Karolina and Xavin meet.
It didn't matter how cold the television network said it got outside, or how much the sun decided to hide away, Xavin had decided that the outside of the school was one of hir favourite places. Hir mutant powers were useful in a sense that way, too, because that dropping temperature did not have the slightest affect on hir that way; a small pair of black spandex running shorts and a matching sports bra was all ze needed. Then again, the least amount of clothes ze had on was better when Xavin was playing with fire.
Which was another reason why Xavin preferred outside. Everything inside was a damage risk and it was frustrating! How was ze supposed to get better at using these powers when there was only one place inside ze could really use them--and that place had to be shared (definitely a bad idea) and constantly supervised?
So outside it was. Xavin stood in the middle of the basketball court, on the concrete, with flames reaching up to hir knees and elbows. Ze was focused on controlling how far they consumed hir limbs and how hot they burned. Every once and awhile Xavin would release a burst into the air when it got to be too much, sometimes making a design, if ze could manage it. Fascinating.
At Xavier’s, a ball of fire shooting up into the air was normal. Karolina, however, was still adjusting to life here and the sight of a stream of fire bursting skyward had her flight quickly redirecting as she back-pedaled in surprise. Curiosity quickly followed, as did an eagerness to meet another one of her fellow students, and Karolina flew towards it. She slowed as she spotted a figure surrounded by flames on the basketball court and descended, her glow of rainbow light turning off when her feet touched the ground.
Karolina took a few steps closed and then stopped, lingering there, watching instead of introducing herself. She didn’t want to distract or interrupt the other mutant. The flames climbed higher and higher and though she stood a safe distance away she could still feel the heat coming off of them. She had to wonder just how hot they were burning, awed by the amazing sight.
In all of hir focusing, Xavin hadn't noticed Karolina at first. Flames were rolling off of hir fingers rapidly, and it was getting hotter and hotter. Despite the intensity of the flames, Xavin wasn't feeling the least bit uncomfortable or shaky from the energy. Actually, it felt very good to let it all out.
After a few moments, ze turned to let out another burst (maybe try some spiraling loops this time), but was surprised to find the pretty blonde girl standing there and staring back at her. Xavin's eyes widened, and ze extinguished the flame down to one fiery ball between hir hands instead. Containing it and composing hirself.
"Hello," Xavin greeted with a tiny smile. "Did I startle you?"
“Oh, no, not at all!” Karolina quickly reassured, returning the smile with her own hundred watt one. A small laugh followed and she admitted, “Well, maybe a little, but only at first. Then, I had to come and see because it looked so amazing. I didn’t interrupt you, did I? Sorry, I can be so nosey. You’d think I’d know better.” She probably should have considered it more before she’d flown over here. Even with staying out of the way, coming to watch without permission when ze was working so hard was a little rude.
"No, you did not interrupt. Sometimes being inside, and not releasing some of this energy...it can be almost painful. I just like to go where I will not burn anything down," Xavin admitted, smile growing with each word.
Karolina's smile was quite infectious, ze couldn't help but think. "Outside is surprisingly more controlled than the Danger Gym. The constant supervision can be a bit annoying!"
Karolina playfully pulled a face, her nose wrinkling in distaste, “I bet! It must feel like being babysat.” Since the fire was gone now, she moved closer. “I’m Karolina, by the way. It’s nice to meet you.” She smiled at Xavin and offered out a hand to shake. “I think we talked on the computer?”
"That we did. You are the rainbow girl," Xavin confirmed, eyes lighting up with a glint of interest, and took Karolina's hand gently--but assertively.
“I am!” Karolina responded warmly, her smile big. “I think I could get used to people calling me that.” It made her love her mutation that little bit more somehow. She’d spent so long feeling like an outcast, but here all anyone talked about was how cool or interesting it was. Rainbow Girl made her feel special instead of different.
"So it really is a fitting name, then?" Xavin asked with interest, and expression very much showing so.
Students at this school seemed to be able to do so many fantastic things, but turning into a rainbow was certainly something that had to be seen. Not because Xavin found it unbelievable, of course, but because the mental image likely could not do it justice.
