Illyana and Nico celebrate Valentine's Day in Rome. Because...why not?
Illyana was grinning.
Well, she would have been, anyway, had she not been doing one last touch up to her mascara. Thanks to Kitty, she actually had an awesome idea as to what to do for Valentine's - something date-like enough to count as a date, but not so date-like as to be weird, given the situation. Moreover, thanks to the wonder of timezones, she might actually be back in time to see Kitty in her new dress.
Setting down the mascara brush, Illyana did grin. Now, all she had to do was hope that Nico wouldn't stick in his heels for some stupid reason and refuse to go. If he did, she might have to drag him anyway.
Nico knocked on Yana's door, figuring he was close enough to the time she had told him. He tugged on his collar, not sure why he had to dress up for this. Or even where they were going.
"Come on in," Illyana called out as she picked up her purse and moved over to the middle of the room.
"You gonna tell me where we're going yet?" Nico asked, walking in cautiously. You never knew with Yana quite where you were gonna end up.
"Nope." Illyana grinned, then looked him up and down appreciatively. "Wow. When I said dress up, I figured you'd wear a button down shirt instead of a t-shirt. Very nice."
Nico looked down at himself too. He guessed this was one of the perks of having a roommate like Caius. "Well...t-shirt's still there, but with a jacket?"
"You look amazing," Illyana assured him, and came over to take his arm. As she called up a stepping disk, she glanced over at him curiously. "How's your Italian?"
"Little kid level, why?" Nico asked right before they disappeared. When he blinked, they were in... "No freaking way."
Illyana held on tight to Nico's arm until the momentary disorientation passed, then loosened her grip and turned towards him with a hopeful smile. "My turn for a surprise. Not bad?"
"This is awesome," Nico agreed with a grin. The last time he had been in Italy, his mamma could carry him on her hip and his hand had to be held.
Grinning back, Illyana let go of his arm entirely and fished in her purse. "Plus tickets." She handed them to him proudly, grateful that she'd been able to print them off back at school from the museum's website, which had a handy English translation. "Apparently, they're having some big exhibit on cross-culture death cults?
"Really?" Nico asked with interested, peering at the tickets and trying to decipher the words. "How much do I owe you?"
"Dinner." Relieved that the tickets were apparently okay, Illyana smiled. "You can buy dinner - I mean, I've got Euros, so I'll get it, but you can pay me back later. Fair?"
"Okay," Nico agreed, giving Yana a crooked grin. This was so cool. And she had planned it all, for him. "You're really one upping me on the dates here."
"Yeah, well, Kitty helped." Illyana shrugged, her face warming a little, but she smiled. "But it was tough to beat the sword fighting class."
"I think taking me to Rome tops it," Nico chuckled, eyes bouncing around all of the sights. It was pretty awesome.
"I really should've done it sooner." Illyana smile tilted and she shrugged. "But on the other hand? If I had, you'd have had to have dealt with me half passed out, so maybe this is better anyway."
"Yeah I think I prefer this way," Nico agreed, giving her a crooked grin. He knew the feeling of powers draining your energy.
Wasn't very fun. "So what first?"
Illyana pulled out her phone, checked the time, and grinned. "We've got plenty of time. Want to play tourist?"
"After you bella," Nico told her, flashing her a genuine smile. His fake girlfriend rocked.

Rome was, Illyana decided, just as cool as Pietro'd said it was. They'd seen it - well, bits and pieces of it, anyway. And the museum had been cool, once they'd figured out that there were self-guided recorded tours available in English. In fact, it had been a pretty awesome day.
The food wasn't at all bad, either.
"So, do you think we can get extra credit in World Cultures if we hand in the pictures we took?" Illyana asked Nico as she wound linguini around her fork. "Because hey, serious bonus."
"Couldn't hurt, might help," Nico agreed with a grin, gathering his own forkful of pasta. This place was just as great as he remembered it.
Well, minus the whole family thing.
"Anything might help. I mean, I love that class, and not just because Dick's the TA," though she had to admit, that didn't exactly hurt, and having him there to daydream about made it a lot easier to ignore Sharon and Vance. But sharing that with Nico would lead straight to awkwardness, "But the tests are just evil."
"All tests are evil," Nico reminded Yana, shaking his head. He was pretty sure he was failing more than one of his classes right now.
"True." Illyana nibbled at her linguini. "But some are more evil than others." So, okay. Maybe it wasn't exactly a normal Valentine's Day conversation, let alone a normal date. But whatever. It was them.
Illyana was grinning.
