Kurt and Harley swap acrobatic notes - and tricks! - at the cast party.
Harley pulled to the side of the party for a breather. She'd been sort of hanging around the edges of conversations, but didn't really know anyone well (seriously, where were Victor and Vance?). Everyone was really nice about it, but she felt like she was intruding.
Outside was nice and open, and when she spotted some nearby trees with low branches she smiled. If she perched in one of those, she could keep an eye on the party without feeling so trapped. Maybe she'd learn more about some of the others.
The perfect branch was just a few inches out of reach. With a quick running start, she was able to hook her hands around it and swing forward, adding a small flip that, with a brief release, landed her squarely in a sitting position on the branch. Stupidly pleased that it had worked, she grinned as she steadied herself, then heard the soft clack of her phone hitting tree roots below. She glared down at it. "Oh come on..."
Kurt caught sight of Harley as she started to pull herself up into the tree, watching as it turned into acrobatics and she swung and flipped with a graceful ease. More than a little impressed and definitely curious, he put a hand on Blaine’s arm and said, “I will be right back.” He kissed his boyfriend’s cheek and then teleported over.
Appearing at the base of the tree, Kurt scooped up a cellphone that was on the ground by his feet. He looked at it and then looked up at the dangling legs above him. “Coming up!” he called. Passing the cellphone off to his tail, he took a few steps back to give himself a short, running start to mimic the acrobatic maneuver Harley had done. He landed sitting beside him. “Hallo,” he greeted with a grin. His tail passed the phone back to his hand and he offered it out to her, “I believe this is yours.”
Harley knew Kurt - she'd passed him props and brought him messages in her duties as gofer for the play, and he'd always seemed nice. She knew he was blue and furry, that his eyes were that amazing yellow, that his tail picked things up and his hands and feet were different. She even knew he could teleport, technically, though she'd never seen it.
But if she'd been less well-trained, she probably would've fallen out of the tree in surprise when he appeared in a puff of smoke below her. And then he replicated her improv tree-sit-flip! She didn't know anyone else here had training like that!
"Hello yourself!" Blinking at him stupidly, she accepted her phone. "And thanks! That was the most awesome phone-retrieval ever," she grinned up at him, "and you totally used my move!"
“It was a good move! It was just begging to be tried,” Kurt replied, grinning. “I had no idea you were so acrobatic.” He didn’t know Harley very well at all actually. She was always so quiet, scurrying around like a little mouse while she helped with the play, out of sight unless she was passing off a prop or delivering a message. This would be a great opportunity to get to know here better. “Are you a gymnast?”
"I guess it takes one to know one," she answered happily. Always nice to find a kindred spirit! "My dad's my coach, so I've been training, like, all my life. Where'd you learn?" She paused, considering thoughtfully, then tilted her head and asked with genuine curiousity, "...and how does it work with your tail?"
The questions had Kurt smiling. “The same as it works with your hands. I can use it to hold onto things, and it helps with my balance.” He wasn’t sure how to compare it to not having a tail, since he’d always had one and didn’t really know the difference. “I did not use it in my acts very often. My mother was worried someone would get suspicious.”
“And I learned at Der Jahrmarkt.” Kurt drew his feet up onto the branch, balancing comfortably. “That is the circus I grew up in. I was a trapeze artist and an acrobat.” He smiled, proud, but not bragging. “My sister and I were the star acts.”
"No way," she said, sure he was making at least some of that up. Then again, he certainly looked like he was telling the truth. "Wait, for real? You mean you're a circus-trained acrobat, and somehow we haven't hung out before?"
Grinning, Kurt held up a hand like he was taking an oath, “For real.” He put his hand down, wrapping both of his arms around his knees. “We are hanging out now. Better late than never, ja? In our defense, the school’s gym does not lend itself to practicing high-flying acts, so you could not have known.” He was surprised that they hadn’t run into one another at the gym though, as he did spend a decent amount of time there, often training on the floor mats.
"I guess not," she said thoughtfully. She hadn't really noticed, since she wasn't much for high-flying anyways, but there wasn't a foam pit or nets or anything. Then she grinned again, turning to face him by tucking her legs into a lotus position and balancing sideways on the branch. So many questions! But first and most important: "So, what's your coolest move?"
Kurt turned to mirror Harley, facing her with his legs tucked under him, “It is subjective, I think. But, my favorite is when both the trapeze are free swinging and I backflip from one and hook onto the other with my knees. The best tricks though are from the group acts. I have a lot of favorites from those.” He smiled a little, then added, smile growing to an excited grin, “I have been practice acrobatics with my teleportation now too and that has opened up opportunities for a bunch of cool, new moves.”
He propped an elbow on his knee, and cradled his chin in his hand. “What about you?”
Harley bounced eagerly, almost unable to decide where to begin responding to all this information. "Floor exercise is my favorite, I can do a front layout to a front two and a half twist," she said, with the breezy nonchalance of a professional. "But I've never learned much about group acrobatics! Can you teach me?"
“Of course!” Kurt readily replied, grinning at Harley. “That would be a lot of fun. And I would be honored to teach an enthusiast such as yourself. We will have to get together in the gym sometime.” He nodded at the ground below. “Want to show me that front layout to a front two and a half twist now?”
"Dunno if I can land it without the springy floor, but we can find out!" Judging the distance to a grassy, root-free patch below, Harley stood and carefully found her footing. The branch had some give, so this wouldn't be exactly like a beam dismount, and there were branches above her to keep in mind. Satisfied, she threw herself towards the chosen spot, tucking her arms and legs and flipping three times before sticking the landing. Grinning, she moved out of the landing spot with a quick handspring and a half, leaving her in a handstand, and called up a teasing, "You coming?"
“Look out below!” was Kurt’s answer. He hopped to his feet and jumped off the branch, grabbing onto another branch and swinging from it. Releasing, he spun and twisted through the air before landing neatly on his feet. He back flipped into a handstand and then turned himself around to face Harley, grinning at her. “Hallo again,” he said, balancing on one hand so that he could wave to her.
Oh, he was good! He didn't have the finesse of the gymnasts she was used to, but the raw talent was definitely there (and his way looked way more fun!). Lifting one of her own hands, she gave him a little salute, then threw the arm wide and twirled her way back to her feet. "Alright, time to bring out the big guns. Let's see about this two and a half twist..."
