted him on board, if he was open to the idea. Time to test the waters, and she headed over to his room and knocked on his door, hoping he'd be in.
Vance had, in fact, just gotten back from the gym. Hair damp and spiky from his shower, he finished pulling on a fresh t-shirt, and then opened the door. "Hey, Noriko," he said with a smile.
"Hey," she greeted him, and raised her eyebrows questioningly. "Good time to bug you?"
"Of course, yeah, come on in." He stepped back, to give her some room. "How's it going?"
"Alright," she confirmed, taking in the new digs. And the super expensive stuff that was clearly not his. "You?"
Vance smiled again. "I'm okay so far. Y'know. Just getting used to everything." She'd seen him, while he was inside. She'd understand the transition.
"I bet," Noriko agreed, and leaned back against the edge of his desk. More than just having seen him inside, she remembered how she'd had to transition herself, when she'd come here. And the streets weren't jail. "How's that going?"
"It's alright. Just...getting used to all the freedom, you know?" Sometimes, it felt more scary than beneficial, though he knew that was just him being ridiculous.
"You set yourself a strict schedule?" she asked curiously, wondering what coping mechanisms he was going for.
He nodded. "Yeah. But, I mean, I left blocks of time in there, too. I need to get used to it again."
"At least Illyana doesn't strike me as someone who'd stick with a strict anything," Noriko offered. That was bound to help.
Vance chuckled. "Definitely not. Which is good. What've you been up to, Noriko?"
"The usual," she replied, which wasn't surprising. "Classes, squad stuff, JVX stuff - you know. And extra training with my roommate - she's something else. Abby?" She wasn't sure he'd met her.
"Don't think I've met her," Vance said. "But she's got the green hair, right?"
"That's the one," Noriko confirmed. "It's demanding, but hopefully worth it. You been back in the Danger Room?"
He shook his head 'no.' "I've been practicing, but.....not there. Not like that." It wasn't that he didn't want to, but finding volunteers was something that daunted him. After all who in their right mind would want to practice with him? Well, aside from Steve, but....that was Steve. "What kind of stuff is your roommate training you on?"
"Hand to hand," Noriko replied, the usual answer she gave. If Abby taught her other stuff, it was between the two of them. "Wanna? The Danger Room, I mean."
"You would want to do that? With me?" He asked, sounding surprised.
"Not too early to ask?" Noriko checked, with raised eyebrows. It was an answer in and of itself, but she even elaborated. "I've been sitting on my hands forcing myself not to ask just yet."
"Really?" He couldn't quite wrap his head around that. "Why?"
"The whole transition thing?" Noriko offered. "And you said you needed to think about it."
"Oh, I meant...why would you want to practice with me?"
"I've wanted you on JVX ever since I got that ball rolling," Noriko answered simply. She wasn't going to equivocate.
Vance was....shocked. Flattered, thrilled, but legitimately shocked. "Really? That's....me? Uh, wow."
"Assuming you're interested," Noriko confirmed, but she wasn't making that a question for now. Not unless he wanted to answer it already.
He was. It was like superhero training, which was pretty much the coolest thing ever. Still, he wasn't entirely convinced it was the best idea, either, given....everything. "Well, I mean, what would it involve?"
Noriko wondered whether it really was best to have that conversation now, but why not. "A lot of commitment, and training," she answered, pulling her phone out of her pocket and bringing her schedule up on the 3D display. She quickly took out everything that wasn't tagged JVX, so that he could see what kind of "a lot" she was talking about. "There. That's this month."
Vance looked it over. "Seems like a pretty big time investment. Not, I mean, not that it shouldn't be. That makes perfect sense. Who, uh, who all is doing it?"
Noriko pulled up the list of current participants. "Not that you have to say yay or nay now." Far from it. "I just wanted to start training with you again."
"Oh, I wasn't...of course I couldn't, shouldn't, do it now. I was just...curious," Vance said quickly. "Uh....training-wise, I mean...only if you're sure. Given everything."
Noriko gestured at the list as if to say, there's my certainty. "Why shouldn't I be sure?" It was, actually, a real question.
He'd thought that part was kind of obvious. "Because I lost control of my mutation, and I killed somebody?"
Vance knew Noriko understood better than most, and that she had his back, absolutely. That didn't mean, though, that she necessary wanted to put herself, or anyone on JVX, in harm's way.
"So did I," Noriko retorted evenly, putting her phone back in her pocket, "or close enough." She'd told him before, and she'd been glad he hadn't asked for details then. It was still not something she liked talking about, for all that she had mercilessly gone over it in therapy.
He smiled a little in understanding. "So you trust me anyway, is what you're saying."
"Something like that," she confirmed, although the quirk of her lips said that it was pretty much exactly that.
"Let's do it, then," Vance decided, smile widening. "The more I train, the better."
"Free now?" Noriko shrugged a little. "No time like the present."
"Sure, if you don't mind waiting for me to change," Vance said. He'd just finished putting on regular clothes, after all - he'd need to switch back. Ruining the few pairs of jeans he had that (almost) fit would be dumb. "Danger gym?"
Noriko nodded as she headed for the door. "We call it the Danger Room now. I don't really know why we changed. I'll see you there in five?"
He nodded quickly, excited. "Definitely. Be right down."
