Scott and Cal
Cal goes to ask Scott about joining LXQ.
Cal had been looking for Scott, and while it would have been easy to just focus on him and teleport to his location, that was something he reserved for actual emergencies. The potential invasion of privacy, and risk of witnessing something he really didn't want to, were pretty big deterrents the rest of the time.
But he figured the War Room was a good place to go knocking, since his room and the Danger Room had been a bust.
Scott turned in his chair, and called out, "Come in."
"Hey," Cal greeted him as he opened the door and stepped into the doorway. "You got a minute?"
The older man nodded, and then turned just enough to wipe his screen of whatever he'd been looking at. "Come on in." Scott turned back to face Cal again, and gestured for him to take a seat.
"Thanks." Cal closed the door and came to sit in the offered chair, showing no sign of unease or nervousness. "So I'm turning eighteen in November, and I was wondering if you'd take me on LXQ." Although JVX totally had the better name.
"I think it's going to go by X-Men, until someone suggests something that wasn't made up by Jean-Paul as a joke," Scott said, shaking his head at the name. "So, why do you want to join?"
Well, that was slightly better. Cal pursed his lips, as if trying to come up with a better answer, but then went for the simple truth. "I like helping out. Yeah, it sounds simple, but - I guess it is."
"Occam's razor in action." Scott looked at Cal, as though sizing him up. Physically fit, relatively average sized. He had good control of his mutation. His performance with JVX was good. Decent team player. He hadn't run enough sims with his team and the Mimic to know with precision how he would fit in, but had the potential to be quite an asset. Finally, he said, "Come to our practice tomorrow morning, and we'll see what you can do."
Cal nodded. "What time where?" He was guessing Danger Room, but who knew.
"Six, in the Danger Room," Scott said. "Make sure you're suited up."
"Sure thing," Cal agreed, and pushed up to his feet. "Thanks." Hey, it was a shot, which was all he'd been asking for. He wasn't too worried, though. JVX had prepared him well.
Scott smirked, just slightly. "Don't thank me 'til afterwards. I'm told that I'm evil."
"Hey, you're no longer scrambling for your extra glasses when we're in the same room, I'm taking that as encouragement," Cal told him with a smirk.
The older man shrugged. "I've watched your training. I've learned some things about my mutation. In combination, I'd wager you can control yourself well enough."
Cal stopped from heading for the door, leaning his hands on the back of the chair he'd been sitting on. "What'd you learn about your mutation?" Hey, it could end up being pertinent information. Cal had never been shy of asking people about their mutations; probably because of his, he figured.
"When other people borrow it, they can turn it off." He didn't explain why.
"Who's borrowed it?" Cal asked with a frown. His first guess was Toby, but he couldn't imagine Scott volunteering his blood.
"Ms. Daye." It wasn't like there were many mimics around. Besides, he didn't think Toby intended it to be kept secret.
"She vamped on you," Cal smiled. It wasn't said with anything close to distaste or mockery. "I kinda wanna hear the story behind that. But I'm mostly impressed she managed to get it under control straight away." She'd mentioned she didn't get the user's manual the way Cal did - not that he could have gotten one with Scott, anyway.
Scott nodded. "Something like that. But yeah. Minimal damage, and she got it under control nearly immediately."
"Did you guys figure out how precise she could be, without a visor?" Cal asked. Hey, he had to ask. Being able to use Scott's mutation could prove seriously useful.
"She hit the same tree twice. I assume on purpose," Scott said, voice somewhat dry.
"We should totally give it a go some day," Cal stated with a smirk. "Outside, though, yeah." Just in case.
Scott nodded. They needed to know, if Calvin was going to join the X-Men, whether he could borrow and control Cyclops' power. But that was definitely an outdoor type of practice. "And far away from anyone else," he added.
"That too," Cal agreed. He straightened up. "And in the meantime, I'll see you tomorrow evening. Oh, and I'm sticking by it for now, evil or not -" he'd been heading for the door, and he paused after opening it, giving Scott a half-smile, "thanks."
