Toby and Victor chat after a meeting

Post meeting, Victor was in no hurry to move. He still had half a cup of coffee to finish (he wasn't sure he liked it but was trying to see why everyone else in the world seemed to love the stuff) and was munching on one of the brownies he'd baked for the group.

He liked hanging around afterwards anyway, besides the obvious factor of avoiding homework it was just sort of nice to have this time out around the non-human-passing mutants.

Toby, for her part, was refilling her coffee cup before leaving the meeting, the free coffee and brownies being her main incentives for attendance. Honestly, she wasn't that self-conscious over not exactly blending in, but she could understand why some of the others were.

Besides, she had to admit - an opportunity to ogle Kurt Wagner wasn't something she really wanted to miss.

"Hey, good brownies," she said, quirking a grin over at Victor as she put the cap back on her mug. Because yeaaah. The kids was awesome with the baked goods. Someone should point it out, before he stopped bringing them.

Victor grinned back at her "Hey, thanks, Toby right?" He pushed the plate towards her to invite her to take more.

"Toby." Not one to turn down free food, Toby helped herself to another brownie. "And you're Victor?"

"That's me," He gave a small nod as an affirmative as he smiled warmly. "Perks of being green, easy to figure out who I am."

"Hey, you're talking to the elf girl." Toby grinned. "Most people don't forget my name either, unless they figure it'll be funny if they call me Arwen instead."

Nodding, Victor told her "Oh yeah, I know all.about that. Baby Godzilla here."

Toby's eyebrows rose and she fought a grin. "You look nothing like Godzilla. I've seen all the Godzilla movies. Even Son of Godzilla was huge."

Victor chuckled "I'll pass that onto Damon if I see him."

"Damon, the guy who owns the bar?" Toby took a sip of her coffee and eyed him curiously.

He nodded and pulled a face "He's the one who came up with it. Not one of my favourite people to be honest."

"Haven't really talked to him." Toby grinned crookedly. "I just go for the pool table, to be honest. But if you don't like him, why quote him?"

"Do you like the people who've called you 'Arwen'?" He pointed out "It was just an example."

"Mmm, point." Toby shrugged, her grin tilting a bit. "Though one of those was...yeah. Someone I knew pretty well." Which was, admittedly, something of an understatement, given that Devin had stuck her with the nickname in the first place. Still, he wasn't exactly on her favorite person list these days.

"Sounds complicated." Vic nodded sympathetically though didn't push, instead he asked "How long since you manifested?"

"Huh. Four years now, I think?" Toby thought about it, then shrugged. "Something like that. You?"

"Three. Four in February, time flies right?"

"Yeah, no shit." She eyed Victor curiously, trying to decide whether or not to ask, then decided she might as well. After all, that was what this club was all about, right? Other than the free food. "All at once? Or little by little?"

"All at once. My 13th birthday I went to bed and then woke up looking like this. It was a bit of a shock, you might say." He smirked a little and shrugged. "I hated it a long time but I guess I own it now. It's me, you know? Had to accept it."

"Yeah, not much else to do." Toby grimaced. "Pretty much the same for me, other than the sleeping bit. Hit it midday. Went and looked in a mirror, and - bam." She smiled a little. "Not as drastic, maybe, but still. Definitely a what the fuck moment."

"I don't think it matters how drastic, we're teenagers so our bodies suddenly changing and we don't know why? Pretty much ultimate nightmare for everyone, right?" He shook his head a little "Could you covers yours with like, hair down and contacts or did people know?"

"The ears cover pretty easy." Toby reached up, removed the elastic band she was using to hold her hair back, and pulled her hair down to illustrate. "Have to remember not to push it back, but no big. Never bothered with contacts." She grinned a little. "I'm from San Francisco. I just told people who asked that I was wearing some, gave them the address of a shop that didn't exist that supposedly sold them OTC."

"Nice, not too sure if even San Francisco would rationalise me away." Victor chuckled and shrugged a little. "Unusual eyes and your mutation is blood related right? Lucky you weren't pegged as a vampire by an overly zealous Buffy fan."

"Well, gotta admit, I wasn't exactly advertising the blood bit." Toby shrugged crookedly. "There didn't seem to be much point. I mean, a couple of people knew? But they pretty much kept it to themselves." Right up until someone had decided to notify whoever the soldier guys were, anyway. "But you'd be surprised what San Francisco can rationalize. There'd be someone, at least, who'd figure it was some crazy new tattooing technique and want to know where you got it done."

"A guy's already done that. Tattoos and those dermal implant thingies to change his face." Victor told her, shaking his head as he laughed. "Runs a freak show, I so don't get why he'd put himself through pain to look lizardy."

"People do weird-ass things." Toby shrugged and offered a crooked grin. "Probably better to come by it naturally, though."

"Less painful anyway, well I don't think it hurt. I slept through it so it can't have been too bad." He frowned a little, trying to think back.

"Fuck. Hell of a way to wake up in the morning. I'd have been wondering what someone put in my coffee." Toby let out an amused snort. "Actually, I was pretty much trying to figure that out anyway."

"Helluva way to mark becoming a teenager." Victor agreed, helping himself to a brownie "And mutants weren't out then so I had no clue if I was dreaming, gone crazy or, or I dunno. Stumbled into a bad horror movie."

He left a pause before adding "my parents hide me in my from for. Half the year, maybe more."

"Nice." Toby's grin faded and she rolled her eyes. One more good reason for having done what she had; she wasn't sure what her mother would have done, but she wouldn't have put much past her. "I just took off. Far as I know, my mom doesn't even know."

"Not anything? How old were you?"

"Thirteen." Toby shrugged. "It all worked out okay."

Victor nodded a little, "I was scared and then just angry for a long time did some stupid things. Did you deal?"

"I - yeah. Stupid shit. Lots of it." She took a sip of her coffee, then shrugged. "Whatever, right? You deal, and you do what you need to do to keep going. That's life."

"Yeah, yeah that's it. Just keep on going," he'd made peace with it all but it had taken him a long time, and the poor student body had had to put up with him. "And now we have a support group. Funny how life works out."

"Yeah well, someone here probably needs it, even if we don't." Like Nick, but she wasn't about to point fingers. Toby grinned a little. "Gotta admit, I come for the snacks. And the view." She jerked her head in the general direction of their blue, fuzzy TA as explanation.

Victor snorted a little "It's not bad, yeah." It was Kurt and Kurt was, well, Kurt but he could still see what she meant. "I like the idea we might help the ones that need it." He automatically thought of Nick too. "And a good test group for new bakes, of course."

"Well, you're welcome to call me whenever anything needs taste testing." Toby made a face. "In the meantime, though, I should probably get back to my homework."

"Rather you than me, I'll stay and wilfully ignore my own mounting homework." He joked with a grin.

"I wish that was an option." Toby sighed, then crooked a grin and waved as she headed towards the door. "See you next meeting."
