Fire Pig and Metal Snake: Lorna's Birthday Saga

Eileen's amazing way of changing the fire colors had John thinking. Perhaps for occasions like this, he could bring along some stuff to change it himself, the actual flames. Copper for green magnesium for purple, etc etc. Of course this was easier said than done in terms of supply... But he could find a way, surely?

... Maybe vitamins?

He twisted both hands in the air and made a fiery jack-o-lantern--a little late, but he really wasn't into Eileen's St. Nick idea. Bit silly, that.

Pretty excited for her fire pig present, Lorna found herself approaching John pretty enthusiastically. She flew over towards him, landing next to John softly.

"Hey you!" she greeted him with a grin. "Love the jack-o-lantern."

"Was juuuust thinking it was a little late," John admitted, turning to her, but keeping the giant flaming pumpkin in shape--since she said she liked it. "Hello hello, birthday girl. You gave me a present on mine and now it's your turn, isn't it?"

"Uh-huh!" Lorna beamed, grin turning a little wild. "Do you remember what I asked for, fire boy?"

"Did we decide on an animal?" John wondered, his own grin upping the wattage to match hers unconsciously. He wiggled his fingers before him to indicate absolute readiness to comply.

"We so did," Lorna said, clasping her hands together tightly. "I want a pig!"

Lorna loved pigs. They really got a bad rap, too. She knew a lot of people liked to refer to gross men as pigs, but Lorna didn't like to do that. No, gross men were worms, while pigs were fun!

“Fire pig!” What more needed to be said? Sometimes, with words, less really was more (though you’d never guess it to read his prose, he knew, he did believe it. He just hadn’t mastered it.) John giggled and rubbed his hands together quickly, then held them out in a dramatic but contained gesture. The fire leapt with the movement, shaping itself into an egg first, then popping out a head and four legs. He made a little round barnyard piggy first—the curly tail wasn’t happening, too intricate, but he gave it a little stubby tail instead.

Fire flashing wildly in his eyes, he turned his attention to Lorna, holding his hands out and the pig up before them. “Wilbur here—or would you prefer something a little more wild boar?”
Lorna clasped her hands together in glee. Okay, the pig was cute, but a boar? She loved those animals just as much.

"Do up a boar!" she decided happily.

John clapped his hands once and then made them into fists, pulling them in towards him. He didn’t need to, but it helped him focus and visualize, and both were key for what he was attempting here. A boar had a lot more, well, spikey parts, and those were intricate. He managed, though, giving it a stand-up ruff on its back and neck, a wider nose and shoulders, and plumping it up about twice as big. “Now that’s what I call a pig!” He announced happily. “What havoc shall it wreak for you, birthday girl?”

It was too bad that they couldn't take it for a walk in the town, Lorna thought. There was a million reasons why that would get them in trouble, and why they couldn't do it, but Lorna could still wish. Still, she grinned wildly at the way her present looked.

"Can it fly through the sky? By the windows?" she asked him. "I want everyone to see it if they happen to look out here!"

“Serve them right if they aren’t out here enjoying the princess’s party,” John agreed with another cackle. Lorna was a bit of a princess, after all, since her father was the big cheese. Well, one of them, but the cool one, anyhow.

He lifted his hands and the boar went upwards, sprouting wispy wings. With a lot of concentration (and giggling) he made them appear and disappear as he zoomed it over the heads of the partygoers and towards the house. “Ha-HA! Pigs can fly!”

"You are seriously the best person at this school," Lorna giggled, and watched the pig happily. "Can you make it breathe fire a little?"

Now this was what celebrating your powers was all about.

Still cackling madly, John swung the fire-pig around, down from the windows and over the party, before letting it breathe a huge gust of fire. Someone in the crowd yelped—that Alaskan boy, HA!—and John giggled even more madly. “We are the best people at this school, because we know what fun is all about.”

Lorna grinned, and pulled her necklace off, letting it twist around in the air and stretch out. She made it look like a tiny snake, and she used her abilities to make it chase the pig. If only she had something bigger to use! "Yes, we do! Now our pig has a friend."

John couldn't stop cackling if he'd tried--not that he ever had tried to stop, even when people had insisted. Their loss! "Metalsnake friend! Oh, this is the banging-est party ever, right now." He had the pig reverse and chase after his little metal friend instead.

Lorna laughed, and made the snake fly through the air, away from the pig made of fire. "Okay you should make your pig eat my snake, I think!"

It would just be cool. Maybe she could see if she was able to protect the metal from being harmed by the fire. It was worth a shot, right?

It never occurred to John that Lorna might not want him to actually destroy her necklace. He cackled and went at this new task with gusto, making the boar a little larger and sending it hard at the neck-snake. "Wooo-hooo, eat it, piggie!"

Concentrating, Lorna created a bright green shield around the metal the second the fire pig surrounded it, her eyes glowing brightly as she did so. It was really hard to concentrate, and her hands were shaking, but so far she was holding her power. It made the fire pig look like it was about to explode from the inside. A hard emerald green was cracking through the soft, orange fire.

"I don't think piggy's digesting my snake very well!" Lorna decided happily. She loved when she did something right with her powers--she bet her father would be so proud of her right now!

"Wowwwwww," John said, then whistled appreciatively. Now that was gorgeous! He had no idea how she was doing it, but he could feel it, like a hard little stone in the boar's middle, where his convection wasn't working its magic like usual. "Never seen or felt anything like that before. You are one in a trillion, aren't you!

"Uh-oh…" He made the pig start convulsing a little. "I think it's making him sick…"

"Maybe he just needs to throw up, and he'll feel better," Lorna suggested, making the metal sky rocket out of the fire, and fall down to the grass. It was still in the green shield, but it was a melted down mess of metal at this point. Lorna would really have to fix it if she wanted to look anything near what it once had been.

"There, all better!"

"Ha-HAAAA-hahahaha!" John could barely see, he was laughing so hard--but he could feel the fire to make the pig look like it was howling upwards in pain and loss. "Poor fire-pig! He's not enjoying the party as much as we are."

"I think he and the snake are really not happy with us," Lorna laughed, holding onto her sides as she did so. "Still. Best birthday-mutant-power-celebration ever!"

"Darling, I have got to agree." John still giggled madly between words, still. He clapped his hands, pushed the fire-pig into a large ball, then sent it exploding in all directions, whizzing over the heads of the partygoers and up into the sky.

Lorna laughed loudly. "Let's go and see what people thought of your explosion."

John nearly jumped, though he was still giggling when he said, "Let's!"
