Lorna and Alex, Backdated 15/03/13

Lorna and Alex enjoy quality powers training time. Much cute awkwardness ensues.

Though his talk with Noriko had made Alex feel a little better about his powers, they were still, well, almost totally destructive in nature; he couldn't just cut loose anywhere he felt like it without doing significant damage to the grounds (and possibly draw attention to the school). But it was winter, so everything was pretty waterlogged and cold, and if he just picked the right spot, it wouldn't be < i>too big a deal. Probably. Besides, figuring out how to get a handle on the 'splodey was the whole reason he was there.

Well, that, and re-connecting with his brother. He still wasn't sure which was going to end up being harder.

Driving those thoughts out of his head, Alex concentrated on that boiling energy at his core, the heat he always seemed to be aware of, nowadays. Upper teeth sinking into his lower lip, he focused on pulling some of it up along the lengths of his arms, currently pointed out over the middle of the lake. Glowing plasma erupted from his fingertips, dissolving a wide hole in the ice and driving a fine, warm, white mist into the winter air.

Not a bad first effort.

Lorna liked being outside because it was when she felt more in tune with her powers. Being outside meant that she could step on the snow and on the earth, where she could hold her hands out and feel the spark of the world's magnetic fields. Even though it was cold, she went outside with her coat on, and eventually came across Alex. A half smirk formed on her face, and she watched him form afar for a few moments before she decided to approach, green energy sparking from her hands as she did so.

"Practicing your powers?" she called out. "Looks fun."

Eyes widening, Alex spun around with an expression that almost suggested he'd been caught doing something wrong--like throwing rocks at puppies or masturbating in the shower, or something. But he relaxed a little when he saw it was Lorna. "It is kind of cool," he confirmed with a nod. "It's nice not having to worry about wrecking anything, or feeling like it's something I can't control. Owe that more to the other kids than anything else, I think."

The residual plasma rising from his fingertips began arcing in the (hot) green-haired girl's direction, particularly the energy sparking around her hand. "Huh," said Alex, watching the thin streamers circle in a lazy orbit around her palm before eventually dissipating. "Never seen it do that before."

"Really?" Lorna asked curiously, then held one hand up, and blasted her own energy up towards the sky. It was just a small line of green energy, and it disappeared rather quickly. "Maybe your powers are < i>attracted to mine. You did say that Erik nearly caused you to lose control, right?"

"Could be," Alex admitted. "I don't know all the science behind my powers, but electromagnetic changes can attract," he totally wasn't blushing, it was just cold out, "or, you know, change how plasma behaves. And yeah, your dad did almost cause another mini-meltdown. Totally not on purpose, I mean, but ... stuff was definitely affected." He concentrated on keeping his output down to a harmless trickle--really a lot harder than it sounded--and watched with no small wonder as the tiny streams flowed toward the green energy Lorna was projecting before they dissipated in the cold air.

"That's kind of awesome," he judged.

"I think so," Lorna agreed, and let both her hands spark up again, holding them out towards the sky. Again, she let the energy burst out into the sky, and she smirked a little as she did so, mostly wanting to have fun with her powers like he was. "I don't do anything to your powers, do I?"

"Uh," Alex began stupidly, his powers sparking slightly, but not flaring up into anything at all dangerous as it followed Lorna's magnetic bolt up and away. "If you mean do you make me feel like I'm going to melt down like Three Mile Island when you're up close and using your powers, then no. I mean, there's a ... change, but it's not like losing control. That feeling is a lot worse than this."

"Interesting," Lorna commented, and began just sparking between her hands, creating a web of energy from fingertip to fingertip. She had to admit, the fact that her and Alex's powers interacted like that was very intriguing to her, and it was a reason why she felt drawn to Alex. "Are your blasts always massive, or can you create little bolts of energy like this?"

Alex held out his hands and concentrated hard, his effort obvious in the intent expression on his face. Slowly, though, his hands began to light up, fine lines of glowing plasma licking between his outstretched fingers. "This is, like, super-hard though," he admitted. "Just letting a big destructive blast come out in a rush is way easier."

"Here," Lorna said, and began making a big ball of energy with her hands, holding it together tightly as she looked at Alex. Doing so was enough to make her eyes glow, but she hardly cared. If she could, she'd make them glow all the time. "Try focusing all your power into this, but try doing it so it's not all a massive wave. Let it come in little spurts, naturally. Maybe it can be some practice for you."

Wow. That eye-glowy thing she was doing was so fucking cool! Why hadn't he gotten eye glowing? Once again, Darwin proved himself a vindictive old fucker. That aside, she made an interesting proposal, and he didn't like to pass up an opportunity to work on his powers. On the other hand, he wasn't really comfortable pointing all that intense radiation he thought was pretty nice and really, really hot. So it presented a bit of a conundrum.

Well. Fuck it! He'd just be ... really super-careful, and just let it out in a dribble. If it felt like it was getting out of hand, he could always stop. At least, he was mostly sure he could ...

