Eames acts as Fairy Godfather and takes Felix and Remus shopping! Felix is in "disguise", Eames is a questionable influence, and Remus is dissuaded from baggy pants. This is almost unbearably adorable.
Eames was extremely pleased that Remus and Felix agreed to go out on a shopping trip without too many objections or awkward hesitations. He'd been worried he'd have to coax them out with a trail of biscuits and chocolate. Eames was behaving himself, and he wasn't offering to pay for elaborate things and thus take this into a frightening place full of power struggle. He'd scoped out the best discount stores and thrift shops that had quality goods, and tried to keep everything within the budget of the boys' allowances. He was still making outlandish clothing recommondations, but only ones that suited Remus and Felix. Felix, with that hair and striking features, could get away with some fantastic things. Remus... Remus needed more cozy things for his wardrobe. Some items in lavendar wouldn't go amiss as well.
Remus was currently in the changing room, trying on the items that Felix and Eames had helped him pick out. Eames settled down in a chair next to Felix, smiling fondly toward the dressing room curtain. "Thanks for helping me force Remus to get some fresh air. I think a change of scenery has been well in order."
Felix had dressed very carefully for their expedition, concerned as he was about being recognized out in the world. A smart newsboy cap covered most of his hair, while cheap wire-rimmed sunglasses with a slight blue tint muddled the colors of his eyes. The light pair of fingerless gloves covering up the markings on his hands were almost too much for the warming springtime, but Felix coordinated the rest of his clothes to make these accessories seem like harmless affectations. Besides, he was exceedingly practiced at ignoring anyone who looked at him askance.
"He's the sweetest, isn't he?" Felix asked, with a very slight, conspiratorial lean. His smile lit up his pretty face, a sincere smile that usually only appeared when Warren Worthington was nearby. "I've been wanting to dress him up, too. He's been wearing potato sacks for a month, I'm sure."
"I'll admit, he brings out this latent mother-bear tendency that I'm horrified to realize that I have." Eames grinned. "I've been spending the month sneaking him pastries. He's very sweet. He inspires ridiculous urges. Replacing his wardrobe with something worthy of a young man as opposed to a grumpy hobbit is one of those urges."
Felix broke into a lilting, musical giggle at the idea of Remus living in a hobbit-hole and stomping around the Shire. Had they not been tucked away by the changing rooms, he might have drawn stares for an entirely different reason -- the one he was trying to avoid, in fact. His own usual reluctant sweetness seemed to have been replaced by a near sparkling energy. "Surely he can't deny both of us, right? If we get him cleaned up, he'll be the darling of the whole school."
"I am very okay with this." Eames' smile warmed, his whole body relaxing back into his seat as he watched Felix with some small pleasure. It was so good seeing him happy, especially out here in a public place. Non-skittery Felix was joy to behold. "How have you been, darling? I admit I've focused most of my fussing on Remus lately, but I can't help but notice you've seem to be doing very well on your own."
It wasn't a secret, but Felix paused for a moment, holding in his private knowledge for just those extra few seconds longer while the tint of his sunglasses only mildly muffled the delight in his eyes. "I've been hanging out with one of the new class of students. Do you know Caius? Tiny, blond, delicate like a china doll?" Not to mention as flamboyant in his dress and mannerisms as Felix had striven to become. Felix was clearly excited at the prospect of a friend to whom he could relate.
"Oh, he's very difficult to miss. We haven't met formally yet, things have been sort of... busy..." With classes coming to an end and all of the personal relationship drama, then the sudden lack of drama. "Good person?"
"Caius is adorable," Felix assured him, his hands fluttering to emphasize his words -- gushing, really. "He's such fun and he has the most delicious clothes. I'm sure you would love him." His brows lifted as if this were quite scandalous before adding, "He has a very smart mouth."
"Oh dear," Eames said, touching a hand to his heart. "Well I hope he doesn't lead you into too much mischief. It's always the smart ones."
Felix's nose wrinkled up when he laughed. Eames gave him plenty of practice at just the sort of effortless banter he was working hard to perfect; he wanted to be able to match chatter with Shinobi Shaw, after all. "I can't promise I'll behave. It's far too much fun to get into adventures with him."
"You never have to behave as long as you hide your tracks well," Eames said with a wink. "You are an honorable adventurer and mischief maker."
"I'll keep that in mind," Felix promised, his eyes bright behind his glasses. His attention strayed toward the fitting rooms, half suspecting Remus would slip out and overhear. "I wouldn't like it if Remus became disappointed in me, after all."
"Remus has these insane levels of tolerance and acceptance. He likes rooming with me, after all." Eames nudged the arm of Felix's chair, not touching Felix himself. "Hard to disappoint."
The smile Felix turned on Eames was smaller, but grateful. "I'll try not to tax his tolerance too much."
"Push comes to shove, here's a secret trick. Even on his growliest days he can be swayed by chocolate." Even if he was still cranky and wolfy and sulked and glowered while he nibbled it.