“I think so! It’s more fitting than the codename I went with, but I like it so,” Karolina smiled and shrugged. “Would you like to see? I can’t promise it’ll be as impressive as yours though.”
Xavin was interested in the selected code name, admittedly, but was even more interested in seeing these powers in use. Definitely more interested in that. Ze nodded quickly. "I'm not sure I believe that last part at all, Karolina, but yes. I would love to see you demonstrate your abilities."
Karolina lit up, colors floating across her bright and burning like liquid paint. She lifted off the ground, hovering over it for a moment, and then flew higher. She went up towards the sky, flying fast, rainbow trailing behind her, and dived back down with a gleeful laugh. Slowing as she neared the ground, she flew around Xavin, giving hir a smile and a wave, and then flew back up again to let out a small burst of brilliant light.
Breathless from exhilaration, Karolina came back down, landing neatly on the ground and dispelling her rainbow light. “Ta-da!” she announced playfully, smiling from ear to ear.
She was beautiful, Xavin couldn't help but think. Karolina was pretty when she was not powered up, but the rainbow was a whole other kind of attractive. Not more so, of course, but just different. It was hard to put into words, but it did bring an impressed smile to the Skrullian's face, and ze clapped her hands. "That was fantastic!"
If only Xavin could fly that way. Ze could levitate a little, yes, but that required hir to be fully engulfed in flames. The nudity that happened as a result make things awkward, however--at least for other people. "Very pretty. And the flight...it looks so fun."
“Oh, I love it,” Karolina breathed, her smile huge. “It’s so amazing. There’s nothing like it.” As much as she loved the pretty colors she could turn, it was the flying that was her favorite, it was the flying that made her love her mutation. “It’s like…being free. Completely free, nothing holding you down.” She made a playfully teasing face at herself, wrinkling her nose. “That’s a total cliché, isn’t it?”
Karolina tucked hair that had been pulled loose from her braid during her flight, “The fire looks so fun too.” She smiled at Xavin. “Would you show it to me again?”
"It is not cliché. And while I would say that the fire is 'fun' it is also dangerous." Xavin ended up grinning mischievously, despite the serious tone of hir voice. Both hands went up in flames. "I can change my entire body into flame and no matter how high I make my temperature, I never feel hot."
Taking one step back, Xavin raised hir hands and circled them around a few times, watching the flame chase behind them like a glowing tail. "I can also turn to stone. That one is slightly easier."
Karolina’s eyes went wide. It was amazing. Her smile was big and awed as her gaze followed Xavin’s blazing hands, the trail of fire making them look like tiny comets. “Any mutation can be dangerous depending on how it’s used,” she noted, giving hir a small smile. “Though, I guess fire is substantially more dangerous than rainbow light.”
“Can I see you turn to stone too?” Karolina asked, hopeful.
Xavin only answered with a nod, as the power shift was something that ze was still practicing. It was surprisingly difficult to go from heated flame to cold, hard stone. Xavin clenched hir fists first, extinguishing the flame fully and lowering hir core temperature. The faster it dropped, however, the harder hir skin became. It also lightened to a sandy orange colour and became bumpy in texture. The stone made Xavin thicker and stronger, and it stretched the fabric of hir clothes until they could not stretch anymore.
All that looked the same was the black hair on hir head. "It feels very strange to shape into this." The voice was lower and rougher, too. "But I become very strong. I bet I could lift a car right over my head!"
Maybe someday it ze could venture to a junkyard and see just how much ze could toss around!
Eyes wide with awe again, Karolina watched as Xavin went from flame to stone. She unconsciously reached out, touching a sandstone-colored forearm with light fingertips. Almost immediately after, she realized what she had done and abruptly pulled her hand away, clutching it to her chest as she apologized, “I’m sorry. That was so rude of me. I shouldn’t have touched you without your permission.” Her mouth turned up in a small smile at hir. “That’s amazing too. It’s just as beautiful as the fire.”
