While out for a smoke, Effy runs across a boy that, thankfully, keeps his thoughts completely out of her head. Teon continues to make himself helpful to psychics with shield issues.
Today was a good day. Not too hot, not too cool. It was the kind of day that meant he would stay outside for most of it. He'd shucked his shirt, keeping his shorts on if only because the headmasters had said he couldn't stay if he wandered around the school grounds in anything less than that. This was a good place, and Teon didn't want to leave it, willingly or otherwise.
The sun was warm, the grass smelled great, and the scent of the lake was just the perfect accent, sprawled as he was near one of the small footpaths that went around the school grounds. In fact, it would've been hard to notice Teon if it weren't for the fact that he had his head propped up just slightly on a small, smooth stone, and his head rocking back in forth with time to his own humming of a Ukrainian folk song he remembered from back home.
Effy needed a fag. She'd only been back in the states for a few weeks now and, though she didn't miss her mum or dad, she did miss her easy supply of things. Now she was stuck with tobacco until she met up with Harry or someone soon. She took a few drags before she noticed she wasn't alone in her corner of the grounds. Huh, interesting.
Teon caught the smell of cigarette smoke well before he had caught the scent of someone new, which made him tilt his head up and look at the direction that the smell was coming from. He grinned in her direction before sitting up completely and waving to her. He briefly glanced around for his missing shirt, trying to remember if he'd left it here, but then decided that he probably hadn't. He'd find it later, easily. It smelled like him, after all. New people were worth going to see, so he got up in his typical ape-walk position and started to amble over to her.
Curiouser and curiouser. She couldn't really hear him, perhaps due to his animal like nature. But he was grinning at her, so Effy gave a smirk back.
He plopped himself a few feet away from her, smiling. "Hello," he said, his Ukrainian accent still fairly heavy; the four months he'd been in the states wasn't quite long enough for him to lose it. Especially considering how little talking he did. This new person smelled pretty good, despite the cigarette smoke. "I'm Teon." She may have heard about him; he'd heard people talking about how he'd just shown up at the school.
"Effy," she responded, tilting her head curiously. "Which Slavic country?" His accent was pretty distinctive.
A brief look of surprise crossed his expression before he grinned. "Ukraine." And then, with less of a smile. "Donetsk." The city's name had been all across the news when the conflicts with separatists broke out. It wasn't exactly a world secret that the place had been a war zone of a sort. "Where you from?" he asked, tilting his head and smiling.
"Bristol. England." She was still getting a feel for this guy. He was...different. And different was always interesting in Effy's book.
He nodded. Kind of like Megan, then, from what he was remembering. He fiddled with some blades of grass in front of him, searching for one he could do a little trick with that his father had taught him before he'd been enlightened. "What you do?" he asked, figuring that was the best next conversation piece. As far as conversations went in Teon's activities.
"Normally I hear people's thoughts..." Effy trailed off, observing him. "But you seem to be a bit different on that front."
He nodded at that, grinned, and poked the side of his head. "Enlightened," he said, nodding. Traditional interpretations of that word aside, his claim likely seemed dubious at best.
Effy quirked a brow at that. Enlightened. Right. "And you..." She eyed him up and down. She would have to guess it was fairly self explanatory.
"Strong!" he said, as if his visibly muscled arms and chest were not obvious enough evidence of that. "Smell good, hear good. Fast." He shrugged. That was nothing really special about it, to him.
Effy smiled at that with appreciation. He was direct. It was...refreshing. "Enjoying the day then mate?"
He nodded, grinning just a little. "Warm," he said, now thoroughly distracted from finding a suitable blade of grass. "Good sunshine. Lake smells nice."
"It is rather warm isn't it?" God, Effy was so out of practice of actually having to converse without knowing the other side of the conversation to start. Then, remembering her cig, she waved it slightly and asked, "Is this bothering you?"
When he'd first arrived at the school, Teon would have said yes, but enough time around the people at the school who smoked made him realize the air was still so much cleaner here than anywhere else. He shook his head. He was curious, though, about the nature of her abilities. He tapped the side of his head. "What it like? Hearing thoughts," he clarified.
Effy gave it a moments ponder before responding in a far away voice, "It's like a hurricane, in your head. Or a stampede. And then...boom. You get lost."
Teon made a face. That didn't sound good. "Not good," he murmured, nodding. It was good that she came out here to center herself from time to time. At least, that's what he figured she was doing. "Need borders," he added. Though she probably knew that already.
"Working on it...unfortunately not as easy as it sounds," Effy responded with a shrug.
Just from what Teon knew about construction, fences were easier to put up where the ground was, well, easier to dig into. It was hard to stick a fence post in a mind. "Tough," Teon estimated, nodding. It sounded difficult, the way she described it. He made a gesture that indicated smoking, mirroring the way she smoked her cigarette. "That help?" he asked.
"Some...not as much as others," she replied with a smirk, settling down onto the ground and leaning back on her elbows.
The response caused Teon to tilt his head a little bit, though upon seeing her settle down like that, he ape-walked over next to her and settled down on his elbows, mirroring her posture, but still respectful of personal space, though closer than a total stranger might have done. "Others?" he asked, finally getting around to asking his question.
"Drugs," Effy replied easily, watching his face.
Teon nodded, looking thoughtful. "Haven't tried," he confessed. He wasn't opposed to them; far be it from him to tell people to not enjoy themselves and be at peace.
Effy shrugged. "They get the job done." Sometimes, she added. "What do you like to do?"
"Enjoy sun, warm breeze," Teon listed. "Swim. Run. Climb. Eat."
"Sounds simple," Effy told him, but not unkindly. It sounded rather...wonderful. For him, at least.
He nodded. "Simple is best," he agreed.
"So all this academia is not really your taste?" Effy asked, waving to the mansion behind them. After all, technically this was still college and A levels would have to be taken accordingly.
Teon shook his head. "Boring," he said, shrugging. He just didn't see the need for any of it.
"Now that is something I can agree with," she told him, giving him a small grin before taking another drag. The sun did feel rather nice. Effy closed her eyes, trying to appreciate the momentary silence.
He returned the grin, and closed his eyes as well, taking a deep breath once her cigarette smoke had dispersed, appreciating the silence as well. Sometimes it was enough just to be.
