Felix and Caius (and Fix) - Felix's Birthday, Middle of the Party
Needing a break from his birthday festivities, Felix seeks out Caius to get a little air. Caius, prepared for just such a moment, takes Felix away from the party to his room and presents him with another birthday gift, the company of their furry friend Fix.
Felix didn't think it was quite right that he had used Caius as an excuse to slip away from Jean-Paul and then not actually go to his friend afterward. The conversation with the older boy had been tense for a moment or two, but both of them had left it smiling. Jean-Paul had even laughed before they had taken leave of each other, which was a sight to behold indeed.
Though he was feeling confident about that conversation, and about rekindling a friendship with one of the first people to be truly kind to him after he'd escaped his old life, it was all a bit exhausting and befuddling. Felix escaped to Caius' side, still bright-eyed and smiling, but more than a little out-of-breath. "Do you think we could get some air, just for a minute?"
"Why of course!" said Caius, slipping an arm through his friend's and leading him toward a less crowded part of the room. "I have just the thing." He turned them toward the room's exit.
It was so common now for Caius to take his arm like this that Felix thought little of it any longer. He gave his friend a grateful smile. "Have I mentioned yet how absolutely incredible this all is?" Felix laughed, still rather giddy. "This has got to be the most amazing birthday party anyone has ever had."
"Far be it for me to turn down appreciation," said Caius with a smile. "I am very happy you are enjoying it. The headmasters did turn down a few of our more grandiose ideas but I do think it turned out well."
Felix knew he could never thank Caius or Shinobi enough... and he might never understand why they had done so much for him. He would hate to seem ungrateful, even for a moment. "I've never seen anything so magnificent. Not even at the Club. I just need a minute or two? Then we can go back and dance and have that drink we discussed."
He turned his best, sweetest smile on for Caius, though he really didn't think his friend would mind, since it meant that he had all of Felix's attention for that minute or two.
"Of course," said Caius. "In fact I had planned for just a moment like this, my dear. Care to take a short stroll to my room?"
"You're just full of surprises, aren't you?" Felix teased warmly. "Please lead on."
"I hope that doesn't begin to make me predictable," said Caius as he continued down the hallway in the direction of his room, "but this was too good an idea to resist."
Felix had already relaxed significantly with a little open air to breathe, enough to brighten with interest at what was behind Caius' dorm room door. "I promise I can never predict you."
Caius grinned and led on. When they reached his dorm room he turned to his friend. "Would you mind waiting one moment? Surprises are all about presentation and I would hate for this one to be sub par."
Giggling, Felix stopped outside the door and waited, hands clasped before him excitedly. "I completely understand! Since you're sweet enough to plan surprises for me, the least I can do is allow you to present them properly."
"Wonderful! I'll be back in but a moment." With that Caius opened the door and slid inside his room, closing it behind him.
He moved to his bed and slid the cage he had hidden beneath it out. Felix would have hated to see it but necessity required it. It was but a moment before his guest's attention was caught and he could coax the little one out. He made sure to smooth silky fur and < href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1-mnEzd9J9A/UAO_O4Ox9iI/AAAAAAAAAAQ/pUCruH-EqpQ/s150/Fox%2Bin%2Ba%2Btophat%2Bresized.jpg">dress him smartly in a top hat and tiny bow tie before setting the animal on his bed where it waited patiently. Once the cage was hidden once more he rose and returned to the door.
"Please, come in," he said as he opened it.
Felix hadn't the slightest idea what Caius was up to, but the first surprise of the evening had been quite loud and rather startling, so Felix approached this one more cautiously. He eased the door open a little bit further and peeked inside, first, giving the room a quick overall glance. Right away, of course, he saw it. Who could miss a red fox in formal attire?
He didn't know whether to gasp or laugh, and he ended up sort of doing both, as he stepped inside and took a careful step toward Fix. "What... how... he's so handsome!" Felix laughed, though as he usually did in the woods, he kept his voice to a low whisper.
The fox stood proudly in the middle of the bed, top hat perched jauntily on his head.