Xavin didn't look taken aback. Instead, ze was more curious than anything else. "Did it feel strange? Does it feel like...real stone?"
Something one would find on the beach or in the garden? It was something ze had been wondering since the change was able to happen, if only because the ability to feel touch mostly disappeared. While Xavin would know there was a hand on hir arm, there was no sensation ze got from it. It didn't feel particularly warm like a touch against hir normal skin would feel. Furthermore, and more obviously, Xavin could not really feel hirself with stone hands; it just felt like a resistance against moving or pushing hir hand further, and that was all.
There was just so much that Xavin didn't really know still, so Karolina's bold decision to touch hir wasn't so much rude as it was...interesting.
Since Xavin didn’t seem to mind, Karolina reached out to touch hir forearm again, this time lightly running her fingers along it. “It doesn’t feel strange,” she answered, her expression thoughtfully. “But, it does feel like real stone. A little rough… I went hiking in Red Rock Canyon in Nevada once and it kind of reminds me of that. And you’re warm.” She looked at hir and smiled. “Like rock that has been sitting out in the sun.”
Karolina stopped after her touch moved over the small bump of rock that was Xavin’s wrist and dropped her hand to her side. “Amazing,” she repeated with a smile and then mused aloud, “I wonder if my light feels like anything.”
The reaction brought a small, but flattered smile to Xavin's face, and ze slowly powered down. This time, it was hir who offered out hir hand. "Can I help you answer that?"
“Definitely!” Karolina asked, clearly excited by the prospect. “Thank you!” She lit up in a muted flash of light, rainbow colors flowing across and off her skin. Taking Xavin’s hand, she smiled to herself when she realized she could still feel someone else’s skin when she was like this.
After taking hold of the pretty blonde's hand in hirs, Xavin focused on the power surging against hir skin. These days temperature was tricky and meant different things, but ze could definitely notice a change. It never hurt anymore, especially heat, but it was nice. Something that ze most certainly felt in tune with.
The texture of Karolina's hand, however, felt just like other skin. Xavin did notice how soft and well taken care of it was, though. "Karolina...you are very pleasantly warm."
A happy, pleased sort of smile started to spread across Karolina’s lips. “Yeah?” She looked down at their hands, her colorful one glowing against Xavin’s dark skin. “Sometimes the way it glows reminds me of the sun. I mean, um, I know it looks like a rainbow, but…” She gave a little, shy shrug.
Tucking her hair behind her ear, Karolina turned off her glow. “Anyway, um,” she smiled at Xavin. “Thanks for checking for me.”
Xavin smiled warmly and folded hir hands in front of hir. "It was my pleasure, Karolina." A pause, so Xavin could look over hir shoulder and back at hir company again. "Would you like to walk with me? Through the grounds?"
The offer made Karolina’s smile grow. “I would love to,” she answered, glad for an excuse to hang around a little longer. It would be nice to spend more time with Xavin and getting to know hir better. “It’s too nice of a day to let it go to waste, isn’t it?”
"Precisely. The gardens are not quite gone yet, and the lake is a sight in of itself." Xavin pushed hir hair back and gestured, leading the way for them.
More exploring was always a plus, but mostly ze was rather content with the company.
“Ooh, the gardens,” Karolina said excitedly as she fell into step beside Xavin. “Let’s go there first! I want to see it before it’s gone for the winter.”
It would seem to be the perfect time, yes. Xavin hadn't really gotten to experience cold winter time before--such was life in the Caribbean--but ze was looking forward to it, oddly. Besides, it wasn't as though ze could get terribly cold when ze was able to produce all of this body heat.
Xavin smiled at Karolina warmly. "I'm sure the flowers would be privvy to the next best thing from sunlight, anyway, in their company."
The compliment made Karolina blush a little and smile from ear-to-ear, shy and flattered. “That’s nice of you to say,” she told Xavin. “I be they’d feel the same way about your company.”
It didn't matter how cold the television network said it got outside, or how much the sun decided to hide away, Xavin had decided that the outside of the school was one of hir favourite places.