Felix gave a little sigh and a smile, clearly fond of Remus' precious little quirks. That was not a very common expression for the boy, but Remus had managed to wriggle into Felix's regard very quickly. "If he needs any help next month, you can call me," he noted, so that Eames would know what he knew.
Eames smiled gratefully. "Absolutely. Thanks, Felix."
It had taken Remus rather a long time in the dressing room because he was self conscious about his appearance, and it was strange knowing that people were waiting outside to look at him, even if it was just Felix and Eames. He had put on a pair of corduroy trousers and a pale blueish purple sweater that Eames had picked out for him. He felt as if the trousers were too tight, but then, it might have just been because he wasn't accustomed to wearing clothes that fit properly.
Finally he stepped out, and offered a little smile, tucking his hair behind his ear.
The moment Remus emerged, Felix hopped up, eager to see how the outfit had come together. He clasped his hands together with a grin of delight, and just barely managed to keep himself from clapping. "Look at you! That color is perfect. You're beautiful!"
"Love it," Eames agreed. "Comfortable?"
Remus looked a bit surprised by the enthusiasm of the compliment - he was pretty sure he'd never been called beautiful before. "I... think so? Do these trousers fit correctly?" He turned to the side, trying to gauge.
With his affected-seeming accessories and fluttering hands, Felix did his best impression of a fairy god-brother, taking a turn around Remus to view him from all sides. "They look lovely on you. It suits your frame but it's not indecent. Don't ever wear skinny jeans," he added, pointing a very serious finger at Remus when he looked up, but an instant later, he smiled.
"Wise advice. Must give the boys room to breath," Eames supplied helpfully.
Remus nodded, and then smiled a little. "Well, okay. It looks nice to me, I guess."
Felix shot Eames a scandalized, wide-eyed look for his comment, but apparently, Remus did not pick up on what Eames meant. Since Remus was distracted, it seemed, Felix put a hand over his mouth, then mimed a little key-turning motion. He wouldn't mention it, but he wanted Eames to know he'd heard it.
"You look splendid," he assured Remus, then asked, "How do you feel about warmer weather clothes? Shorts? T-shirts? All the most interesting t-shirts come used."
Eames barely kept from snorting softly. Poor Remus had to live with him, that was probably low on the list of scandalous things he may have heard at this point. Really, watching Eames paw through a drawer of ladies knickers had probably broken Remus in a little bit. Still, he'd behave for both their sakes. "We can stock you up for fairer weather. Heaven knows we get more sun here then home."
"Oh, um... I usually just wear trousers," Remus said awkwardly. And long sleeves too, when he could get away with it. His face wasn't the only place with scars. "But I suppose I could try a few things."
"Me too," Felix confided, as his current wardrobe would attest. "But if it gets as hot here as it did in Missouri, you're going to want to at least roll your sleeves up sometimes. And anyway, shorts for men are mostly knee-length, so you're not too terribly exposed."
"You may want to have some options for when it's hotter. And don't worry, you'll hardly be exposed. Leave that to Bobby if Pietro ever gets him drunk enough to wander the halls practically naked again. That's about what it takes to shock and surprise our questionable student body."
"I don't think I want to do that," Remus said, and then with a wry little smile added, "Though that's one of the reasons it's super important I don't get loose on full moons, yeah?" Pause. "Though to be fair, one of the less important reasons."
Felix didn't understand for a moment, but then it occurred to him that wolves didn't wear clothes -- not even wolves that eventually turned back into boys. He gulped, hoping the other fellows didn't notice, and tried not to think about Remus sleeping, adorably, naked. "All the more reason to have clothes you're comfortable in that aren't complicated," he answered, and hoped his voice didn't squeak.
"So you can shed or don them as you wish," Eames concurred cheerfully.
Remus blushed a little. "I'm more interested in the donning than the shedding really, but um..." He smiled awkwardly. "If you both like these then I think they'll do. I'll just go put my clothes back on." And he ducked back into the dressing room.
Felix quirked a tilted smile at Remus' back, watching the other boy go. As soon as he was out of sight, he turned slightly widened eyes on Eames, and whispered, "Did you really have to bring up naked Bobby?"
"What? Isn't that a normal occasion to warn for?" Eames asked innocently.
"We're in public and I don't want to get bothered in front of Remus!" Felix whispered, still giving Eames an expectant look.
"Oh, Felix, my darling," Eames said apologetically. "I promise to try to be a better chaperone. I may fail horribly, but I'll put in a bit more effort."
Felix couldn't help snorting into a muffled giggle. "I promise I won't mistake you for a good influence." Then, quieter, and impossibly more sweet, he added, "Thanks for bringing us out today."
"Anytime. I love spending time with you both. It's wonderful getting to hang out with other people who have great taste, and doubly wonderful to see Remus come out of his shell for a while."
That statement, more than anything, made Felix light up with pleasure. Being liked by someone he practically idolized was an incredible feeling, and Eames even sounded like he meant it. That was more than worth one of Felix's sunlight smiles.