"Like this?" Alex asked, letting a ribbon of plasma spill from the tips of his ten outstretched fingers and flow toward the energy globe Lorna held suspended between her hands.

It was a strain to feel that energy hit her globe, and she almost had to take a step backwards from the pressure she felt. However, she just made her ball of energy a bit bigger, and she concentrated on keeping it stable. "Yeah, keep on doing it! I've got a hold on this."

This was not only practice for him, but her as well, and she was liking it.

Alex wasn't oblivious to the strain, either, and as Lorna's magnetic sphere expanded, he began to feel a weird sort of ... tug. At first, it was nothing he couldn't keep a handle on, but as the seconds ticked away, he noticed it more and more. Suddenly, a stronger gout of plasma burst from his hands and flowed at Lorna like a strong wave ... a superhot, super-dangerous wave.

"Lorna!"

"ALEX, stop! You're going to hurt--" Lorna exclaimed, and held her hands out, creating a green force field around herself as she flew back. Blinking, she looked down at her body, not really knowing what had just happened. All she knew was that she was levitating just a little above the ground in a green bubble of energy. She hadn't done this before, so she was scared that she wouldn't know how to get down. Her powers had protected her, and that was good, but it was all so strange at the same time. Cool on the levitating herself part, not so cool on the getting blasted part. That had been some force behind his power, wow.

The levitation only lasted a few seconds luckily, and she landed on the ground with a thump. She looked down at her body to see if his powers had actually injured her anywhere. Thanks to her own powers, he hadn't been able to hurt her this time.

"Wow," she blinked up at him before slowly getting to her feet. "You're...you're really powerful, Alex."

"I'm a fucking idiot, is what I am," said Alex, his expression still reflecting a mixture of horror, alarm, and self-loathing. He hurried over to Lorna's side and began checking her over for burns or bruises, or anything amiss. "You sure you're okay? God, I am so, so sorry--I don't know what I was thinking and I ... I'm an idiot."

"I'm okay," she insisted, and then took her jacket off so she could show him that a little better. It was fairly chilly out, but whatever. This was kind of important. "Look! Unless, you know, your powers give people cancer, or something."

She gave Alex something of a pointed look. "It was an accident, okay? These things happen, and I'm fine."

Alex looked Lorna over carefully, and--for once--teenage hormones were only barely in play. He was more interested, for the moment, in verifying that he really hadn't managed to hurt the girl with his dumbass display of stupidity. Thank Christ Scott hadn't been around to see it. "Yeah," he said slowly. "Yeah, okay. If you're sure you're all right. I'm sorry."

He made a face. "And no, my powers don't cause cancer." There was a short pause, then," You know. I don't think. Probably not."

"Alex, it's okay. I'm fine, you're fine, so let's just chalk this up to a usual power accident," Lorna said, and brought her hand up to Alex's cheek, tapping it against his face. She then pulled her hand back, and began to put her jacket back on. "Besides, my powers protected me, so I think we're good. I bet I could even take another hit."

The look he gave her was incredulous. "We are not trying that again!" he said vehemently. "Not until someone with degrees tells me it's safe." Probably not even then, but he didn't want to come across as completely unreasonable. And, anyway, he was kind of muddled by how nice Lorna's hand had felt on his cheek.

"But I'm glad you're okay. I'd hate to turn you off of powers training with me."

"If anything, I'll thank you! You made me fly, and I've been trying to do that for awhile," Lorna said proudly, shooting him another big smile. "I'll practice powers with you anytime, okay? I think we both have a lot to learn still."

"Yeah," he agreed, even if deep down he was feeling like what he most needed to learn was how not to be a colossal dumbass. Still, that smile was contagious, and he couldn't help but off a huge, idiotic grin in return. "Definitely. But, Dude, if you can fly, that would be the most badass thing ever. In the history of badass things. I'm pretty much grounded in my blowing stuff up."

"Then I guess I'll have to take you flying when I have a better handle on it," Lorna lulled. Honestly, she was glad that she finally got into the air. Now all she'd have to do is try, try, try again and not stop until she got it. She couldn't wait until her father saw, and if anyone asked, well maybe she'd leave out the tiny part about Alex blasting her in the chest.

"I bet I could even lift you with my powers, but I don't think people like that too much," she joked.

He knew that his grin and grown to absolutely goofy proportions, but Alex couldn't give himself to give a dead rat's ass, just then. Because one of the prettiest girls he'd ever met was trying to make him feel better and had offered to take him flying, and these were Improbably Cool Things. And he told her as much. "That would be cool."

His expression scrunched up a bit, though, at that other thing she mentioned. "That does sound kind of ... weird," Alex admitted. "But I'm not the kind of guy who decides about something without trying it." Even if the thought of flying without a perfectly good airplane around him seemed, well, effin' crazy--still! "Why don't you give it a shot? Least I can do, right?"

