Tony and Philip, Shinobi's Party
Tony checks in with the Agent lurking in a corner, and as usual sarcasm abounds.
He hadn't meant to get distracted, really, had only gone over to fetch another drink and a non-alcoholic one at that. But then Tony had spotted Coulson lurking in a corner the way he always did, and there was no way to pass that up. Especially since he hadn't seen the guy since their not-quite-argument. Far be it from Tony to actually admit he was checking up on him but...well.
"You know," he said as he ambled over, making no attempt to be sneaky. There was no point anyway. "I feel obliged to tell you that you can't actually pretend you're not here."
"I am not pretending I'm not here," Philip pointed out. "I'm keeping an eye on things, that's completely different."
"And yet oddly I am fairly sure Shinobi didn't invite you here to play security," Tony said a little too innocently, and made a show of sipping at his drink.
"Actually, no he didn't. But it never hurts to keep an eye on things," Philip said with a shrug. "At least this time, I seemed to be avoiding the water so that's something."
"So far," Tony agreed with a too-large smile. "But shouldn't you be hanging out with your girlfriend or something? I thought I saw her wandering around here somewhere."
"I will, eventually. Not all our friends are in common and we're still not exactly public. It's also a little awkward now that I'm staff," Philip said. It didn't make that much of a difference, really, but it could still feel pretty strange. "Where's Steve?" he asked with his own most-bland smile.
"Around somewhere," Tony said without so much as a blink. Coulson knowing was something he'd just taken for granted. "He's pretty big, he can't be that hard to spot."
"I could ask you the same thing then, about why you're not over there," Philip said with a trace of a smile.
Tony's eyes went huge and liquidy. "A man can't come over to say hi to a friend?"
"You know that didn't work when you were ten," Philip said dryly.
"Not on you, maybe," Tony said easily, letting the expression slide off in an instatnt. "It's true, anyway. I just came over to see why you were lurking in a corner."
"Business as usual, mostly." Philip paused then, it wasn't exactly the normal course of things but she did ask. "My mom said to say hello, by the way."
Tony blinked once before his expression turned slightly apprehensive. "...why?"
Philip just gave him a wry look. "Do you really think she told me that? There's not much you can squeeze into about five minutes. But she does like you, remember. And she knows everything," he added with a grimace.
"Well of course she does," Tony said, completely on autopilot. "And...of course she does." There were probably other things he could say there, especially about the 'five minutes' thing, but he was probably the last person Coulson would want to hear it from.
"It wouldn't surprise me if she had her eye on SI," Philip said, just to wind him up. "When she's in the States anyway."
Tony gave him a mildly offended look in return. "She can't have my company," he said with an injured sniff, exaggerated for amusement's sake. "I don't care how awesome she is."
"I'm pretty sure she doesn't want it. That's not the kind of eye I mean." Because really, the idea of his mother being nailed down in one place forever? Philip remembered the stories, he was still astonished that she'd managed to make it through his infancy without losing her mind.
"Well thank god for that," Tony drawled, then fixed him with an almost incongruously sharp look. "Feeling better, then?"
"Than what? The last time I was at your building? That stopped being an issue that morning," Philip said with a shrug. "In general, no. The world is getting complicated and I'm not in a position to do much about it yet."
"I meant, since talking to your mom," Tony said, though he filed the rest of that away. Philip admitting defeat on something was definitely a thing to make note of. "I thought I was supposed to be the cynic here."
"Well, it's good to know that she's okay, even if she's neck deep in something I don't want to know about." Philip paused then, not sure what he should be saying if anything. Tony was definitely not on the list to meet his grandparents.
Tony waved that away with a dismissive gesture. If Coulson didn't want to know, Tony definitely didn't want to hear about it. "Whatever. We can just ignore the fact that I actually asked after your wellbeing, that's fine. But I wanted it noted that I made small talk and everything."
"I'll find you a gold star later," Philip said dryly. "It'll come from a sticker sheet and everything. But in all seriousness, I am fine. I had Simon check on me. No lasting damage."
As if physical damage was what Tony worried about. But if Coulson wanted to play all deflect-y then fine. Tony would just remember that the next time he came poking about things. "It better be a really nice star. Really nice, Coulson. None of this cheap stuff."
To his credit, (maybe), Philip really had no idea what Tony was asking him. "Twenty-four carat, I'm sure I can find them."
Tony just made a faintly amused sound. "I'm sure. You gonna be back to the building, or staying at the school?"
"I'm not sure yet. Shaw had some space open, it'll depend on what state people are in." And what Noriko wanted to do, though Philip wasn't going to mention that part.
"Uh huh. Just remember you're on Shaw's home turf," Tony said with a grin, as if Coulson was likely to forget. A reminder or two couldn't hurt. "If you wake up with ninja gear drawn on you, I told you so."
Philip just raised an eyebrow. "Do you honestly think anyone could catch me asleep?"
"I wanted it noted on my gold star record," Tony said instantly, sing-song, "just how many dirty jokes I am holding back right now. So many, Coulson."
"Only you, Stark," Philip said with a shake of his head. "Would turn preparedness into something sketchy."
"I am awesome," he agreed brightly. "You need anything?"
"No, not now," Philip said with a shake of his head. "I'll be wrestling with a few things over the next couple months but I'll see what comes of those."
Tony gave him a dry look in return. "Delighted to hear it. Not that you're not fascinating, but I'm gonna go find my boyfriend now."
"Say hello to Steve for me," Philip said serenely. "I should find a chance to talk to him more one of these days."
"Absolutely not," Tony said without a blink as he turned to go. "I just got him to like me, you and your blackmail material can stay away."
"Have fun at the party, Tony," Philip said as he went off to go check on more things.
