Roberto and Lil talk for the first time since Bobby started dating Jeane-Marie. Awkwardness naturally occurs but they push through for her sake.
In a hunt for Angelo, Bobby had wound up on the smoking porch. His friend wasn't there but he sat down anyway. Who knew, Angelo might still turn up and that would save Bobby wandering aimlessly for a while.
Checking his pocket though, he had a lighter but no cigarettes which made sense since he wasn't a regular smoker but, still, it was a pretty annoying situation to be in.
Fortunately for Bobby, salvation came in the form of a tall Canadian girl plopping down next to him and immediately offering one from her pack.
"Here," Lil said with a tight smile. Truth be told, she'd almost turned around when she'd spotted the other mutant - Jeanne-Marie's boyfriend - relaxing there alone but in the end, the giantess decided it avoidance would probably lead only to things that were bad and awkward and not just for her but the speedster she still cared very much about, too.
"Oh, obrigado chica. Thank you." He half smiled at her though cautiously. He liked Lil well enough but with all that had happened he felt he probably wasn't her most favourite person around.
The taller mutant just nodded, taking one for herself - then waited for him to light it for her.
He lit hers first and then his own before asking "So, how have you been? We have no spoken in a while." He saw no point in ignoring that fact, after all he had never known Lil to be anything but straight talking.
Lil gave a shrug as she took a deep inhale then released the smoke in a long, slow stream from between her pursed lips. "I'm okay, I guess. Broke up with Scott, classes are back..." One shoulder lifted then fell again. "How are you?" she asked in return though she was pretty sure she already knew the answer to her question.
He stretched his legs out as he got himself comfortable, leaning back against the wall as he took a long, slow drag. "I still have my, uh, problems I suppose but things are looking up.....as I am sure you have heard I have had a reconciliation with Jeanne-Marie and so I am very happy. Yes." He looked to her slowly, waiting for a reaction. Wanting it over with quickly so that he knew where he stood with her.
"Yeah, I heard."
It wasn't particularly warm but it wasn't a frigidly cold reply, either.
She waited a beat then sighed and gave a shake of her head. Why did this have to be so damn awkward? "I'm happy for you guys. She really loves you and I just want her to be happy, you know that, right?"
"It is all I want also." Bobby nodded earnestly. "But I am also sorry if you have been hurt by it."
"Thanks but I knew it was coming," she said with a dry half-smile. "She was never mine. We're close, yeah, and we helped each other out while we were in tough spots but she wasn't ever mine."
"Still, I am sorry." After all she had not denied she had been hurt and that was not something Bobby had ever wanted or intended to be responsible for.
"Thanks." Lil took another drag from her cigarette then fixed him with a steady gaze. "You better take care of her. I don't think you'd hurt her, not intentionally." Not after he'd almost lost her. "But if you do, I will hurt you. Got it?"
He held her gaze as he flicked away ash. "If I ever hurt her that badly again, Dios forbid, I would expect you to. I would more than likely deserve it."
Her lips pursed again and eyes narrowed as if she were considering if his words were good enough before Lil finally nodded. "We got a deal than."
Fingers flicked the ash off the tip of her cigarette with a gentle grace. "You make her cry, I make you cry. Works for me." The threatening gaze slowly shifted into something else, however, after another few beats. "But, um, if you ever got questions or need tips about her or whatever, not that I'm doubting your abilities, just, yeah, ask and I'll try to help you out or whatever."
It was the same offer she'd made to the speedster ( - okay, not exactly the same but the idea behind it was). She just wanted Jeanne-Marie, and by that extent Bobby too, to be happy.
The sudden change of topic had Roberto blinking for a moment. "You, uh, you are offering to share your personal knowledge or...? I think I know what I am doing but, uh, thank you for the offer." He couldn't help feeling there was at least some insult in there. Did she think she knew Jeanne-Marie better than he did now? Or simply doubt Bobby's ability, despite what she'd said?
"I didn't mean like, super personal," she corrected with a roll of her eyes. "I just meant if you ever wanna make something extra good for her once the two of you start really fooling around and having sex, is all. I know she loves you and that you got experience and all but I figured I could offer tips if you wanted them. If not, it ain't anything on me." She shrugged and went back to her cigarette.
"I...Thank you for the offer." Though he was wondering if there was any way this conversation could get weirder. "I shall certainly bear it in mind."
Lil's head bobbed once in acknowledgement but she couldn't quite get rid of the awkwardness that was still creeping between them. What that fuck was she supposed to say to the guy who was now dating the girl she used to sleep with?!
"Was my kiss at new years so unbearable?" Bobby tried joking, to see if it might help things somehow.
One brow rose slightly at his words and she turned her confused gaze on him. "Um. No. Don't know why you'd think that..."
"I was attempting humour but never mind." He smiled back to prove it.