"He didn't want to miss your birthday," said Caius.
At that, Felix pressed a hand to his mouth, one of his typical gestures when he was unsure of what to say, or was afraid something untoward might get blurted out. Fix didn't seem to be afraid or wary at all, so Felix inched his way even closer, his other hand fluttering uncertainly. He lifted his hand just enough to ask softly, "Are you... ? I mean, is he really real? Could I pet him?"
Caius' illusions could be extremely realistic, even to the touch. Felix couldn't be sure if Fix was an illusion, or if the fox was under Caius' spell itself.
"He is very real," said Caius. "As long as I can keep his attention I don't see why not."
Felix nodded, then moved close enough to sit on the edge of the bed, and reach out a careful hand to pat the fox's back lightly. Fix barely seemed to notice he was there, so Caius must have him entranced by a very enthralling illusion. The fox's fur was coarse and thick for the winter, but with a fluffy kind of softness that made Felix smile immediately. He stroked the animal's back and the back of his neck, not wanting to dislodge his formal attire. "I didn't know you could use your power on animals too."
"I've been practicing," said Caius. "An animal mind is different than a person's but it seems to be just as malleable."
"People have no idea how impressionable their minds are," Felix murmured in agreement, ever so content just to look and pet Fix's fiery winter coat. Why he was so very drawn to the fox, he had no idea, but it had captured his imagination.
"I never thought I'd get to touch him," sighed Felix, finally glancing up at Caius. "Thank you. So much."
Caius' smile was genuine though not as energetic as when he had revealed the party. He was finding it slightly harder to concentrate on keeping the illusion for the animal than he would have for a human or mutant but he was enjoying the practice.
"You are very welcome my dear," he said. "I take it you are feeling a little less overwhelmed now that we've escaped for a while?"
Felix gave the fox a gentle, almost affectionate rub under the chin. He'd probably never get another chance to do this, not without Caius' intervention, but he also knew it wasn't entirely right to keep a free animal away from his home. "I am," he agreed, taking a deep breath and sighing rather contentedly. "I'll be all right if we go back ... will Fix be okay?"
"We could send him home before we head back," suggested Caius.
That was perfect. Felix smiled immediately. "Yes, let's do. We might not be good hosts otherwise, and I do so appreciate his presence."
"Would you mind carrying him?" Caius wasn't going to bring out the cage in front of Felix and the sensation of being carried could be transformed into a lovely dream for the fox.
Felix didn't even bother to respond. The smile that bloomed even brighter on his lips was answer enough. He reached out and lifted Fix up very carefully, with a soft 'oof' of surprise. Somehow, he hadn't expected the animal to be heavy, but it didn't bother him. The privilege of carrying their furry friend back home was quite enough. "We should probably undress him first," Felix added, turning so that Caius could do so.
Caius gently removed the bow tie and hat and placed them on his desk to put away later. He soothed the fox with sensations and visions of the outdoors and peaceful warm sunshine. Each attempt on the fox's mind was a challenge as the animal could not be counted on to react like a human or mutant but the fox seemed to accept the illusion and relaxed in Felix's arms. Caius then opened the door so they could exit and closed it behind him.
"Well bring him back to the area we usually find him in," he spoke quietly. "That is where I caught him."
Stepping back out, Felix was careful to keep Fix well supported and his little black feet warm, patting the creature's back with a gentle warmth never before seen from him. "You're being so good," he praised softly, whether or not Caius could hear him. "There's a good fellow. We'll take you back home."
Glancing up, he smiled at Caius, barely containing his bubbling pleasure. Of all the gifts he had received for this very surprising birthday, this moment was by far his favorite.
Caius was so proud! His whole plan for the day had gone off without a hitch. He was getting much better at producing those rare smiled of Felix's. He hoped he wouldn't one day get bored of them.
He smiled back at his friend and, though he chanced being redundant, said, "happy birthday Felix."
Felix didn't think it was quite right that he had used Caius as an excuse to slip away from Jean-Paul and then not actually go to his friend afterward.
