Cal finally ends up having some fun with this singing bullshit, thanks to Purple Lu.
"What are you doing?"
Purple Lu looked over at Neutral and grinned. "What does it look like I'm doing?"
"It looks like you're going somewhere." Neutral rolled over onto her side, eyebrows rising. "Dick?"
"Maaaybe?" She straightened her dress and slipped a silver bracelet onto her left wrist. "I haven't decided yet."
"Are you sure this is a good idea? I mean, it's been a really weird day with all the singing and everything," Orange pointed out nervously from where she was sitting at her desk, reading.
"It'll be fine. I just want to get out for a while." She patted Orange on the head absently as she grabbed a clutch purse and headed for the door. "Don't wait up!"
Orange and Neutral turned to look at each other. They were going to regret this later. It was inevitable.
* * *
Cal walked into the kitchen typing a text to Angie, in reply to one of hers asking what he was up to. Not singing if I have a fucking say about it. Not punching the daylights out of Quire. Grabbing stuff from the kitchen. And getting plastered. That was his grand plan for the night. No more fucking singing no matter that Betsy couldn't help, no staff-on-student violence, a few snacks, and a lot of alcohol.
Dick wasn't in his room, which was a bummer but not really a big deal, and Lu made her way downstairs, peeking into some of the common areas to find a likely candidate. She finally scored at the kitchen, and smiled playfully at Cal as she leaned against the doorframe. Cal! Perfect! Sis' instruction to not flirt with her bandmate didn't even apply - she wasn't flirting, just looking for someone to go out with. Mostly. She opened her mouth to ask him, and instead found herself singing.
"What's the time? Well it's gotta be close to midnight. My body's talking to me, it says, Time for danger."
Grinning, she entered the room, throwing her arms out to the sides for emphasis, "It says, I wanna commit a crime, wanna be the cause of a fight. I wanna put on a tight skirt," she ran one hand down over her hip in illustration and grinned teasingly, "and flirt with a stranger."
Christ, just perfect, Cal thought the moment he heard someone begin to sing - and he thought he knew that voice. He looked up after hitting send and, yep, Lu. Purple Lu, too, which he could guess before he even looked at her eyes. That dress. And every curve it fit. Man..
And the song she was singing was perfect Purple, too, if you asked him.
'Stranger?' he mouthed at her, torn between exasperation and amusement. If that meant she wanted to flirt with somebody not him, he was fine with that plan.
He dropped in a chair, sprawling back in it to watch her. Hey, if she was going to put on a show...
Lu laughed and shrugged a little at Cal's silent question. Whatever. There were more important things at stake here!
"I've had a knack from way back, at breaking the rules once I learn the games. Get up! Life's too quick, I know someplace sick, where we can go dance in the flames." She grinned a challenge as she came over to tug at his hands, pulling him to his feet.
"We don't need any money," she promised. "I always get in for free. You can get in too if you get in with me."
Cal let her pull him up, actually tempted by what she was offering. He'd meant to stay in and get drunk, but going out and getting drunk would be a much better distraction from the shitstorm that had been this day. He wouldn't do a thing, because Angie, but there was no harm in going out for a few drinks.
"Let's go ouuuut tonight," he joined in with her, decision made, a slight smirk on his lips and her hands still in his.
"I have to go ouuuut tonight," she added, and he joined in again, just on the last two words. "You wanna play?"
"Let's run away," he agreed, and then they both went on to sing, "We won't be back until it's New Year's Day!"
Yes! "Take me out tonight!" Lu grinned, wrinkled her nose, and mimed as if scratching at his chest. "Meow."
Perfect! She'd been right, this was just what she'd needed. She tugged at Cal's hand up over her head and spun, then peered up at him playfully over her shoulder. "When I get a wink from the doorman, do you know how lucky you'll be? That you're on line with the feline of Avenue B?"
Cal laughed at her little scratch and meow; okay, this was way better than Disney Channel musicals, or whatever it was he'd been stuck singing with Yana.
"Let's go ouuuut tonight," they sung in unison again, and he spun her again, the other way this time, to uncurl their arms.
Lu laughed as well, spinning, and sang, "I have to go," and Cal chimed in for, "out tonight."
"You wanna prowl, be my night owl?" she teased. "Well take my hand we're gonna howl."
Cal joined in for another refrain of, "Out tonight," and Lu grinned, then let go of his hands. Hands in the air in mock frustration (and at least some honesty, thinking of her mom's old apartment), she continued with, "In the evening I've got to roam - can't sleep in the city of neon and chrome. Feels too damn much like home, when the neighbors' babies cry."
"So let's find a bar," Cal chimed in, "so dark we forget who we are..." There was surprising intensity in his voice, but then again, this was exactly the kind of evening he had in mind. "Where all the scars from the nevers and maybes," he held his hand out to her in offer, "die..."
Angie had gotten Cal's text and grimaced. Even though she had avoided getting caught up, much, in the singing, she knew it had to be annoying. And even if it meant a possibility of getting caught in some duet with him, Angie thought that hanging out with Cal might be better than just staying in her room and singing at Mogwai.
She headed down to the kitchen, hoping to catch Cal before he headed back up to his room. And paused when she rounded the corner and caught sight of Cal. And...Lu. Dancing. And singing. And...
Well, nothing bad. But Angie still had the feeling that she'd walked in on something that she didn't really want to see.
Mmmm. And yes, that was one of the reasons she'd always liked Cal. Girlfriend or no (and yeah, okay, respecting that, blah blah blah she'd heard the spiel from the other two) he knew how to have fun. Lu grinned as she took his hand and moved in a little closer, with a trace of mischief in her eyes that would make it obvious that she was playing around, not serious. "I have to go..." then let him spin her again as he joined in for, "out tonight."
Laughing, she spun back in, reaching up to tease her fingers down his arm, and met his eyes with barely contained laughter. "You're sweet - wanna hit the street?"
"Wanna wail at the moon like a cat in heat?" Cal followed up with a hand on her waist.
"Just take me," she went on, and he joined in for, "ouuut tonight!"
Maybe it wasn't what it looked like, but it looked bad. Angie clutched at the door frame for a moment before she forced herself to take a step back. She let her powers take over, covering herself in armor before turning and running.
It was one of those things she'd discovered a while ago that she didn't tend to tell people, but it came in handy at the moment. When she was armored up, she couldn't cry.
"Please take me-" Cal joined in for "ouuut tonight," and she threw her hand up to her forehead dramatically, tossing her head. "Don't forsake me!" She grinned at him sidelong before chiming back in with, "Ouuut tonight!"
"I'll let you make me," they went on in unison, and Cal loped an arm around her waist as they pretty much sang-shouted the rest of the song at each other, "ouuuut tonight! Tonight! Tonight! Tonight!"
Cal chuckled with a shake of his head as the compulsion to sing finally went away, and grinned at Lu before dropping his arm from her waist. "And finally, this singing thing isn't so bad."
"Oooouch, you too, huh?" Still trying not to laugh, Lu stooped down and picked up the purse she'd dropped when she started singing. "Seriously, I'm so over it. Are you teleport-capable tonight, or should I go get keys?" She grinned a challenge. "My dad shipped my bike here. I get my New York license next week..."
"Nah, I can take us out," Cal told her with a smirk, and grabbed his phone. "Let me just text Angie, then we can figure out where exactly I'm taking us."
"What are you doing?"
Purple Lu looked over at Neutral and grinned. "What does it look like I'm doing?"
"It looks like you're going somewhere." Neutral rolled over onto her side, eyebrows rising. "Dick?"