"...Oh," the giantess replied dumbly then forced a grin. "I really didn't mean it to insult you. I just, got this thing? Where I like to learn what people I am with really like and want. What makes them shiver hardest and moan the loudest. I can't feel alotta stuff myself so I make sure I take time and figure out what's really good for them. Jeanne-Marie's special to me and while I ain't gonna try and steal her back from you 'cause that's not something I'd do, I just want her to be the happiest she can be with someone she loves and who loves her back. That's the only reason I bought it up."
"I understand, I think but, uh, give me the benefit of the doubt, will you please?" He smiled back, pausing to take a drag. "I am much the same. However I do know girls tell each other anything so if it is ever suggested I am not...up to par shall we say, then feel free to give as many suggestions as you like."
"I ain't doubting you," she replied, trying not to growl. Instead, it came out in a half-sort of sigh. That wasn't the point - and Lil couldn't tell if it was just his machismo getting in the way or if he wasn't listening. (Or is she wasn't explaining herself right, but she thought she'd been pretty clear.) It wasn't about him; it was about Jeanne-Marie feeling good and being able to pass on the things she'd learned about the speedster that might take him weeks or months to discover.
"But yeah, fine. If she says anything, I'll tell you," Lil added with a little wave of her hand and then shoved her cigarette back in her mouth to keep from saying anything else without filtering it through her brain first.
After a pause, he asked "Are things always going to be weird with us now?" He hoped not, he honestly liked Lil. She was refreshing company even if things were often misunderstood in translation.
"I dunno," she answered honestly, letting her hands hang down between her legs when she flicked away more ash and watched the breeze carry it the ground. "I ain't ever done anything like this before. You know, with another girl. She and me are still friends and close and all but honestly? I dunno. I wanna be friends but I can't tell if you feel annoyed with me or not 'cause she gave me her virginity insteada you."
"I'm not annoyed, no." Bobby told her honestly "She made her choice and I respect that. Besides hr virginity was not a prize to be won. Not in my eyes. Our first time together will still be our first time together no matter who came before us. I...I am not sure if I am explaining this perfectly."
"I don't think I am, either," Lil admitted, brushing her bangs from her eyes with her free hand. "I just wanted to make sure you weren't pissed at me or anything because I know there are guys who'd be all kindsa threatened and stuff and I don't think you're like that but I wanna make sure so things don't get even weirder in the future between us if we all hang out together or something."
"I do not see you as a threat, no, and I do not hate you. You have both told me how things were and how they are know and I believe you both, I have no reason not to." He stubbed out and then flicked away the butt of his cigarette. "You and she were friends before and I like to think you and I were also, so I do not see why we shouldn't continue to be so."
"... okay. Okay." Lil nodded once, twice, three times, as if to assure them both it really was. "That's okay. That's good. We can do that. Be friends, I mean." She wasn't a threat to him, he wasn't a threat to her. They could be cool and... okay. Would be, for Jeanne-Marie's sake if not for their own.
Right.
Friends. She could try it.
"So. Um. You excited for the World Cup? All the qualifiers have been on TV..."
Bobby nodded slowly "Excited. Jealous. All of the emotions." By and large he'd made peace with the fact that he would never play for his country's team but it still stung at times. "I have of course been watching. I am surprised you have though."
One shoulder lifted and fell again. "I like soccer. Why wouldn't I be watching it? Bummed Canada is out of it, though. But not really surprised."
"I simply did not know your interest. You have never joined those of us who are in the 'soccer' club here. You are welcome to if you ever wish, however." Bobby exhaled slowly, flicking ash away carefully.
"I ain't really the club kinda person unless it involves loud music, booze and dancing," she admitted. "I'll try to stop by the rec room though next time there's a big game on and see if anyone's there watching."
"I usually am though not always in the rec room." He certainly didn't want her thinking they couldn't hang out anymore just because of Jeane-Marie. "I could send you a message next time?"
Lil nodded as she took another hit from her cigarette. "Yeah. Sure. That'd be great." Hell, the Canadian even managed a sincere smile to go along with the words.
"Cool." He returned her smile before stubbing out on the step. "Shall I leave you to enjoy your smoke in peace or do you think you can suffer a little more of my company?"
There was a moment of silence during which Lil chewed on her bottom lip before she pulled out the carton of cigarettes to offer him another one. "If we're gonna spend a whole ninety minutes together watching a match, we might as well make sure we can stand each other for a bit longer," the giantess reasoned with a smile.
"Obrigado." He smiled a little as he accepted the cigarette. "I do not think that Jeanne-Marie likes this habit much but it is better than some of the things I have done this summer. Besides everyone should have at least one vice to save them from a lifetime of dullness, I think."
"I couldn't agree with you more," Lil agreed and held out a light for him.
In a hunt for Angelo, Bobby had wound up on the smoking porch. His friend wasn't there but he sat down anyway. Who knew, Angelo might still turn up and that would save Bobby wandering aimlessly for a while.
