Felix brings ice cream to tell Caius all about his encounter with Dorian, and decides a few important things along the way.
Felix had such news to discuss with Caius that he knew ice cream was an absolute requirement. He made a special trip to Salem Center, on the bus, alone, to acquire a pint each. It was quite the adventure, and he'd only gotten lost once.
Lest the ice cream melt too quickly, Felix snatched a pair of spoons and a handful of napkins and hurried up to his best friend's room. "Caius," he called from the hallway, bright and cheerful, before he ever bothered to knock. "I have ice cream, let me in?"
Caius' door opened with a whoosh. He greeted his best friend with a wide grin dressed in loose, green satin pants and a print tank top. "Felix! Come in. Did I hear you say ice cream?"
"Of course," Felix confirmed, rustling the bag from the grocery store to produce the container he'd selected for Caius: cherry vanilla. He handed it over with one of the spoons. Felix was still dressed for his trek outdoors, which meant a lush charcoal sweater over a pair of purple skinny trousers. "I have gossip, and it merits hand-delivered ice cream."
Oh this was going to be good. Caius could tell. He stepped aside to let his friend enter, closed the door behind them, and dropped onto his bed with a bounce and a grin. "I am all ears, my dear," he said, lifting the lid off of his pint. "What delicious tidbit do you have for me today?"
Felix's own selection was a pint of coffee chip, which he wrapped in a napkin because he hated his fingers getting cold. He folded himself onto the other half of Caius' bed, facing him, and looked up with a grin he couldn't contain any longer. "I have a new favorite toy, and his name is Dorian Pavus. You know him, surely. His room is next to mine. All gorgeous black hair and sinful smiles? Almost as fashionable as we are?"
Caius searched through his mental catalogue of the school's students. "Dark skin, dreamy chocolate eyes?" he asked. "I haven't had the pleasure, but I have a vague impression of who you mean."
Every possible way to describe Dorian was absolutely edible. Thinking of this, Felix licked his ice cream off his spoon in a languid manner that was not exactly like his usual prim self. He sighed in confirmation. "Yes, him. His skin is like..." He spooned up another melty mouthful, half-focused on the conversation. "Vocabulary fails me. He even smells delicious."
This was one of those moments where actions spoke much louder than words. Caius set his untouched ice cream aside and leaned closer to his friend. "Felix," he said. "Have you...tasted Dorian?"
Felix smiled a small, sly smile. "Not like that. Not yet. We spent some of Saturday morning wrapped up in my bed, though." He paused, just to allow that tidbit to sink in, before adding, "Everything below the waist remained properly clothed."
Caius' green eyes widened. "Tell me," he said. "I want to hear everything."
Oh, good, because Felix was fairly bursting with the need to tell everything. He made himself comfortable and leaned over his lap to begin the confession. "Well, I took him on a little dream vacation to see a friend of his, and in the morning he came by with coffee. Benton was already out, thank goodness, so we got very comfortable on my bed. We were talking for a bit... he's actually quite brilliant, you know, and he doesn't get that glazed-over look when I start talking." Felix liked that, especially. He liked being appreciated for his intelligence.
"But he was just... so... warm. I got distracted. Mostly by his lips. Before I knew it, he was kissing me, and..." Felix smiled dreamily. "I think I lost a little time just running my fingers through his hair."
Caius had never seen this side of Felix before. Even when he had been dating Remus he hadn't been so enthralled. Caius would have to find a way to thank Dorian, though not directly.
"You mentioned being properly clothed below the waist," Caius reminded. "Does that mean that above the waist you were not so proper?"
"Not at all proper," Felix confirmed, and couldn't hide the small, satisfied smile. "I wanted to touch him, like... really, truly wanted to. It was a bit shocking, in fact. I didn't really think I was ever going to feel that way, but then, all of a sudden, he took his shirt off and I was extremely interested." Many times over the last few years, Felix had wondered if this side of himself even existed, if he would ever be comfortable enough with someone for any kind of intimacy. Somehow, Dorian had awakened everything Felix had been suppressing for years.