Lorna tilted her head in amusement, and smirked. Alex was a pretty adventurous guy, it seemed. She liked that, and every time they talked, it seemed like Alex grew more interesting.

"You sure?" she questioned, just to make sure.

He patted himself on the chest with both hands in invitation. "Ab-solultely," Alex declared, without a trace of hesitation or doubt. "C'mon, hit me with your best shot. I can take it." Maybe. Possibly. Probably wouldn't kill him, anyway ...

... crap.

"Okay, but remember you said I could," Lorna lulled, then held her hands out. Carefully, she encased Alex in a highlight of green energy, and tried to lift him up. She didn't know why she could lift people, but it took so long to fly herself. Maybe it was different, she didn't know, but she was going to be damn sure she excelled at both things.

Her powers lifted Alex about a foot off the ground, and she held him steady, her eyes glowing as she did so. "HIgher?"

It wasn't exactly comfortable, being hoisted off the ground like that--it didn't feel like being lifted, really, more like ... gravity had sort of lost its grip on him a little. A weightless kind of sensation. Really, really fucking weird. And it was kind of unnerving enough just being held this short distance from terra firma. So Alex had to swallow heavily before he managed, "Sure. Higher's cool." Long as it was just a little higher. He didn't want to be up in the stratosphere, or anything.

Lorna wouldn't rocket him up into the sky, no, she knew better than to even try that. Though she could do small things like these, she still had so much to learn when it came to using her abilities, especially this aspect of them. Right now, she was curious to see how she could get Alex up a little higher if she lifted herself up at the same time.

Using the same energy to bring herself down as she had when Alex blasted her, Lorna slowly levitated herself upwards, and brought herself up to Alex's height. Since Alex said she could do higher, Lorna made them both fly up just another foot off the ground, and she couldn't help but smile proudly down below. She felt shaky when it came to herself, but she had a pretty firm hold on Alex. With more practice and learning, Lorna knew she'd be better at this in no time. Making herself fly was way different than lifting someone else, that was for sure. It caused for different energies, and different concentration.

However, she'd be an expert soon enough, and Erik would be so proud of her.

"Isn't this cool?" she gushed to Alex. "It's like we're standing on an invisible table."

Alex grinned back, but there was something decidedly nervous in it. "This is definitely the coolest thing ever. In the history of cool. Believe me." As for feeling like standing on a table ... he wasn't quite prepared to go that far. To him, it still felt like he was flying in the face of the laws of physics through forces unknown, and that any moment one or the other party would prove victorious, sending him either hurtling into orbit or face-first into the frozen turf.

But ... Lorna looked so happy. How could he fuck that up?

"Seriously, you have to keep up with this. It is awesome."

"I'm going to," Lorna decided with finality. "I'm going to practice and keep doing this until I'm a pro, even if it gets me bruises along the way. Then when I've got all my control, I'm going to take you flying for real."

She grinned, and levitated just a little closer to Alex. "If you ever fell, though, I could save you in an instance. You'd be perfectly safe."

Lorna knew that would be true later, but she didn't trust herself to be that in control right now. She not only needed to control her energy, but she needed to make sure that another body along with her own wouldn't slip out of her grasp. It'd be a lot harder than this simple levitation trick, that was for sure.

Though it took more effort than he wanted to admit, Alex wasn't sure he was in love with that "flying for real" idea. But he chose for the moment to concentrate on the part where Lorna was indicating maybe she wouldn't mind spending time with him again in the future. That was pretty awesome. He could consider the more stomach-wrenching implications of that idea later.

"Then I'll make sure never to fall from any airplanes or skyscrapers unless you're around to catch me," he promised. "Dunno how useful blowing stuff up with plasma is ever gonna be, but ... you know, if it ever comes up. Totally at your disposal."

"I'll remember that," Lorna grinned at him. Yes, Lorna wouldn't mind spending more time with Alex. He was cute and sweet, and though they'd only known each other a short time, they seemed to have a fair bit in common with one another. Alex was fun to hang out with and be around, and Lorna was glad that he seemed to feel the same way. At least, he never appeared to be in a bad mood when they hung out together.

"And I'm sure your powers will be useful for something, when the time comes," Lorna continued. "Just as long as you don't go total evil mutant on all of us, and blow up said skyscrapers and airplanes."

"Well, you never know," he teased, though good-humoredly. "But I don't feel any urge just now to tie any pretty girls to railroad tracks or laugh maniacally or give long expository speeches. We'll see how a few more years of violent video games affects my emotional development."

He glanced back toward the school. "So," he began slowly, trying not to think too hard and in so doing free the hell out, "feel like going inside for a hot chocolate, or something?"

"Alright," Lorna said, and began lowering them back to the ground. When they were down again, she playfully tapped his nose with his finger. "But you're making it, okay? And I'll get us some cookies."

"Fair deal," he agreed, grinning broadly. "C'mon," he said, breaking into a jog and half-turning to beckon her after him. "Winner gets extra marshmallows."

Smirking, Lorna ran after him. "Deal!"