Caius hadn't felt like that for anyone yet. He'd conned Harry into a date and Sirius into a kiss, but the feelings Felix was referring to were still foreign to him. For a moment he might have felt jealous, but he smiled for his friend and said, "I'm so happy for you Felix. I do hope you're planning to do that again? It sounds like a waste not to."
"I certainly am." Felix gathered up another spoonful of ice cream, but only tasted it briefly. When he looked up again, his expression was more pensive. "I don't know if he wants to. I'm, um... well. Dorian is beautiful all over, but I'm... not." A certain set to his mouth conveyed that was all Felix was going to say about that. "He might decide he'd rather have someone with a less sordid past."
Caius stared at his friend in shock. He considered echoing a classic movie and slapping him, but he decided against being that dramatic. "Felix Harrowgate, I am appalled that you would say such a thing. After all you've done to put your past behind you," he said, gesturing animatedly with the spoon he'd forgotten he still had in hand. "Dorian obviously appreciated you well enough to enjoy being indecent above the waist. Whatever would make you think that he would change his mind?"
Felix did not like being scolded, even when it was in his best interest. Luckily, he was very much sweetened by ice cream, thoughts of Dorian, and his intense affection for his best friend. He only frowned briefly at Caius. "You didn't see his face when he... realized. He wanted to feel sorry for me, and that was the last thing I wanted. Nobody wants to feel pity for someone they're in the process of undressing. That is not enticing."
Caius pursed his lips. "No, I wouldn't think so," he admitted, "but I assume any pity was only fleeting. Otherwise you would not have been so excited when knocking on my door." Suddenly remembering the ice cream, he picked up his pint and took a spoonful. Delicious cherry flavor filled his mouth as he waited Felix's reply.
That could be true, Felix considered. His smile grew thoughtful and distant as he remembered everything that had come after that one uncomfortable moment. "He was... very enthusiastic. And very... warm. Did I already mention that? He was so warm all over." Felix sighed a contented sigh, then confessed more quietly, "I'm glad that I can enjoy these things."
Caius tilted his head thoughtfully, the spoon paused in his mouth. He pulled it out and swallowed. "You didn't think you would?" he asked.
For a brief moment, Felix looked like he used to, like he wanted to retreat and run from the question. But Caius was right. He had worked so hard to put his past behind him, to no longer be afraid. Though he said them quietly, the words came out without hurting him this time. "I never really did, before. They didn't exactly care. I thought I might have been broken, or maybe they killed whatever is in people that lets you enjoy other people touching you. I didn't know. I really didn't."
Caius listened. He knew to take in all of the things Felix said, especially at times like these, in order to retain the title of best friend. "Are you relieved?" he asked. He was curious to hear Felix's answer.
That was a good question, and Felix pondered it for another bite of ice cream. "Yes," he decided. "I think I am. I don't like thinking that they would have that kind of power over me for the rest of my life. They're in jail, and I'm free, and I don't want to let them keep deciding things for me years and years later. I want to make my own decisions about what I do with my... self."
Caius nodded once, satisfied, and took another bite of his ice cream. "So what is our goal?" he asked. "Is Dorian a boy toy or boyfriend potential?"
"Strictly fun, for now," Felix was quick to say. "I like Dorian immensely, but there's something... " He shook his head. "He holds himself separate. I don't know a better way to explain it. I know he wants me to like him, and he likes me, but he doesn't want me close, and he doesn't want me to want to be close." Really, Dorian and Felix were quite alike in that regard.
Dorian was sounding more and more interesting. Caius would have to make his acquaintance, and soon. "Boy toy it is then," he said. He raised his spoon in a toast. "Here's to beautiful men."
Felix took a heaping spoonful of his own treat, and bumped it lightly against Caius' with a soft giggle. "We deserve no less than the best."
